IIT Mandi Introduces MS & PhD programmes in Music and Musopathy

  • Indian Institute of Technology- Mandi (IIT-M) introduced MS (by research) and PhD programmes in Music and Musopathy. The programmes are open to both full-time and part-time candidates and can be pursued live, online, or in a hybrid format by all qualifying candidates, regardless of geographical location.
  • This initiative underscores IIT Mandi's commitment to promoting interdisciplinary learning and contributing to the highly regarded field of Indian music and the burgeoning field of Musopathy.
  • The M.S. and PhD programmes in Music and Musopathy are research-based, aimed at producing highly skilled professionals and researchers who can contribute meaningfully to the development and understanding of music and its beneficial impacts on individuals and society, including the wellness-centric field of Musopathy.

Raveendra Chittoor, Dean of Jio Institute, Resigns

  • Raveendra Chittoor, the dean of Jio Institute, resigned from his post less than a year after he was appointed, marking the second high-profile exit from the Reliance-backed institute this year (2024).
  • Chittoor has served as a professor of strategy and international business at the Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, Canada. He has also taught at the Indian School of Business and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and worked with IBM, CRISIL, and the Rajan Raheja Group.
  • The two exits have come at a time when Jio Institute continues to wait for its formal recognition by the Union government as an 'Institution of Eminence (IOE)'.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami Initiates Centre of Excellence in Garhwal

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructed the establishment of Centres of Excellence in both the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions to enhance technical education. During a review meeting of the Technical Education Department at the Secretariat, he emphasised the need for government technical institutes to maximise campus placements for their students.
  • CM Dhami also called for the inclusion of modern courses and up-to-date equipment in these institutes to meet the needs of industrial institutions.

Kerala Introduces New School Programmes, Sports Manual for Differently-abled

  • The Kerala government announced a series of academic and non-academic programmes in state-run schools, including a groundbreaking 'inclusive sports manual' for differently-abled children and a unique book for parents, both firsts in India.
  • Under the 'Helping Hand' initiative, the state aims to identify and support children struggling academically. Additionally, the "Beach-to-Bench' programme focuses on the holistic development of coastal children, covering academics, social skills, and sports.
  • State General Education Minister V Sivankutty introduced these initiatives for the 2024-25 academic year at a press conference. He highlighted the new book for parents were created as part of the state's curriculum revision.

IIT Madras Collaborates with Industry Partners to Offer Employability Focused Courses on Swayam Plus

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) partnered with multiple industries to offer employability-focused programmes on Swayam Plus. As many as 24 MoUs with leading industry partners across multiple sectors were signed to offer skill and employability-focused online courses and internships.
  • This takes Swayam Plus's total industry partners to 36. The MoUs cover a range of fields, including information technology, social sciences, banking and finance, soft skills, music, management, food science, Indian knowledge systems, and internships ensuring comprehensive coverage of skill development across areas crucial for future employability.
  • Swayam Plus, an initiative by the Ministry of Education and IIT Madras, was launched by Dharmendra Pradhan, Education Minister.

IIT-Gandhinagar, Asian Institute of Technology Launch Double Degree Master's Course

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, and the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, launched a double-degree master's programme, which allows students to pursue two separate postgraduate degrees from either institution, simultaneously.
  • The postgraduate courses covered under the double-degree programme are data science and artificial intelligence, bio-nano materials science and engineering, environmental engineering and management, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS), geotechnical and earth resources engineering, water engineering and management, and sustainable energy transition.

UGC Releases List of Universities without Appointed Ombudsperson

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) published an updated list of universities that have not yet appointed Ombudsperson(s) as required by the University Grants Commission (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations, 2023. The new list includes approximately 63 universities.
  • The updated list now comprises 46 state universities, six private universities, and 11 deemed universities that have yet to appoint Ombudsperson(s).

Tamil Nadu Unveils New Education Policy, Submits report to M. K. Stalin

  • The Justice D. Murugesan Committee, tasked with formulating the Tamil Nadu Education Policy, presented its comprehensive report to Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. This committee was established to develop an educational framework that honours Tamil Nadu's rich heritage, addresses current challenges, and aligns with future goals.
  • As per reports, the panel proposed a dual-language policy, emphasising Tamil and English, for the state's educational system. Additionally, the committee recommended the abolition of public examinations for classes 3, 5, and 8 in all state-run schools.

IIT Madras to Conduct 'Sports Tech Start-Up Conclave' in New Delhi

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA) is going to organise a 'Sports Tech start-Up Conclave' in New Delhi on July 12 and 13, 2024.
  • The conclave will showcase IIT Madras' commitment to promoting sports start-ups in India and its plans to technologically support the Indian Government in facilitating hosting the Olympics 2036. Supporting indigenisation in the sports goods manufacturing firms will also be a focus area.

IGNOU Launches 13 New Academic Programmes

  • The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched 13 new programs across IGNOU's various schools including 4 MBA programmes in new domains.
  • IGNOU's new programmes include; MBA in Construction Management, MBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, MBA in Agribusiness Management, MBA in Healthcare and Hospital Management, PG Diploma in Rehabilitation Psychology, PG Diploma in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, MA Geeta Studies, Certificate Programme in Early Childhood Special Education Enabling Inclusion – Visual Impairment, Certificate Programme in Early Childhood Special Education Enabling Inclusion – Hearing Impairment, Certificate Programme in Early Childhood Special Education Enabling Inclusion – Intellectual Disability, MSc (Home Science – Community Development and Extension Management).
