'Mahabharat' Actor Praveen Kumar Sobti Dies

  • Actor-athlete Praveen Kumar Sobti, best known for playing Bheem in the TV series 'Mahabharat' and for winning Asian Games gold medals, died. He was 74.
  • Praveen represented the country across various athletic events in hammer and discus throw and even won four medals at the Asian Games, including two gold medals in 1966 and 1970.
  • He also won a silver medal in hammer throw during the 1966 Commonwealth Games.
  • The athlete gained further popularity after he began his acting career and featured as Bheem in BR Chopra's classic 'Mahabharat' in 1988.

Uttarakhand Appoint Akshay Kumar as Brand Ambassador

  • Bollywood star Akshay Kumar was appointed as the brand ambassador of Uttarakhand, the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced ahead of Assembly Elections 2022.
  • In 2021, cricketer Rishabh Pant, who hails from Roorkee, was appointed as Uttarakhand's brand ambassador. In 2017, Kumar was appointed as the state's brand ambassador for 'Swachhata Abhiyan'.

Kabir of Karnataka' Ibrahim Sutar Passes Away

  • Padma Shri awardee and social worker Ibrahim Sutar passed away in Karnataka. He was 81.
  • Fondly referred to as the "Kabir of Kannada", Sutar was known for his work towards spreading social and communal harmony. Ibrahim is popular among the public, especially in north Karnataka, for his spiritual discourses. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2018.
  • The founder of 'Bhavaikyate Bhajana Mela' began his career as a Harikathe bhajan singer going around villages and towns. He regaled audiences with stories from Hindu and Islamic scriptures always leaving with a message of harmony, and need for ethics in personal life. He sang songs and gave lectures, quoting from multiple scriptures without the need to read from notes. He was equally well-versed in Kannada and Urdu.

Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar Passes Away

  • Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92.
  • The last rites of the megastar were performed with full state honours at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.
  • Born in 1929, Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest of five siblings, including Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. She was awarded Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke awards.
  • Lata was born to classical musician Pt Deenanath Mangeshkar and began her career as a singer and part actor when she was 13.
  • In 1945, Lata Mangeshkar scripted her first hit with Mahal's hauntingly beautiful song, "Aayega aanewala", and then there was no looking back as she rendered playback singing for great hits like Baiju Bawra, Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India among several others.
  • She recorded her songs in over 36 regional Indian and foreign languages.

Veteran BJP Leader Chandupatla Janga Reddy Passes Away

  • Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Chandupatla Janga Reddy passed away in Hyderabad. He was 86.
  • Reddy was an effective voice for the BJP at a very critical phase of the Party's trajectory.
  • C. Janga Reddy Garu devoted his life to public service. He was an integral part of the efforts to take the Jana Sangh and BJP to new heights of success. He made a place in the hearts and minds of several people. He also motivated many Karyakartas.
  • Reddy had defeated Congress stalwart P. V. Narasimha Rao, who went on to become India's Prime Minister in 1991.

Padma Awardee Farmer who Turned Barren Land into Heavenly Orchard

  • Amai Mahalinga Naik, an innovative farmer from Karnataka's Adyanadka village in Dakshina Kannada, was conferred with the Padma Shri award 2022 for transforming a barren sloping hill into a fertile farm.
  • Using the innovative Zero-Energy Micro-Irrigation System, Naik turned a barren plot of land into an oasis comprising Arecanut Palms, Coconut Trees, Cashew Trees, Banana Saplings, and Pepper Vines.

Former Tripura Assembly Speaker R. C. Debnath Passes Away

  • Veteran CPI(M) leader and former speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly Ramendra Chandra Debnath died in Kolkata. He was 66.
  • Debnath was the sitting MLA of Yubarajnagar assembly constituency. He won the seat for the first time in 1993 and won it for six times.
  • He was the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly for three terms.
