World Rose Day

  • World Rose Day is annually celebrated on September 22 in dedication to the welfare of cancer patients. On this day people around the world work towards bringing cheer and hope into the lives of all those people who have been affected by cancer. More importantly, it seeks to remind patients and their caregivers, that they are not alone in this battle against the deadly disease.
  • World Rose Day for the Welfare of Cancer Patients was first observed in honour of 12-year-old Melinda Rose from Canada, who was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer known as Askin's Tumour. The doctors had also given hope on her and said that she has only six weeks more to live but instead of mourning over it she decided to enjoy the last moments of her life with full joy and enthusiasm and like this she on to live for six months until she passed away.
  • She spent her time bringing joy and hope to all the diagnosed people around her. She reached out to all the cancer patients, sharing poems, letters and emails with them, to bring some cheer into their lives. Her kindness and optimism serve as a reminder to us all, that even in the bleakest of all situations, hope is what keeps us going.

World Rhino Day

  • Every year on September 22, World Rhino Day is observed to spread awareness about the different Rhinoceros species and the dangers they face. This day also celebrates all five rhino species namely the Sumatran, Black, Greater One-horned, Javan, and White rhino species.
  • This day aims to spread the importance of protecting these animals, as Rhinoceros have become critically endangered in the wild due to ongoing poaching and habitat loss over many years.
  • The day's announcement was done in 2010 by WWF-South Africa. When Lisa Jane Campbell, the founder of Annamitici and owner of the Chishakwe Ranch in Zimbabwe, teamed up with Rhishja Cota, the event's creative director in 2011 to raise awareness about the need to preserve or protect all five species of rhinos from extinction.
  • World Rhino Day 2022 was observed under the theme- 'Five Rhino Species Forever'.

International Day of Peace

  • The International Day of Peace is observed globally on September 21. The United National General Assembly marks the day by promoting ideals of peace among nations and people by observing non-violence and ceasefire for 24 hours.
  • Declared by the UN in 1981, this day provides a "globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace."
  • Also known as World Peace Day, it was later in 2001 that the official date was declared as September 21. Until then, it was observed on the inaugural session of the annual General Assembly, the third Tuesday of September.
  • The theme for International Day of Peace 2022 was "End racism. Build peace."

World Alzheimer's Day

  • World Alzheimer's Day is celebrated on September 21 each year. On this day, the world concentrates its efforts on creating awareness of Alzheimer's disease. The disease is among the most prevalent forms of dementia; a set of disorders that disrupt mental function. World Alzheimer's Day is the perfect opportunity for us to raise our voices and find new ways of fighting the disease's effects.
  • In 1994, Alzheimer's Disease International introduced World Alzheimer's Day in Edinburgh during their annual conference on September 21 to mark their 10th anniversary. ADI coordinates World Alzheimer's Day and World Alzheimer's Month across the globe, working with member organizations and associations to organize events and create awareness.

International Equal Pay Day

  • International Equal Pay Day is celebrated on 18 September. The inaugural edition of the day was observed in the year 2020. The day aims to achieve equal pay for work of equal value and break the walls against all forms of discrimination, including discrimination against women and girls.
  • The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to observe September 18 as International Equal Pay Day, on November 15, 2019, which was introduced by the Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC). The resolution was co-sponsored by a total of 105 member states. As well as recognising the contribution of workers' and employers' organizations, and businesses, the resolution also acknowledged the work and contribution of EPIC to achieving equal pay.

World Bamboo Day

  • World Bamboo Day is observed on September 18 every year with the aim to raise awareness to conserve and promote the bamboo industry.
  • World Bamboo Day was founded by Kamesh Salam as former president of the World Bamboo Organisation in 2009 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok.
  • Bamboo is known as a poor man's timber and green gold. Bamboo grows fast, is low on maintenance, and has versatile potential.
  • Known as 'poor man's timber', bamboo is omnipresent in tribal cultures and community living. Rural communities engage with bamboo handicrafts, textiles, artifacts, and household utilities.
  • Bamboo has environmental benefits as it can be planted to reclaim severely degraded sites and wastelands. It also plays a significant role in soil and water conservation. It is also a good soil binder.

World Patient Safety Day

  • World Patient Safety Day is celebrated on 17 September each year.
  • International Patient Safety Day is a day to raise awareness of patient safety issues and to promote best practices for reducing the risk of medical injury.
  • World Patient Safety Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • World Patient Safety Day was established in May 2019 when the 72nd World Health Assembly adopted resolution WHA 72.6 on 'Global action on patient safety'.
  • The theme for World Patient Safety Day 2022 was 'Medication Safety'.

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

  • September 16 marks the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. In 1987, representatives from 24 countries met in Canada's Montreal to discuss the alarming situation of depleting the Ozone layer. The countries agreed on the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, calling for the world to get rid of the substances that cause Ozone depletion. In December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly designated September 16 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The world celebrated the first International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16th, 1995.
  • The theme announced by the UN Environment Programme for International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2022 was 'Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth.'
