Gao Yaojie, Renowed AIDS Activist Dies At 95

Gao Yaojie, a trailblasing Chinese doctor and activist, passed away at the age of 95 in the United States. She was known for her fearless exposure of the AIDS virus epidemic in rural China during the 1990s.
Gao rose to prominence as China's most prominent AIDS activist, exposing blood-selling schemes that infected thousands with HIV. Her unwavering commitment to addressing the crisis earned her international recognition and forced the Chinese government to confront the AIDS epidemic well into the 2000s.

Indian-American Medical Student from Michigan is Miss India USA 2023

Rijul Maini, a medical student from Michigan, was crowned Miss India USA 2023 at the annual pageant held in New Jersey.
During the event, Sneha Nambiar from Massachusetts was declared as Mrs India USA and Saloni Rammohan from Pennsylvania won the title of Miss Teen India USA.
The pageant is the longest running Indian pageant outside of India. It was started by New York-based Indian-Americans Dharmatma and Neelam Saran, in 1990, under the banner of Worldwide Pageants.

Veteran Kannada Actress Leelavathi Passes Away

Veteran actress Leelavati passed away at the age of 85.
Leelavati had acted in theatre and movies. Leelavathi worked in over 600 movies, including Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.
In a career spanning more than six decades, the actress has starred in more than 600, films, out of which 400 were in Kannada. She began her career as a member of Mahalinga Bhagavathar's Sri Sahitya Samrajya Drama Company troupe. She made her acting debut in the 1958 mythological drama 'Bhakta Prahlada'. However, she shot to prominence as a leading lady with the 1960 historical drama 'Rani Honnamma'. Some of her notable works include, Bhakta Kumbara', 'Santha Thukaram', 'Bhatka Prahlada', 'Mangalya Yoga', 'Mana Mechchida Madadi' etc.
She was two times the recipient of the National Award.

Renowned Economist and Dalit Thinker M. Kunjaman Passes Away

Renowned economist, academician and prominent Dalit thinker M. Kunjaman was found dead at his residence. He was 74.
He served as an economics faculty at the University of Kerala, member of the University Grants Commission and professor at the Tuljapur campus of Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS).
In 2021, his autobiography 'Ethiru' was selected as the best autobiography by the Kerala Sahitya Academy. But Kunjaman refused to accept the honour.

Sandra Day O'Connor, the First Woman on the U.S. Supreme Court Passes Away

Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism and the first woman to serve on the nation's highest court, died. She was 93.
O'Connor's nomination in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan and subsequent confirmation by the Senate ended 191 years of male exclusivity on the high court. A native of Arizona who grew up on her family's sprawling ranch, O'Connor wasted little time building a reputation as a hard worker who wielded considerable political clout on the nine-member court.

R. Subbalakshmi, Popular Malayalam Actress and Musician, Passes Away

Veteran actress R. Subbalakshmi, renowned for her remarkable contributions to Malayalam cinema, passed away at the age of 87. Her journey from being a trained Carnatic musician to gracing the sliver screen with her powerful performances has left an indelible mark on the hearts of film enthusiasts.
Subbalakshmi's journey in the entertainment industry began as a dedicated employee of All India Radio. Her passion for music and the arts led her to also serve as a music instructor at Jawahar Balbhavan, showcasing her multifaceted talents early in her career.
However, it was her foray into acting that brought Subbalakshmi into the limelight. Her breakthrough role in the film 'Kalyanaraman' catapulted her to fame, making her a household name. Over the course of her illustrious career, she graced the screens in approximately 75 films, leaving an enduring impact on Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema.
Subbalakshmi's contributions were not limited to acting; she also lent her voice to the industry. Her skills as a dubbing artist were recognized and she left her mark on various films. Additionally, she showcased her musical prowess by singing for films like 'Marykkundoru' and 'Ammini', further highlighting her diverse talents.
