Indian Army and IAF Execute 'Winged Raider' in Eastern Theatre

UK, India Boost Defence Ties with New Partnership

  • The UK-India strategic partnership took another major step forward with the formal launch of Defence Partnership-India (DP-I) and the signing of several defence agreements at the Aero India show. Announcing DP-I, UK Defence Minister Lord Vernon Coaker inaugurated the UK-India Defence Partnership Pavilion, establishing a dedicated programme office within the UK's Ministry of Defence to serve as a one-stop shop for strengthening bilateral defence collaboration between the two countries.
  • The UK and India agreed to expand their collaboration on next-generation weapons with Thales and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). Thales and BDL signed a contract to deliver Laser Beam Riding MANPADs (LBRM), with an initial supply of High Velocity Missiles (STARStreak) and launchers set for delivery this year (2025).

DRDO Reshapes Research Focus for Stronger Defence R&D

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) took a major step towards enhancing its research focus by redefining and expanding its Research Verticals and Thrust Areas across its Industry Academia – Centres of Excellence (DIA-CoEs). Announced by the Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management (DFTM) at DRDO headquarters in New Delhi, this move aims to streamline research efforts, incorporate cutting-edge technologies, and strengthen India's defence capabilities.
  • Earlier, DRDO had 65 Research Verticals across 15 DIA-CoEs, but with this expansion, the number has grown to 82. This shift ensures that DRDO laboratories can explore future technology requirements in greater depth, especially in deep technology research areas. By refining the research focus, DRDO aims to enhance innovation, collaboration, and efficiency in defence research.
  • The primary objective behind this expansion is to minimise redundancy and optimise resource utilisation. This restructuring also allows for better synergy between academia, industry, and DRDO to accelerate the development of advanced defence technologies.

HAL Renames Its Jet Trainer HJT-36 as 'Yashas' at Aero India 2025

  • At the prestigious Aero India 2025, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) revealed that the Hindustan Jet Trainer (HJT-36), a critical aircraft in the Indian Air Force's training fleet, underwent extensive modifications and was officially renamed 'Yashas'. The new name was unveiled by Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Department of Defence Production), in the presence of D. K. Sunil, Chairman & Managing Director of HAL, and other senior officials. 
  • The HJT-36, originally designed as an intermediate trainer aircraft, underwnr significant changes aimed at enhancing its departure characteristics and spin resistance across the entire flight envelope. The upgrades to the aircraft address vital aspects of its handling and stability, making it a modern, highly capable training tool for the evolving needs of military aviation.

India and Mongolia Border Forces Discuss Mutual Cooperation during DG-level Talks

  • The border forces of India and Mongolia decided to undertake joint exercises and enhance mutual cooperation in the frontier protection domain.
  • The Border Security Force (BSF) and the Mongolian General Authority for Border Protection (GABP) concluded their 10th Director General (DG)-level talks in New Delhi.
  • The Indian side was led by BSF DG Daljit Singh Chawdhary while the Mongolian delegation was headed by Maj Gen Lkhagvasuren KH, Head of GABP and Commander of Border Troops.

Rajnath Singh Inaugurates 'Aero India'

  • The 15th edition of 'Aero India', billed as Asia's largest air show, was inaugurated in Bengaluru on February 10 by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who said that this is a platform that showcases the "strength, resilience and self-reliance" of a new India.
  • Organised in a total area of over 42,000 sq m and with the confirmed participation of over 900 exhibitors, including 150 foreign companies, the event is the biggest-ever 'Aero India' till date.
  • 'Aero India' is a biennial air show and aviation exhibition, which is held in Bengaluru, organised by the Defence Exhibition Organisation, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence.
  • It is India's premier aerospace and defence exhibition where global aero vendors and the Indian Air Force (IAF) thrill the spectators with back-to-back aerobatic flying displays.

Dynauton Systems Unveil India's First Jet-Powered Loitering Munition 'Kaatil'

  • Dynauton Systems, a division of Dynamatic Technologies Limited, unveiled 'Kaatil,' India's first jet-based loitering munition, at Aero India 2025. Kaatil, which translates to 'killer' in Hindi, is a domestically designed and developed loitering munition. It showcases India's growing capabilities in indigenous defence technology.
  • Kaatil differs from traditional loitering munitions because it is equipped with landing gear, which allows it to take off like a conventional UAV, enabling reuse in certain conditions.

Defence Ministry Signs over Rs. 10,000-crore Contract for Pinaka Rocket System

  • The government inked contracts worth more than Rs. 10,000 crore with defence entities for procurement of Area Denial Munition Type-1 and high-explosive rockets with enhanced range for Pinaka multiple launch rocket system, seeking to enhance Indian Army's firepower capabilities. The defence ministry in a statement also said that a contract for upgrade in Shakti software was also signed with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
  • The ministry inked contracts with Economic Explosive Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) for "procurement of Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 (DPICM) and High Explosive Pre Fragmented (HEPF) Mk-1 (Enhanced) rockets respectively for Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) at a total cost of Rs. 10,147 crore.

Iran Inaugurates Its First Drone-carrier Warship

  • Iran inaugurated its first drone-carrier warship, saying the vessel is capable of operating in oceans far from its mainland.
  • The vessel, manned by the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard's navy, can carry several squadrons of drones as well as helicopters and cruise missiles. Named 'Shahid Bagheri,' it's capable of launching cruise missiles.
  • With a 180-meter-long runway for drones, the vessel can travel up to 22,000 nautical miles without needing to refuel in ports.
