Justice Yahya Afridi Selected as Pakistan's Next Chief Justice amid Political Unrest

A special parliamentary committee in Pakistan appointed Justice Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice, bypassing the traditional seniority principle. This decision follows the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which granted the committee the authority to appoint the top judge, replacing the seniority-based elevation system. Afridi was chosen over two senior judges, Mansoor Ali Shah and Munib Akhtar, sparking concerns about deepening political turmoil.
The committee, with a two-thirds majority, selected Afridi, third on the seniority list. Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party boycotted the process, favoring Judge Shah's appointment. Pakistan Limits Chief Justice's Term to Three Years

Pakistan enacted the Constitution (26th Amendment) Act, 2024, limiting the Chief Justice's tenure to three years and establishing a special commission for appointing the top judge from three senior-most Supreme Court judges. The amendment received President Asif Ali Zardari's assent after being passed by both Houses of Parliament amid strong opposition from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The amendment was approved with a two-thirds majority in the Senate and passed by the National Assembly, garnering 225 votes out of 336.

Himachal Pradesh High Court Designates 11 Lawyers as Senior Advocates

The Himachal Pradesh High Court has designated 11 lawyers as Senior Advocates.
A notification to that effect was issued by the Registrar General of the High Court.
The lawyers who have been conferred the gown are: Anshul Bansal, Balram Sharma, Kashmir Singh Thakur, Neeraj Sharma, Peeyush Verma, Subhash Sharma, Suneet Goel, Sunil Mohan Goel, Tara Singh Chauhan, Vijay Kumar Arora and Viplav Sharma.

Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan Takes Over as Acting Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court

The President of India appointed Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan to assume the duties of the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. This appointment, under Article 223 of the Constitution of India, is effective from October 19, 2024, following the retirement of Chief Justice Rajiv Shakdher on October 18, 2024. Justice Chauhan's elevation as the Acting Chief Justice reflects his vast judicial experience and commitment to upholding justice in the state.

Lady Justice Sheds Blindfold

The Supreme Court (SC) of India unveiled a redesigned version of the 'Lady Justice' statue, marking a significant departure from its colonial past. Traditionally depicted with a blindfold and a sword, the new statue now features 'Lady Justice' with open eyes and the Constitution of India in place of the sword, reflecting the judiciary's commitment to constitutional values and justice that "sees everyone equally".
The new statue of Nyay ki Devi (Lady Justice) was unveiled at Supreme Court, featuring significant changes to its traditional form.
The removal of the blindfold from 'Lady Justice' is more than a visual change, it symbolises a shift in how the judiciary views justice in modern India. The blindfold, long associated with impartiality and equality before the law, was replaced with open eyes, a bold statement led by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud.
