IAF to Field Sukhoi for 17-Nation Drill

  • Fighter jets Sukhoi-30MKI and midair refueller IL-78 — both of Russian origin – along with US-made heavy-lift plane C-17 would be fielded by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in an upcoming 17-nation military exercise in Australia.
  • Called "Pitch Black 2022", the exercise will be conducted from August 19 to September 8. The three-week-long military drill, to be conducted in Northern Territory of Australia, will involve over 100 aircraft and 2,500 military personnel.
  • This year's participants include India, the US, Australia, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the UAE and the UK.

India, Bangladesh Agree to Reinforce Military Exercises

  • The fourth India-Bangladesh annual defence dialogue, co-chaired by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Lt Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman, Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division of Bangladesh, was held.
  • The two sides agreed upon widening the scope of military bilateral exercises and raising their complexity, a statement by the Ministry of Defence said. Both sides emphasised the need to work closely to implement the USD 500 million line of credit extended from India for defence items.
  • Various aspects of defence, industrial and capability-building cooperation came up for detailed discussions. Both sides reviewed the progress of various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and expressed commitment to elevate engagements between the armed forces. Kumar invited the delegation for the upcoming Def Expo 2022 and said both countries had a great potential for cooperation in defence trade, co-development and joint production.

India, US Joint Special Forces Exercise Begins in Himachal's Bakloh

  • The 13th edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise -- Ex Vajra Prahar 2022 began in Himachal Pradesh's Bakloh. The drill aims to improve inter-operability between the special forces of both the countries.
  • This joint annual exercise is hosted alternatively between India and the US to share the best practices and experiences in areas such as joint mission planning and operational tactics.
  • The US contingent is represented by personnel from the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) and Special Tactics Squadron (STS) of the US Special Forces while the Indian Army contingent is formed by drawing Special Forces personnel under the aegis of SFTS.

DFI, Indian Army Sign MoU to Accelerate Drone Technology

  • The Drone Federation of India (DFI) and the Army Design Bureau (ADB) signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate drone technology development and indigenisation in the drone ecosystem in the country at a time when the world is witnessing a swift transition from traditional warfare to a technology-driven one.
  • The need of the hour for the Indian defence machinery is to customise such UAVs to adapt to the high-altitude requirement of our forces.
  • This collaboration will help accelerate this process. We are also planning a visit of industry insiders at the forward areas to expose them to actual operating scenarios of soldiers.
  • The DFI and ADB have established a holistic collaboration on roadmap planning, research, testing, manufacturing and adoption of drone, counter drone and associated technologies that are to be utilised by the Indian Army in its operations.

12th Edition of Defence Expo to be Held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat

  • The Ministry of Defence announced that the 12th edition of the Defence Expo, India's flagship exhibition on Land, Naval and Homeland Security systems, will be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The event will be held between October 18 and 22, 2022. The theme for this edition is 'Path to Pride' invoking nationalistic pride and encouraging citizens to partake in nation-building through establishing a capable indigenous Defence industry.
  • The five-day event will witness three business days followed by two public days. Live demonstrations showcasing the equipment and skill set of the Armed Forces, DPSUs and Industry will be held on all five days at Sabarmati River Front through active participation and synchronized efforts at all levels.

India Begins Cooperation with Bahrain-based Combined Maritime Forces

  • India formally commenced cooperation with the Bahrain-based multilateral partnership, Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). However, the modalities of the exact nature of cooperation are being worked out.
  • At the India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in April 2021, India had announced that it would join the CMF as an Associate Partner, which Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had then said will strengthen cooperation in regional security in the Western Indian Ocean. Joining the CMF is the latest in a series of multilateral engagements by the Indian Navy as part of India's widening military diplomacy.
  • CMF is a multi-national naval partnership to promote security, stability and prosperity across approximately 3.2 million square miles of international waters, which encompass some of the world's most important shipping lanes.
  • The 34 nation grouping is commanded by a U.S. Navy Vice Admiral, who also serves as Commander U.S. Naval Forces CENTCOM and U.S. Fifth Fleet. All three commands are co-located at U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain. In the immediate neighbourhood, Pakistan is a full member of CMF.
