OPEC Head Mohammad Barkindo Dies

  • OPEC Secretary General, Nigeria's Mohammad Barkindo, died unexpectedly at the age of 63, leaving the oil cartel without a head at a tumultuous time for the markets.
  • Barkindo headed the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries since 2016 and was scheduled to be replaced by Kuwait's Haitham Al-Ghais next month.
  • Under his stewardship, the cartel forged ties with 10 other oil-producing countries, such as Russia, to form a wider group known as OPEC+ in a bid to better tame global oil prices, rocked by the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and more recently the war in Ukraine.

Gandhian Gopinathan Nair No More

  • Gandhian Gopinathan Nair, a social worker who participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942, and imbibed the principles of peace and non-violence in everyday life, passed away. He was 99.
  • Born in Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram on July 7, 1922, Nair served as chairman of the Kerala Mahatma Gandhi National Memorial Trust, managed by the Union Government.
  • A recipient of the Padma Shri in 2016, Nair had past association with the Bhoodan and Gramdan movements led by Vinoba Bhave.

Jayshree Ullal, Billionaire Indian-American CEO, Among Richest Self-made Women in US

  • Jayshree Ullal, CEO of Arista Networks, is one of only five Indian-Americans on Forbes' list of America's richest self-made women. With a net worth of $1.9 billion Ullal ranked 15th on the list.
  • Forbes released its eighth annual list of America's richest self-made women last month. Jayshree Ullal is the richest Indian-American on the list.
  • The other four women are Neerja Sethi ranked 24th, Neha Narkhede ranked 57th, Indira Nooyi ranked 85th and Reshma Shetty.

Karnataka's Sini Shetty Crowned Femina Miss India World

  • Sini Shetty won the title of Femina Miss India 2022. Shetty will now represent India at the 71st Miss World pageant. Shetty was crowned Femina Miss India World 2022 by her predecessor Miss India 2020, Manasa Varanasi at JIO World Convention Center in Mumbai.
  • Hailing from Karnataka, Shetty was born in Mumbai in 2001. She holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and financing, is currently pursuing a course in Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
  • Shetty's win in Femina Miss India 2022 added another gem to Karnataka, as before her many women from the state have won the title. These include Lara Dutta, Sarah Jane Dias, and Sandhya Chib, Nafisa Joseph, Rekha Hande, and Lymaraina D' Souza.

Veteran Film Director Tarun Majumdar Passes Away

  • Acclaimed film director Tarun Majumdar, who is known for making movies based on compelling tales highlighting the life of middle-class families, died in a Kolkata. He was 92.
  • Notable among his works are 'Kancher Swarga' (1962), 'Palatak' (1963), 'Kuheli' (1971), Shriman Prithviraj (1972), 'Balika Badhu' (1976), 'Thagini' (1974), 'Ganadevata' (1978), Dadar Kirti (1980), 'Bhalobasa Bhalobasa' (1986).
  • Majumdar, who received Padma Shri in 1990, has five Filmfare awards to his credit.

Veteran Diplomat Satinder Lambah Dies

  • Veteran diplomat Satinder Lambah, who was twice India's Special Envoy under different regimes, passed away at the age of 81.
  • Known for helming India's turnaround in ties with Pakistan during a decade-long stint as Special Envoy on Pakistan under the UPA government, Lambah was also India's Special Envoy for Afghanistan in the critical period between 2001 and 2004 when India was re-establishing itself in Kabul post Taliban I period.
  • Academic Amitabh Mattoo had once said Lambah was among six Indian diplomats who never became Foreign Secretary but impacted India's foreign policy more than most Foreign Secretaries.

Hockey: World Cup Winner Varinder Singh Passes Away

  • Known for his versatility and efficiency on the hockey field and his gentle nature off it, World Cup winner and Olympics medallist Varinder Singh passed away in Jalandhar.
  • Varinder, considered one of the best players in the right-half position, was 75. An India team regular in the 1970s, Varinder was part of the side that won the historic gold medal at the 1975 World Cup. He also had a World Cup silver medal from the 1973 edition, an Olympics bronze medal, won in 1972, and two Asian Games silver medals, won in 1974 and 1978. He also participated at the 1976 Olympics.
