Gamaka Exponent H.R. Keshava Murthy Passes Away

  • Gamaka exponent and Padma Shri awardee H. R. Keshava Murthy passed away at his residence in Shivamogga district of Karnataka. He was 89.
  • Murthy was born in a Gamaka artists' family and got his training from his father.
  • Over the decades he has presented hundreds of programmes and trained many students. Through his performances, he publicised noted Kannada epics. Hosahalli, his native place, is known for many music talents.
  • Keshava Murthy has been honored with many awards inlcuding Shantala Natya Shri award, by the State government and different cultural organisations.
  • Gamaka, also known as kaavya vaachana, is a form of storytelling by singing that originated in Karnataka, India. One person reads a stanza of a poem with highest emphasis on meaning, applying suitable raga or a dhaati (melodic line), usually matching the emotion of the poem; the song generally has no established rhythm.
  • Another person then explains the meaning of the stanza with examples and anecdotes. Gamaka draws ragas from Kannada folk music, Yakshagana and Carnatic music. The singing itself is called gamaka and the singer a gamaki. The explanation of the rendering is called vyakyana. The emphasis in kaavya vaachana is on literature (Saahithya) and not on music where singer splits, compounds words in poems to make them easier to understand.

Sonakshi Sinha Named as PETA India's 2022 'Person of the Year' Title

  • Bollywood actress, Sonakshi Sinha was awarded PETA India's 2022 Person of the Year title. Sonakshi's actions helped save the lives of many animals killed for fashion, but her strong advocacy for dog and cat rights earned her the title. She is actively involved in animal welfare activities and regularly voices out the need for stronger animal protection laws. The international animal rights non-profit group endorsed the title and celebrated the actions of the "Dabang" actress for saving animal lives in India.
  • Last year, Alia Bhatt was awarded the same title. Previously PETA India Person of the Year winners include former Supreme Court Justice K.S. Panicker Radhakrishnan, cricketer Virat Kohli, comedian Kapil Sharma; and actors John Abraham, Anushka Sharma, Sunny Leone, R. Madhavan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Hema Malini, and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, among others.
  • PETA stands for People for Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA was founded in 1980 and is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. PETA is the largest animal rights organization in the world, and PETA entities have more than 9 million members and supporters globally.

Puma Names Anushka Sharma Brand Ambassador

  • Puma India appointed Bollywood actoress Anushka Sharma as its new brand ambassador in a move that forms part of its ongoing commitment to support women's business in India.
  • As per the company, bold, fierce and outspoken Anushka is the perfect fit to be the face of Puma.
  • She will endorse the brand's footwear, apparel and accessories, including select collections, through myriad activities and brand campaigns throughout the year.
  • Puma India has a total of 30-35 brand ambassadors in India which include Sharma's husband and cricketer Virat Kohli. Other brand ambassadors associated with Puma India include Kareena Kapoor Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Mary Kom, Sunil Chhetri and Harrdy Sandhu.

Hawaii's Last Princess, Abigail Kawānanakoa Passes Away

  • Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawānanakoa, Hawaii's so-called "last princess", passed away aged 96.
  • The royal, known to her friends as Kekau, was one of the last living links to the royal family and was celebrated for her philanthropic support of traditional Hawaiian culture.
  • Abigail Kawānanakoa was born in Honolulu in 1926 and later attended school in Shanghai and California.
  • Her great wealth, which is estimated to be $215m (£175m) and was held in trust, came from her great-grandfather, James Campbell, an Irish businessman who owned a sugar plantation.

Cherisha Chanda from India Wins Miss Eco Teen Pageant

  • Indian teenager Cherisha Chanda, who is 17 years old, made history by winning India's first Miss Eco Teen Pageant. Beela Vu, Miss Eco Teen 2021 from Vietnam, gave her the crown.
  • The world's largest beauty contest, Miss Eco Teen, has its headquarters in Egypt. There were 25 participating nations in the competition. Cherisha Chanda, Miss Teen Diva 2021's runner-up, was chosen to represent India in the Miss Eco Teen Pageant. The international pageant promotes environmental awareness and partners with the current champion in a number of environmental initiatives. The recipient is also given the opportunity to participate actively in UNEP.
  • Chanda has been actively involved with ACT Now, a non-governmental organisation that actively promotes environmental initiatives in more than 160 nations.
