Gao Yaojie, Renowed AIDS Activist Dies At 95

  • Gao Yaojie, a trailblasing Chinese doctor and activist, passed away at the age of 95 in the United States. She was known for her fearless exposure of the AIDS virus epidemic in rural China during the 1990s.
  • Gao rose to prominence as China's most prominent AIDS activist, exposing blood-selling schemes that infected thousands with HIV. Her unwavering commitment to addressing the crisis earned her international recognition and forced the Chinese government to confront the AIDS epidemic well into the 2000s.

Indian-American Medical Student from Michigan is Miss India USA 2023

  • Rijul Maini, a medical student from Michigan, was crowned Miss India USA 2023 at the annual pageant held in New Jersey.
  • During the event, Sneha Nambiar from Massachusetts was declared as Mrs India USA and Saloni Rammohan from Pennsylvania won the title of Miss Teen India USA.
  • The pageant is the longest running Indian pageant outside of India. It was started by New York-based Indian-Americans Dharmatma and Neelam Saran, in 1990, under the banner of Worldwide Pageants.

Veteran Kannada Actress Leelavathi Passes Away

  • Veteran actress Leelavati passed away at the age of 85.
  • Leelavati had acted in theatre and movies. Leelavathi worked in over 600 movies, including Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.
  • In a career spanning more than six decades, the actress has starred in more than 600, films, out of which 400 were in Kannada. She began her career as a member of Mahalinga Bhagavathar's Sri Sahitya Samrajya Drama Company troupe. She made her acting debut in the 1958 mythological drama 'Bhakta Prahlada'. However, she shot to prominence as a leading lady with the 1960 historical drama 'Rani Honnamma'. Some of her notable works include, Bhakta Kumbara', 'Santha Thukaram', 'Bhatka Prahlada', 'Mangalya Yoga', 'Mana Mechchida Madadi' etc.
  • She was two times the recipient of the National Award.

Renowned Economist and Dalit Thinker M. Kunjaman Passes Away

  • Renowned economist, academician and prominent Dalit thinker M. Kunjaman was found dead at his residence. He was 74.
  • He served as an economics faculty at the University of Kerala, member of the University Grants Commission and professor at the Tuljapur campus of Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS).
  • In 2021, his autobiography 'Ethiru' was selected as the best autobiography by the Kerala Sahitya Academy. But Kunjaman refused to accept the honour.
