Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tributes to mathematician R.L. Kashyap who passed away at the age of 85.
R.L. Kashyap worked as a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computers for three decades at Purdue University in America. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 by the central government for his considerable service in the field of studying the Vedas.
Kashyap received many international awards for his immense contributions to the fields of science and technology. Kashyap also wrote more than 250 research papers.

Independent India's First Voter Shyam Saran Negi Dies
The first citizen of independent India to ever cast a vote, Shyam Saran Negi, died at the age of 106 at his residence in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur.
He cast his postal vote for the assembly elections on November 2, 2022 for the 34th time.
Born on July 1, 1917, Negi worked as a schoolteacher in Kalpa. When India held its first general elections in 1951 after the end of British rule in 1947, Negi was the first one to cast his vote on October 25.

Elaben Bhatt: Prominent Gandhian, Founder of SEWA Passes Away
Elaben Bhatt, founder of Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and renowned Gandhian, passed away in Ahmedabad. She was 89 years old.
Bhatt was a qualified lawyer and had served as the chairperson of the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust (SAPMT) in the past.
She was among the foremost Gandhians of India. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Ela founded SEWA in 1972 which today has a membership of over 2 million self-employed women across 18 states in India.
She later founded the Women's World Banking (WWB), a network of microfinance institutions. Between 1984 and 1988, she was the chairperson of WWB. At one time, she also served as the advisor to the World Bank.
Bhatt was appointed as the chancellor of the Gujarat Vidyapith, which was also founded by Gandhi. But in 2022, she resigned from the post.
In 1985, she received India's fourth-highest civilian honour, Padma Shri. Subsequently, in 1986 she won the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan. In 2011, for her efforts in empowering women through entrepreneurship, Bhatt received the Gandhi Peace Prize.
