Supreme Court to Organise Special Lok Adalat

  • The Supreme Court will organise a special Lok Adalat from July 29 to August 3 to facilitate amicable settlement of suitable pending cases.
  • The special Lok Adalat will be organised in the 75th year of the establishment of the apex court, which came into existence on January 26, 1950, with the coming into force of the Constitution.
  • The apex court said that Lok Adalats are an integral component of judicial system in the country, enhancing alternative dispute resolution as a means of expediting and fostering amicable settlements.

Karnataka Prohibition of Violence against Advocates Act Comes into Force

  • The Karnataka government notified the Karnataka Prohibition of Violence against Advocates Act, 2023 (KPVA Act) with effect from June 10.
  • The statement and objects of the law highlights that in doing their duty, advocates are vulnerable to malicious and frivolous prosecution by rival parties which interferes with the performance of their duties and the administration of justice itself.
  • The law was introduced in the State assembly by Karnataka's Law and Parliamentary affairs minister H. K. Patil on December 11, 2023. It was then passed by the Karnataka Legislative assembly on December 12, 2023.
  • The law received the assent of the Governor on March 20, 2024.

Centre Notifies Appointment of Two Additional Judges of Gauhati High Court as Permanent Judges

  • The Central government cleared the appointment of two additional judges of the Gauhati High Court as permanent judges.
  • The two judges who were made permanent are: Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund and Justice Mitali Thakuria.
  • In May 2024, the Supreme Court collegium had recommended that the two additional judges be made permanent.

  • The Central Government notified a fresh one-year term for Justice Rajesh Sekhri as additional judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

  • Meghwal held the same portfolio even during the previous NDA regime after then Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju was given the portfolio of the Ministry of Earth & Sciences.

  • Kerala High Court Advocates' Association (KHCAA) president Yeshwanth Shenoy wrote to the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court alleging that retired High Court judge Justice Mary Joseph is continuing to write judgments even after she demitted office in June.
  • Shenoy claimed that Justice Joseph has continued to visit her chambers in the High Court so that she can write judgments and backdate them.
  • Shenoy argued that though judges are usually permitted to continue holding on to their office for a month, that is only intended to let retired judges to clear out their personal belongings and not to carry out any pending administrative or judicial work.
