After BSF, Agniveers to Get 10% reservation in CISF Jobs

  • The Union Home Ministry announced 10 per cent reservation for former Agniveers in vacancies in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), a week after taking a similar initiative for jobs for them in the BSF.
  • The ministry also notified relaxation in the upper age limit depending on whether they are part of the first batch or subsequent batches of Agniveers.
  • The announcement was made through a notification after amending the rules made under the Central Industrial Security Force Act, 1968, (50 of 1968).
  • The upper age limit shall be relaxable up to five years for candidates of the first batch of former Agniveers and up to three years for candidates of other batches.
  • Ex-Agniveers will also be exempted from physical efficiency test.

Naval Forces from China, Russia, Iran Conduct Joint Drills in Gulf of Oman

  • Naval forces from China, Iran and Russia all countries at varying degrees of odds with the United States staged joint drills in the Gulf of Oman.
  • Other countries also took part in the Security Bond-2023 exercise.
  • These exercises helped deepen practical cooperation between the participating countries' navies.
  • The exercises came amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and China over a range of issues, including China's refusal to criticise Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine and continuing support for the Russian economy.

Coast Guard Holds Drill with 5 Nations

  • The Indian Coast Guard conducted a three-day (March 14-16) exercise with five nations under the aegis of the Colombo Security Conclave at Kolkata.
  • Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Mauritius, along with observer countries, Bangladesh and Seychelles, participated in the drill.
  • The Colombo Security Conclave was formed in 2011. It aims to make maritime security, marine pollution response and maritime search and rescue priorities for the region.

India Joins Sea Dragon Exercise 2023

  • The Indian Navy deployed a P8I aircraft to Guam, USA, to participate in the third edition of 'Exercise Sea Dragon 23', a coordinated multi-lateral Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise for Long Range MR ASW aircraft organized by the US Navy. The exercise, scheduled from March 15 to 30, 2023, will focus on coordinated ASW tactics among the participating countries and will involve advanced ASW drills.
  • Exercise Sea Dragon is a biennial, multi-national naval exercise focused on Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) training, tactics, and procedures. The exercise has been held since 2015 and is organized by the US Navy. The exercise involves the participation of naval forces from multiple countries in the Indo-Pacific region, including India, Japan, Canada, and the Republic of Korea. The aim of the exercise is to enhance the collective ASW capabilities of the participating navies, while also promoting mutual trust and cooperation between friendly nations. The scope and complexity of the exercise have increased over the years, reflecting the growing importance of ASW in the Indo-Pacific region.

Defence Start-up Hyper Stealth Technologies Bags First Order under iDEX

  • The Indian Army took a lead in awarding the first ever procurement order of an Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) project as per the revised procedure. The contract for procurement of an indigenously developed 'Integrated Mobile Camouflage System (IMCS)' for Mechanised Forces was signed with Indian start-up Hyper Stealth Technologies Pvt Ltd, in presence of the Lt Gen JB Chaudhari, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff (CD&S) and Anurag Bajpai, Joint Secretary, DDP in Sena Bhawan.
  • iDEX was launched by Narendra Modi during Def Expo India 2018. The aim of iDEX was to create an eco-system to foster innovation and encourage technological development in Defence and Aerospace by engaging R&D Institutes, Academia, Industries including MSMEs, Start-Ups, Individual Innovators and provide them grants/ funding and other support to carry out R&D which has good potential for future adoption by Indian Defence and Aerospace Organisation.
  • iDEX is funded and managed by Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) under MoD (DDP). Over past four years, iDEX under DIO has been able to emerge as a front-runner in establishing the right kind of contact with the start-ups and Innovators and has gained substantial traction in the Defence start-up Community.

DRDO Conducts 2 Successful Flight Tests of VSHORADS Missiles

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted two consecutive successful flight tests of Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • The flight tests were carried out from a ground-based man-portable launcher against high-speed unmanned aerial targets, mimicking approaching and receding aircraft. The targets were successfully intercepted, meeting all mission objectives.
  • VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) meant for neutralising low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges. It has been designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian Industry Partners.
