Indo-Tibetan Border Police Team Scales Mount Abi Gamin

An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) mountaineering team scaled Mount Abi Gamin located at an altitude of 24,131 feet in Uttarakhand. The expedition, undertaken by the ITBP'S Northern Frontier, was launched from Dehradun and the team returned to the base camp.
The team, led by Deputy Commandant Kuldeep Kumar of the 2nd Battalion, comprised 14 personnel, including two Assistant Commandants, and four local sherpas. Abi Gamin is located in the central Himalayas at the culminating point of the Zaskar range.

At 83, Japanese Oldest to Sail Solo across Pacific

An 83-year-old Japanese adventurer successfully completed his solo, non-stop voyage across the Pacific, becoming the oldest person to reach the milestone. Kenichi Horie arrived in the Kii Strait off Japan's western coast, completing his trans-Pacific voyage in 69 days after leaving a yacht harbour in San Francisco in March 2022.
It was the latest achievement for the octogenarian adventurer, who in 1962 became the first person in the world to successfully complete a solo non-stop voyage across the Pacific from Japan to San Francisco. Sixty years later, he travelled the opposite route.

Sachin Tendulkar to Continue as UNICEF's Goodwill Ambassador for 20th Year

Sachin Tendulkar will continue as United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) 'Goodwill Ambassador' for a record 20th year, working for the welfare of underprivileged children. The iconic cricketer has been associated with UNICEF for a long for various causes. In his almost two-decade-long partnership with UNICEF, he has been vital in furthering the campaigns, especially the ones aimed at providing a better future for underprivileged children.
In 2003, he was chosen to take lead in the initiative to create awareness and promote polio prevention in India. Later in 2008, he was roped in to create and promote hygiene and sanitation among communities and has been continuing to do so over the years. In 2013, he was appointed UNICEF Ambassador for South Asia to advocate good hygiene and sanitation across the region. In 2019, he went on a three-day trip to Nepal to raise awareness for UNICEF Nepal's 'Bat for Brain Development' campaign.

'Saint of Santoor' Bhajan Sopori Dies

Santoor maestro Bhajan Sopori, often referred to as the 'saint of santoor' and 'king of strings' for his mastery over the instrument, died following a battle with cancer. He was 73. Sopori's death comes just weeks after santoor virtuoso Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, who also belonged to Kashmir and took the stringed instrument to the classical music stage, died on May 10.
Sopori received multiple awards through his career, including the Padma Shri in 2004, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992 and the Jammu and Kashmir State Lifetime Achievement Award. The musician-composer belonged to north Kashmir's Sopore district and came from the 'Sufiana Gharana'.
Sopori composed music for over 6,000 songs in almost all Indian languages, including Hindi, Kashmiri, Dogri, Sindhi, Urdu and Bhojpuri, as well as Persian and Arabic. In 2011, Sopori was honoured with a Rs. 5 stamp, a special tribute by the Indian Postal Department for his extraordinary work in the field of art and culture.

INA Veteran Anjalai Ponnusamy Passes Away

Indian National Army (INA) veteran solider from Malaysia, Anjalai Ponnusamy passed away at the age of 102. She was born in 1920 in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.
During World War II when Japanese forces invaded Malaysia, then she joined the army.
She belonged to the Jhansi Rani Division of the Indian National Army. It was created by SC Bose in 1943 to recapture India from British rule. After the defeat of Japan in World War II, the Indian National Army was disbanded.

Bhim Singh, J&K Panthers Party Founder, Passes Away

Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party founder Prof Bhim Singh died after a prolonged illness. He was 82. The veteran leader was affectionately called 'Sher-e-Jammu' for raising the voice of the people of Jammu before the successive Kashmir-centric governments. He is survived by his wife and son.
In November 2020, he was expelled from the party he had founded for taking part in a meeting of the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) at the Bhatindi residence of former chief minister Farooq Abdullah. Prof Bhim had raised the Panthers Party in 1982.
Panthers Party suffered a major setback in recent times after its chairperson and former education minister Harsh Dev Singh besides former MLAs Balwant Singh Mankotia and Yash Paul Kundal quit the party and joined the AAP.

Eminent Singer KK Passes Away in Kolkata

Singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, passed away at the age of 53. He was performing at an event in Kolkata. He was brought to the CMRI hospital and declared dead. He performed in the iconic Nazrul Mancha auditorium till 8:30 pm. He suddenly fell ill and returned to his hotel. When his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to the CMRI hospital in Kolkata, where he was declared dead.
KK had performed in to back-to-back shows in Kolkata in the past two days.

Legendary Jockey Lester Piggott Dies

The nine-time Epsom Derby winning jockey, legendary flat race jockey Lester Piggott died aged 86. Piggott is widely regarded as one of the greatest jockeys in the sport's history.
The 11-time British champion jockey rode 16 Irish classic winners at the track largely due to his partnership with trainer Vincent O'Brien. His first Derby winner came when he was just 18 on Never Say Die in 1954 with his ninth and last Teenoso in 1983.
Piggott rode his first winner, The Chase, at Haydock in 1948 when just 12 years of age and his last win came with Palacegate Jack at the same track in 1994, a few weeks short of his 59th birthday. He retired for a final time in 1995. He rode 4,493 winners, the third highest tally in British racing history behind only Gordon Richards and Pat Eddery.
