World Refugee Day

The day was earlier recognized as Africa Refugee Day and later in December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared it as an International Day for Refugees. World Refugee Day is an important day to reflect on the plight of refugees worldwide and to renew the commitment to finding lasting solutions to this pressing issue.
  • The theme of World Refugee Day 2024 is 'For a World Where Refugees Are Welcomed.'

World Sauntering Day

  • World Sauntering Day is observed all over the world on June 19 every year.
  • In 1979, W. T. Rabe established World Sauntering Day. He was the one who started this holiday in the 1970s. This day was created in response to jogging's growing popularity. W.T. Rabe, it appears, has also devised a few sauntering norms. This act must be performed in comfortable clothing, and "some people are just born with it," according to W.T. Rabe. The purpose of commemorating this day is to encourage people to take a break, enjoy life, and appreciate what they have.

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

  • World Sickle Cell Day is observed on June 19. The day aims to raise awareness about the fatal illness. It also focuses on the challenges faced by those who suffer from it.
  • The United Nations General Assembly declared World Sickle Cell Day in 2008 to promote awareness of sickle cell illness. As a result, on June 19, 2009, World Sickle Cell Day was commemorated for the first time.
  • The World Sickle Cell Awareness Day 2024 theme is 'Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally'.

  • On June 18 countries around the world observe the International Day for Countering Hate Speech. This important day aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of hate speech and promote strategies to identify, address, and counter it.
  • In July 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech," highlighting global concerns over the "exponential spread and proliferation of hate speech.
  • This year's (2024) theme, 'The Power of Youth for Countering and Addressing Hate Speech', highlights the crucial role that young people play in fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society. The United Nations recognizes that hate speech, which targets and dehumanizes individuals based on their identity, is on the rise worldwide, spreading rapidly through social media platforms.

Autistic Pride Day

  • Autistic Pride Day is observed annually on June 18, and this year.
  • Autistic Pride Day was first celebrated in 2005 by Aspies For Freedom (AFF), who chose June 18 to honour the birthday of the group's youngest member at that time. AFF modelled the celebration after the gay pride movement.
  • The theme for Autistic Pride Day 2024 is 'Taking the Mask Off'.

  • Its origin can be traced back to the early 20th century in the US and the credit for recognising the day goes to Sonora Smart Dodd, who hailed from Spokane in Washington. After getting inspired by Mother's Day, the lady came up with the idea of honouring her father- William Jackson Smart, a Civil War Veteran- who single-handedly raised 6 of his children after his mother's demise.

  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is celebrated on June 15 every year.
  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was established by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations with an aim to raise awareness about the issue of elder abuse and neglect, as well as to promoting understanding and respect for older people.
  • The theme of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2024 is 'Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies.'

Global Wind Day

  • Global Wind Day is observed on June 15 every year to raises awareness about the importance of wind energy and its power to alter the globe. It is an effort to promote the use of wind energy as a sustainable and renewable source of energy.
  • The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) hosted the first Wind Day in 2007, ushering in this historic event. However, in 2009, the EWEA collaborated with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) to develop Wind Day into a global celebration, broadening its reach and effect around the world.
