World's Oldest Person, Lucile Randon, Passes Away

  • The world's oldest known person, French nun Lucile Randon, died aged 118 in the city of Toulon.
  • The sister was recognised as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 in 2022.
  • Lucile Randon, also known as Sister Andre, was born in 1904 in the French town of Ales. A born survivor, she lived through the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918 and two World Wars.

Mukarram Jah, Titular Eighth Nizam of Hyderabad, Passes Away

  • Mukarram Jah, the titular Nizam VIII, passed away in Istanbul, Turkey. He was 89.
  • The eighth Nizam was born in 1933 and moved to Turkey where he was residing till his death.
  • Mukarram Jah was born to Prince Azam Jah and Princess Durru Shehvar, the imperial princess of the Ottoman Empire, on October 6, 1933 in France.
  • He was coronated as Asaf Jah the Eighth on April 6, 1967, after the passing away of Mir Osman Ali Khan in February 1967.

Renowned Scientist, Former CSIR Director A. D. Damodaran Paases Away

  • Leading scientist and former director of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) A. D. Damodaran died. He was 87.
  • He was associated with leading nuclear science and research institutes in the country. He had worked with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of Kerala to give advice at various levels.

R'Bonney Gabriel Crowned 71st Miss Universe 2022

  • R'Bonney Gabriel from the USA was crowned Miss Universe 2022. At the grand finale of the 71st Miss Universe contest, which took place, Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu crowned the diva. In the 71st edition of the competition, Venezuela's Amanda Dudamel took the second place, followed by Dominican Republic's Andreina Martinez as the second runner-up. Over 80 women from all over the world competed for the coveted title of Miss Universe during the three-hour competition, which was held at New Orleans' Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
  • Divita Rai of India reached the top 16, but she was unable to advance further.

Former JD(U) President Sharad Yadav Passes Away

  • Former JD(U) president and ex-convener of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance Sharad Yadav passed away. He was 75.
  • Yadav became a Lok Sabha member first from Jabalpur (MP), then Madhepura (Bihar) and later Badaun (UP). He was a seven-term Lok Sabha MP and a four-term Rajya Sabha MP, having served in public life for nearly 50 years after getting elected to the fifth Lok Sabha for the first time in 1974 from Jabalpur.
  • He was arrested under the controversial Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency.
  • In 1997, Yadav became the Janata Dal chief. The veteran later headed the JD(U), formed in 2003 with the merger of Samata Party and the Janata Dal faction headed by him. Between 2003 and 2016, Yadav remained the JD(U) chief.

Constantine II, Last King of Greece Dies

  • Greece's last King Constantine II died aged 82.
  • Constantine II ascended to the throne in 1964 during a turbulent period in Greek history that culminated in a military coup three years later.
  • He was soon forced to flee abroad following an unsuccessful counter-coup. The monarchy was abolished in 1973.
  • Constantine II was later stripped of his Greek citizenship.

Padma Awardee Dr. Tehemton E. Udwadia "Father of Laparoscopic Surgery" Passes Away

  • Padma Awardee Dr. Tehemton Erach Udwadia, an Indian surgeon and gastroenterologist, who was known as the 'father of laparoscopic surgery in India' passed away, at the age of 88. He was born on 15th July 1934 in the Bombay Presidency, British India (now Mumbai, Maharashtra, India).
  • Tehemton E Udwadia pursued medicine and started his career as a research fellow at the King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College in 1958 and stayed till 1962.
  • In 1993, he found the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons and he served as its President from 1993 to 1998.
  • He was the 1st surgeon in India to introduce laparoscopy in surgery in 1972, and the 1st to perform laparoscopic surgery in the developing world in 1990.
  • He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country's third highest civilian award, in 2017.
