Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of Two Women as Gauhati HC Judges

  • The Supreme Court collegium recommended the appointment of Shamima Jahan, an advocate, and Yarenjungla Longkumer, a judicial officer, as judges of the Gauhati High Court.
  • The collegium comprising Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B. R. Gavai passed a resolution which revealed that the names were suggested on the strength of the High Court Collegium's May 2023 recommendations that underwent meticulous scrutiny and evaluation last October 2023.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of One Judicial Officer as Calcutta HC Judge

  • The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the name of Smt. Chaitali Chatterjee (Das), Judicial Officer, for appointment as Judge of the High Court at Calcutta.
  • The Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice B. R. Gavai approved the recommendation made by the High Court collegium in September 2023.
  • The Collegium noted that the Chief Minister and the Governor for the State of West Bengal had not conveyed their views on the above recommendation. The Department of Justice forwarded the above recommendation by invoking para 14 of the Memorandum of Procedure which provides that if the comments of the constitutional authorities in the State are not received within the prescribed time-frame, it should be presumed by the Minister of Law and Justice that the Governor and the Chief Minister have nothing to add to the proposal and proceed accordingly.
  • The Collegium consulted three judges of the Supreme Court who were conversant with the affairs of the Calcutta High Court. All the three consultee Judges have unanimously and emphatically opined that the candidate is suitable for being appointed as a High Court Judge.

Kerala High Court Launches Bilingual E-newsletter 'High Court Chronicles'

  • In a fresh initiative by the Kerala High Court, a bilingual e-newsletter, 'High Court Chronicles', was released by Chief Justice Ashish J. Desai.
  • The monthly newsletter will be available in both Malayalam and English aimed at updating the legal community and the general public on important legal initiatives, events and High Court judgments.
  • Justices V. G. Arun and C. S. Dias served as the editorial board members for the inaugural edition of the e-newsletter.
  • The monthly newsletter also has details on the activities of the Kerala Legal Services Authority (KELSA), the High Court's mediation centre, as well as the activities of the Kerala State Mediation and Conciliation Centre.

Allahabad High Court Launches Automatic District Allocation System for Newly Recruited Civil Judges

  • For the first time, the Allahabad High Court posted 225 newly-recruited civil judges (junior division) to various districts of the state through software without any human intervention.
  • A press release issued by the Registrar (Protocol) of the High Court informed that all the postings were done by the 'Automatic District Allocation System', a software developed in-house to eliminate human intervention in the allocation of stations of posting.
  • The single-click generation of the allocation list was successfully done in the presence of Acting Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta while sitting in consultation with the senior judge of the High Court, Justice Anjani Kumar Mishra, who also chairs the computerization committee of the High Court.

Justice B. R. Gavai Nominated as Chairperson of Supreme Court Legal Services Committee

  • Supreme Court judge, Justice B. R. Gavai was nominated as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.
  • A notification intimating the development was issued by the Central Department of Justice.
  • The Legal Services authorities are tasked with providing legal aid and assistance to the weak and marginalised sections of society.
  • The post was earlier held by the Supreme Court's Justice Sanjiv Khanna. Justice Khanna was appointed Executive Chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

Senior Advocate A. Sudarshan Reddy Appointed Advocate General of Telangana

  • The Governor of the State of Telangana appointed Senior Advocate A. Sudarshan Reddy as the Advocate General of the State.
  • Sudarshan Reddy had previously also held the post in 2011 and continued to hold it till 2014 during Kiran Kumar Reddy's tenure as the Chief Minister. He also served as the AG for AP and Telangana during the President's Rule in 2014, during the demarcation of the State.

Govt. Allows Appointment of Advocates with 10 Years of Experience in Indirect Tax Matters to Appe...

  • The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the Central Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Act, 2023.
  • Section 110 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 was modified by the CGST (Second Amendment) Act. A sub clause permitting the appointment of advocates with ten years of experience in indirect tax disputes to the Appellate Tribunal is one of the revisions.
  • A clause is introduced stating that only those under fifty years old are eligible to hold the roles of President or Member. In addition, changes are made to the retirement age that permits re-appointment for some positions up to the age of seventy, subject to certain age restrictions.
