Former JD(U) President Sharad Yadav Passes Away

  • Former JD(U) president and ex-convener of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance Sharad Yadav passed away. He was 75.
  • Yadav became a Lok Sabha member first from Jabalpur (MP), then Madhepura (Bihar) and later Badaun (UP). He was a seven-term Lok Sabha MP and a four-term Rajya Sabha MP, having served in public life for nearly 50 years after getting elected to the fifth Lok Sabha for the first time in 1974 from Jabalpur.
  • He was arrested under the controversial Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency.
  • In 1997, Yadav became the Janata Dal chief. The veteran later headed the JD(U), formed in 2003 with the merger of Samata Party and the Janata Dal faction headed by him. Between 2003 and 2016, Yadav remained the JD(U) chief.

Constantine II, Last King of Greece Dies

  • Greece's last King Constantine II died aged 82.
  • Constantine II ascended to the throne in 1964 during a turbulent period in Greek history that culminated in a military coup three years later.
  • He was soon forced to flee abroad following an unsuccessful counter-coup. The monarchy was abolished in 1973.
  • Constantine II was later stripped of his Greek citizenship.

Padma Awardee Dr. Tehemton E. Udwadia "Father of Laparoscopic Surgery" Passes Away

  • Padma Awardee Dr. Tehemton Erach Udwadia, an Indian surgeon and gastroenterologist, who was known as the 'father of laparoscopic surgery in India' passed away, at the age of 88. He was born on 15th July 1934 in the Bombay Presidency, British India (now Mumbai, Maharashtra, India).
  • Tehemton E Udwadia pursued medicine and started his career as a research fellow at the King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College in 1958 and stayed till 1962.
  • In 1993, he found the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons and he served as its President from 1993 to 1998.
  • He was the 1st surgeon in India to introduce laparoscopy in surgery in 1972, and the 1st to perform laparoscopic surgery in the developing world in 1990.
  • He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian award, in 2017.

Rehman Rahi, Kashmir's First Jnanpith Awardee Passes Away

  • Noted academic, poet, and Kashmir's first Jnanpith awardee, Professor Rehman Rahi, passed away at his Srinagar residence. He was 98.
  • Prof. Rahi was an acclaimed poet who also translated the works of many renowned poets and writers into the Kashmiri language. In 2007, he was awarded the country's highest literary award, the Jnanpith, for his work "Siyah Rood-e-Jaerenn Manz" (In the black downpours). Among other awards, the globally acclaimed poet also received Padma Shri in 2000.

Former Bengal and Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi Dies

  • Former Governor of West Bengal and three-time Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Keshari Nath Tripathi died at his residence in Prayagraj. He was 88.
  • Apart from West Bengal, Tripathi had held additional charge as the Governor of Bihar, Meghalaya and Mizoram.
  • Born on November 10, 1934 in erstwhile Allahabad, Tripathi was also a senior advocate at the Allahabad High Court. He joined RSS when he was just 12.
  • Tripathi was elected MLA for the first time in 1977 from Jhunsi assembly constituency in Prayagraj district. He went on to win six more Assembly elections and his last victory was in 2002 from Allahabad South seat. He contested the 2007 and 2012 Assembly polls too but faced defeat both the times.
  • In a career spanning decades, Tripathi was elected as the Speaker of the UP Assembly under different chief ministers including Kalyan Singh, Rajnath Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Gianluca Vialli,Former Italy and Chelsea Striker Passes Away

  • Gianluca Vialli, the former Italy and Chelsea striker, died aged 58. Gianluca Vialli was an Italian football player and manager who played as a striker. Vialli started his club career at Cremonese in 1980 in his native Italy where he made 105 league appearances scoring 23 goals. His performances impressed Sampdoria who signed him in 1984, and with whom he scored 85 league goals, won three Italian cups, Serie A and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
  • Vialli finished his playing career at the end of the 1998-99 season to focus on management and Chelsea would win the FA Cup and Charity Shield in 2000 under the Italian, before he was sacked early in the 2000-01 season.

Last Surviving Apollo 7 Astronaut Walter Cunningham Passes Away

  • US astronaut Walter Cunningham, the last surviving member of the first NASA mission to ever broadcast live TV from orbit, died at the age of 90.
  • Apollo 7 was an 11-day manned mission in 1968 that tested the ability to dock and rendezvous in space. But the crew also won an Emmy for their broadcast.
  • It paved the way for the moon landing by Apollo 11 less than a year later.
  • Cunningham was born in Creston, Iowa, and went on to earn a masters degree in physics from the University of California in Los Angeles. While working as a civilian at the time, he was one of three astronauts chosen for the first manned spaceflight in the Apollo programme.
  • As lunar module pilot for Apollo 7, he was accompanied by Navy Captain Walter Schirra and Air Force Major Donn Eisele.
