Gujarat Vidyapith Appoints Incharge VC after High Court Direction

  • A senior professor of the Gujarat Vidyapith was asked to take over as its in-charge vice chancellor, ahead of the High Court's deadline of January 17 for action against VC Rajendra Khimani, who resigned, based on a University Grants Commission report.
  • Professor Bharat Joshi, from the Department of Education of the Vidyapith, founded by Mahatma Gandhi, was asked to take charge until the new appointment is made. Joshi confirmed he received a call regarding the same. He agreed to take charge.
  • The UGC in November 2021 directed the chancellor of the Vidyapith, a deemed university based in Ahmedabad, to remove Khimani as VC after its inquiry report identified a procedural lapse in his appointment. There were also certain lapses on Khimani's part in the administrative and financial functioning of the Gujarat Vidyapith as the registrar between April 1, 2004, to April 30, 2019.

IIT Hyderabad Collaborates with Indian Navy to Establish CTIC

  • Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad collaborated with the Indian Navy's Weapons and Electronics Systems Engineering Establishment (WESEE) to make its research and academics more focused on national security.
  • This collaboration will lead to formulation and participation in joint research programmes to leapfrog the integration of transformational technology into products to be deployed on Indian Navy platforms.
  • A Co-Developmental Technology Innovation Centre has been established at IIT Hyderabad's Technology Research Park as the first step for this engagement. The collaboration is aimed at solving real-world problems by leveraging the deep tactical and technical expertise of WESEE and IIT Hyderabad.

IIT Roorkee Develops Water-based Printing Ink Tech

  • Researchers from IIT Roorkee and Afflatus Gravure Private Limited, Noida, created an environment-friendly technology for flexible printing. In accordance with a licencing agreement signed in front of IIT Roorkee Director Professor KK Pant, other representatives of the company, and the research team, the institute has transferred the two innovations to a reputable packaging company.
  • The technology was created by Dr. Anurag Kulshreshtha, Professor Millie Pant, Professor YS Negi (Rtd.), of IIT Roorkee, and Arun Pandey of Afflatus Gravures Pvt Ltd, in Noida. The technique is helpful for flexible packaging and will also be a sustainable choice.
  • The project's goal was to provide a printing solution that was very cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable. And so, the water-based printing ink is created for rotogravure printing on flexible packaging.

BHU Launches Certificate Programme in Artificial Intelligence

  • The Department of Computer Science at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) launched a new specialised training and six month certification programme on Artificial Intelligence.
  • The acdemic session is scheduled to begin from February 1 and conclude in July. A total of 100 seats are being offered by BHU under this programme, and admissions will be done on entrance test basis.
  • Candidates who have bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, technology or equivalent are eligible to appear for the entrance exam. There is no course fee for the programme and all the participants who complete the course successfully will be awarded a certificate.

'Saarang 2023' India's Largest Student-run Festival Begins at IIT Madras

  • The 28th edition of Saarang, India's largest student-run festival began at IIT Madras. Saarang 2023 will feature more than 100 events with participation from 500 colleges across the country. The Saarang 2023 is one of the largest student-run festivals held completely in physical mode. It is expected to see over 80,000 people at the festival. The fest will be held till January 15, 2023.
  • The theme of this year's Saarang edition is 'Mystic Hues' which celebrates how intertwined colors are with culture and tradition.
  • IIT Madras is hosting the Saarang 2023 after two years post Covid-19 pandemic.

Indian High Commission to Establish Hindi Chair at Sabaragamuwa University

  • The Indian High Commission signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka to establish a Hindi Chair. The MoU was signed by High Commissioner Gopal Baglay, and Vice Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University Professor Udaya Rathnayake.
  • The MoU aims to establish the Hindi Chair as a part of India's cultural connection through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. The Hindi chair will help in familiarizing students of Sabaragamuwa University with India, its history, and its culture. It will also pave the way for popularising Hindi by deputing Indian faculties.
  • The Indian Mission will also award a gold medal to the best-performing student of the Hindi Chair.
  • The Sabaragamuwa University is a public university located in Belihuloya, Balangoda, Sri Lanka.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Inaugurates School of Logistics, Waterways and Communication in...

  • The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Manik Saha, Chief Minister, Tripura inaugurated the School of Logistics, Waterways and Communication in Agartala, Tripura. The school will enable the rich pool of talent of the region to become world class experts in the transportation and logistics sector. In order to unlock the promised economic potential of the north-east, the school will be enable the innate capacity of human resources along our opulent waterways.
  • The Centre for Logistic, Communication and Waterways would facilitate in conducting studies/research, training, workshops/seminars for stakeholders like businesses, exporters/importers, Chambers of Commerce and Industries, local entrepreneurs, tourist operators etc. It has been set up under State Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (SIPARD). SIPARD is an autonomous body funded by the Government of Tripura and partially by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India.

Assam to Assess Students in State-wide Drive

  • The Assam government will carry out 'Gunotsav 2023', a state-wide exercise to evaluate the performance of nearly 43 lakh students studying in over 44,500 schools, from January 18 to February 18, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said.
  • Pegu said that the exercise will help the Education Department in ensuring quality education with improved learning outcomes.
  • Gunotsav 2023 will identify the learning gaps of each child and ensure quality education with grade-specific outcomes. It will also assess the performance of schools in areas such as scholastic, co-scholastic, availability and utilisation of infrastructure and community participation.

Uganda Ends WHO's Mandatory 42-day Countdown to be Declared Ebola-free

  • Uganda ended a 42-day countdown to be declared Ebola-free with no case reported in the period.
  • Uganda's Health Minister hailed the public for its vigilance in helping end the Ebola Sudan Virus outbreak, which was first reported in the country on September 20, 2022.
  • As per WHO, for a country to be declared Ebola-free, it should spend 42 days (two 21-day incubation cycles of the virus) without any new cases reported.

Govt. Approves Renaming of National Institute on Water after S.P. Mookerjee

  • The National Centre for Drinking Water, Sanitation and Quality in Kolkata was renamed as Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institution of Water and Sanitation.
  • The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave ex-post facto approval to the proposal to rename the institute set up on 8.72 acres of land in Joka, Kolkata.
  • The Prime Minister had inaugurated the institute in December 2022.
  • It is envisaged as a premier institute to develop capacities in states and Union territories in the field of public health engineering, drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene through training programmes.
