Justice Sheel Nagu New Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court

The Central government notified the appointment of Madhya Pradesh High Court judge Justice Sheel Nagu as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The development came more than six months after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Nagu's appointment as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice Nagu was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court after Chief Justice Ravi Malimath demitted the office on May 24, 2024.

Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi New Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court

Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
His name was recommended by the Supreme Court collegium in December 2023.
Justice Sarangi enrolled as a lawyer in 1985 and practiced before the Orissa High Court as well as the Supreme Court. He was appointed as a judge of the Orissa High Court in June 2013.
The Jharkhand High Court is one of the newest high courts in India. It was established in 2000. The court has jurisdiction over Jharkhand state. The seat of the court is at Ranchi, the administrative capital of the state. The court has a sanctioned judge strength of 25.

Three New Criminal Laws Come into Force

The three New Criminal Laws – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, come into force today. The government of India has held regular meetings with States and Union Territories and they are fully geared up in terms of technology, capacity building and awareness generation to implement the new Criminal Laws.
These Bills were passed by the Parliament during the winter session last year (December 2023).
As the new Criminal Laws laid emphasis on technology in investigation, trial and court proceedings, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has made 23 functional modifications in the existing Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (CCTNS) application. It is also providing technical assistance to the States and UTs for seamless transition to the new system.
To implement the new Criminal Laws, training of the Police and investigating authorities have been done for a smooth transition into the system. Public Awareness flyers, interaction programs, informational websites, and ministerial-level webinars have also been held. Additionally, Mandatory inclusion of course modules in schools and higher education institutes are also one of the steps taken.

Jammu and Kashmir High Court Grants Recognition to Kashmir Advocates Association

The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh granted recognition to the Kashmir Advocates' Association (KAA), while exercising the powers vested with it under Section 58 of the Advocates Act, 1961
The decision was taken after the Full Court made a recommendation to recognise the KAA under the Advocates' Welfare Fund Act, 2001.
Advocate Waseem Gul is the President of KAA, while Advocate Mubashir Majid Malik is its Vice President. Jeetender Singh is the KAA's General Secretary and Adil Muneer Andrabi is its Joint Secretary.

Three New Criminal Laws much Needed but Their Names Should be in English: Former CJI P. Sathasivam

Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and former Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam urged the Central government to retain the English names for the three new criminal laws - the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
The new laws are set to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act and will come into effect on July 1, 2024.
The former CJI sent an official communication to the Union government, the Law Minister and the Law Secretary asking them to retain the existing English nomenclatures of the criminal laws in the country, considering that Article 348 of the Indian Constitution too mandate that all proceedings in the Supreme Court and in every High Court shall be in English.
