Himachal Government to Launch Prestigious Awards for Teachers

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the state government plans to introduce awards for teachers and school heads to recognise their outstanding contributions to the education sector. The initiative aims to encourage more individuals to pursue teaching careers, promote effective teaching and learning methods in schools, and elevate the status of educators within the community.
  • As per reports, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that 24 teachers will receive awards across two categories: general areas and tribal/hard-to-reach areas. Out of these, 15 awards will be granted to teachers in general areas, while nine will be given to those serving in tribal and hard-to-reach regions.
  • Teachers eligible for these special awards will include those serving in District Institutes of Education and Training, State Council of Educational Research and Training, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, according to the Chief Minister.

Asia's First Health Research "Pre-Clinical Network Facility" Inaugurated in Faridabad

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated Asia's inaugural health research-related 'Pre-clinical Network Facility' in Haryana at Faridabad's Translational Health Science & Technology Institute (THSTI). This facility, selected by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), is notable as Asia's first and the 9th globally to handle BSL3 pathogens.
  • The facility includes one of India's largest small animal housing capacities, supporting research on immune-compromised mice and various species. Additionally, the inauguration of the "Genetically Defined Human Associated Microbial Culture Collection (Ge-HuMic) Facility" aims to foster national and international collaborations in microbial research.

IIT Guwahati Launches Innovative Projects for Educational Excellence in Meghalaya

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, as part of its strong commitment to elevate the educational landscape of the region, has been setting a benchmark for integrating technology and hands-on learning into school curriculums.
  • As the only IIT in Northeast India, the Institute has undertaken several innovative projects aimed at enhancing education in Meghalaya, focusing on advanced STEM learning and teacher development. These initiatives are designed to foster a hands-on, experiential learning environment, benefiting both students and teachers.
  • Under the aegis of the Ministry of Education's Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan Projects, IIT Guwahati, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Meghalaya, has undertaken multiple state-level initiatives to enhance STEM education, foster innovation, and build capacity among students and teachers in Meghalaya.

India Shines at 35th International Biology Olympiad 2024 in Kazakhstan

  • The Indian team, which participated at the 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2024 achieved remarkable success, with one student winning a gold medal and three students securing silver medals.
  • Vedant Sakre from Mumbai, Maharashtra won a gold medal while Ishan Pednekar from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, Shrijith Sivakumar from Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Yashashwi Kumar from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh bagged a silver medal each.
  • The 35th IBO was held at Astana, Kazakhstan. The team was led by two distinguished leaders, Prof. Sasikumar Menon from TDM Lab, Mumbai, and Dr. Mayuri Rege from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR and two Scientific Observers, Dr. Rajesh Patkar from IIT Bombay, and Dr. Devesh Suthar from M. S. University, Baroda.

IIT-Kharagpur, University of Leeds Collaborate for Joint Supervision of PhD Programmes

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Leeds (UoL) to recognise the growing importance of India and a long-term partnership with the university.
  • This collaboration aims to enhance academic and research cooperation through the joint supervision of PhD programmes in the fields of civil engineering, transport studies and biological sciences.

Serum Institute of India's New 'High Efficacy' Malaria Vaccine Rolls Out in Africa

  • A new "high efficacy" malaria vaccine co-developed by the Serum Institute of India (SII) and the University of Oxford was officially rolled out when Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa became the first country to begin administering R21/Matrix-M.
  • The vaccine, which was granted World Health Organisation (WHO) approval last year (2023), is said to have undergone a rigorous regulatory process and clinical assessment and was found to be highly effective and affordable. As a low-dose vaccine, it can be manufactured at speed and scale which is seen as critical to stemming the spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

Punjab's Fazilka District Introduces 'Bag-free' Day to Enhance Student Well-being

  • The Fazilka district administration in Punjab introduced a 'bag-free day' initiative in government primary schools to encourage creativity and provide a stress-free learning environment for students. Starting a few days ago, this initiative allows students to leave their school bags at home on the last Saturday of every month.
  • On these 'bag-free' days, traditional classes are replaced with co-curricular activities such as rafting, storytelling, class discussions, and yoga. Fazilka District Education Officer Shiv Pal highlighted that these activities aim to promote a stress-free learning experience, foster creativity, and support the holistic development of children.

IIM Sambalpur to Mentor Small Business Owners in Vernacular Language

  • In order to transform and promote business while preserving culture and heritage, IIM Sambalpur organised second edition of a 12-day weekend certificate programme called the 'Small Business Management Training Programme' for Master Weavers of Western Odisha in support with SIDBI. Conducted under the aegis of the Centre for Responsible Business, the programme is focused on various subjects including design, digital marketing, GST, Financial Management, Operation and communication skills.

Shah Inaugurates 'PM College of Excellence' in 55 MP Districts

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated 'Prime Minister's College of Excellence' for all 55 districts in Madhya Pradesh and hailed Narendra Modi's farsightedness in bringing in the New Education Policy amid the aim of making India a developed country by 2047.
  • Speaking at the main programme held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Arts and Commerce College in Indore, which has been developed as a PM College of Excellence, Shah praised MP for implementing the NEP ahead of other states.
  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and the state's Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar, among others, also addressed the gathering on the occasion.

Bihar's First Transgender Sub-Inspectors Make History

  • In a groundbreaking achievement, Manvi Madhu Kashyap and two other transgender individuals made history by becoming the first transwoman sub-inspectors in Bihar Police. Despite facing rejection and discrimination from coaching centres, Kashyap persevered and cleared the Bihar Police Subordinate Selection Commission (BPSSC) exams. East India's First Disabled Varsity at Ranchi: Jharkhand

  • The Jharkhand government is working on a plan to open eastern India's first university for physically challenged students in Ranchi (Jharkhand). The proposed university will offer education according to the needs of students with disabilities. Higher and Technical Education Minister Champai Soren directed officials to prepare a proposal to open the university for physically challenged students in Ranchi.

CBSE Gets Affiliated with School Games Federation of India

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) formalised its affiliation with the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). This partnership will allow winners of the CBSE National Games to participate in the SGFI National School Games starting from the 2024-25 academic year.
  • CBSE also issued a caution against an organisation named the CBSE Board School Games Welfare Society (CBSE-WSO) in Agra, which falsely claims affiliation with CBSE to organise sports events. Schools have been advised to avoid any engagement with this entity as it is not officially recognised by CBSE.

IIT Madras to Provide Rs. 5 crore to Sports Start-ups; to Introduce 4-Year Course on Sports Science

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) announced that they will provide an investment of up to Rs. 5 crore to selected sports start-ups for a period of five years. In a two day sports tech start-ups conclave which taook place in New Delhi, the institute announced that they aim to support at least 200 sports tech start-ups, in a period of five years.
  • The funding for the selected start-ups will be provided by the IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies.
