May 29 is observed as International Everest Day. This day is in the memory of two persons who climbed Mt. Everest in 1953. The persons are Nepalese Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand's Edmund Hillary. Mount Everest is located between Nepal and China. On this day in Nepal's capital Kathmandu, several events and processions take place to praise the mountaineers.
Nepal decided to observe the day as International Everest Day in 2008 when the legendary climber Hillary passed away.
Mount Everest attracts climbers, including highly experienced mountaineers, every year from across the globe. The British named it Mount Everest after Sir George Everest, a 19th-century British surveyor of South Asia.
International Day of UN Peacekeepers
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed annually on May 29. It is a day dedicated to honouring the contributions and sacrifices of United Nations (UN) peacekeepers in maintaining peace and security around the world. The day also serves as a tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers has its origins in the United Nations General Assembly. In 2002, the General Assembly designated May 29 as the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers to honour the memory of peacekeepers who lost their lives in the service of peace.
The choice of May 29 as the date for this observance was significant. It marks the anniversary of the creation of the first UN peacekeeping mission. On May 29, 1948, the UN Security Council authorised the establishment of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) to oversee the ceasefire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This mission became the first-ever peacekeeping operation conducted by the United Nations.
The theme for the International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2023 was 'Peace begins with me'. This year (2023) it marked the 75th anniversary of peacekeeping.
Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the US that is observed on the last Monday of the month of May (in 2023 May 29) every year. The occasion is aimed at honouring and mourning the loss of the US military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday through an act of Congress in 1971. Notably, Memorial Day in the US was observed on May 30 between 1868 to 1970.
Historically, Memorial Day can be traced back to the Civil War era in the US. However, it was declared a national holiday through an act of Congress in 1971. The occasion is meant to establish a way to set aside some time to honour the troops who had given their lives in service to America.
