The Indian Navy warship INS Mumbai joined a nine-nation maritime exercise being conducted near the busiest shipping routes – the Malacca, Sunda and Lombok straits.
Among those at the exercise are the Navies of the US, the UK, Canada, France, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
The exercise named La Perouse, is being held from January 16, to 24, 2025.

IPS G P Singh New Director General of CRPF
The Centre appointed senior IPS officer G. P. Singh as the Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre was appointed days after the Ministry of Home Affairs proposed his name.
Singh has a reputation for being a tough cop. He also worked with the SPG. Since 2013, he was on central deputation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) where he served as Inspector General.

Ministry of Defence (MoD) Signs a Contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL)
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) for the Indian Navy at a cost of approximately Rs. 2,960 crore.
The agreement was inked in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.
The MRSAM system, a high-response, quick-reaction, vertically launched supersonic missile, is designed to neutralise enemy aerial threats, including missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, and helicopters.
It is already in use by the Army, Navy, and Air Force in various configurations. The system has a range of up to 70 km.
The missiles will be supplied under the 'Buy (Indian)' category, with significant indigenous content.

MHA Approves Expansion of CISF with Two New Battalions
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) approved a major expansion of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which will create two new battalions.
Each newly sanctioned battalion will consist of 1,025 personnel, bringing the total number of CISF battalions from 13 to 15 and creating 2,050 new posts.
Both battalions will be led by officers of senior commandant rank. These units will play a crucial role in addressing increasing demands on the CISF, particularly in areas such as internal security and the management of high-security jails.

India Successfully Tests Indian Army's First Bhargavastra, Counter-drone Micro-missile System
India has successfully tested the Bhargavastra, its first micro-missile system to counter swarm drones. It is designed to counter the threat of swarm drones. It was developed by Economic Explosives Ltd. Bhargavastra detects small flying machines over 6 km and hits targets over 2.5 km.
It uses guided micro-munitions and can fire more than 64 micro missiles simultaneously. The system operates in all terrains, including high-altitude areas. It fulfills Army Air Defence requirements, marking India's first counter-drone system with micro missiles.
