Armed Forces Flag Day

  • Every year, December 7 is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day or Flag Day of India to honour the martyrs, veterans and serving personnel of the defence forces. The day has been observed annually since 1949 to remember the services of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and collect funds to ensure their and their family's well-being.
  • Soon after India achieved independence, a need arose to support and encourage the welfare of the defence personnel. On August 28, 1949, a committee was set up under the then Defence Minister of India, which decided to observe Flag Day annually on December 7.
  • In 1993, India's Defence Ministry combined all related welfare funds, including those for war victims and the Kendriya Sainik Board Fund, into one, named the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF).

International Civil Aviation Day

  • The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) marks International Civil Aviation Day every year on December 7.
  • International Civil Aviation Day was first observed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on December 7, 1994, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Convention. Later, the UN General Assembly announced December 7 to be International Civil Aviation Day in 1996.
  • ICAO selects a special anniversary theme for the global day every five years for the entire four-year interim period. The UN body has proposed the theme of International Civil Aviation Day in 2019 until 2023 as, 'Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development'.

Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2023: B. R. Ambedkar Death Anniversary

  • December 6 marks the Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2023, commemorating the death anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a towering figure in the Indian history. As the architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of social justice, his contributions have left an indelible mark on the nation.
  • Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and Independent India's first Law Minister, was a multifaceted leader known for his tireless efforts against untouchability. In 1947, he established the 'Drafting Committee' to present the final constitution draft. His leadership and commitment to social reform are encapsulated in his significant role in shaping India's constitutional framework.

National Microwave Oven Day

  • National Microwave Oven Day, observed annually on December 6th, celebrates the invention and widespread adoption of this convenient kitchen appliance. It is a day to recognise the microwave oven's impact on modern life and its contribution to making cooking and food preparation more efficient and enjoyable.
  • National Microwave Oven Day was established in 2005 to celebrate the invention and widespread adoption of the microwave oven. The date of December 6th was chosen to commemorate the day in 1945 when Raytheon filed a patent for the microwave oven.

International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development

  • International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development is observed on December 5 ever year. The day is also referred to as International Volunteer Day (IVD) to recognise and promote the tireless work, not just of UN Volunteers, but of volunteers across the globe.
  • The United Nations General Assembly sanctioned the observance of International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development on December 17, 1985. Designated to be observed annually on December 5h worldwide, this day has since been embraced by the UN system, governments, civil society organisations, and others, fostering the spirit of volunteerism globally.

World Soil Day

  • World Soil Day is celebrated annually on December 5.
  • World Soil Day 2023 (WSD) and its campaign aim to raise awareness of the importance and relationship between soil and water in achieving sustainable and resilient agri-food systems.
  • In June 2013, the FAO Conference endorsed World Soil Day and later approached the 68th United National General Assembly and requested for its official adoption. Towards the end of 2013, the UN General Assembly designated December 5, 2014, as the first official World Soil Day.
  • According to the United Nations (UN), the theme for World Soil Day 2023 is 'Soil and water, a source of life.'

Navy Day

  • Navy Day in India is celebrated on December 4 every year to recognise the achievements and role of the Indian Navy to the country.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Navy Day celebrations at at the historic Sindhudurg Fort in Maharashtra and also unveiled a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Rajkot Fort.
  • Admiral R. Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, hosted the event, featuring operational capabilities with 20 warships and 40 aircraft, including iconic models such as the LCA Navy, MiG 29K and MARCOS.
  • Navy Day, celebrated annually on December 4, commemorates Operation Trident, the audacious naval attack on Karachi harbour during the 1971 War.
  • This was the first time the navy organised such a mega event, which did not take place at any major naval station.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

  • Every year, International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on December 3.
  • In 1992, the annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was announced by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The day was celebrated with the aim of understanding disability issues and gaining support to ensure that their rights to well-being, dignity and equal opportunities are practiced.
  • The theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2023 is 'United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities'.
