Ecuadorian sprinter Alex Quiñónez was fatally shot in the port city of Guayaquil.
Quiñónez, who was 32, became a national hero in 2012 when he reached the 200-metre final at the London Games, finishing seventh in a race won by Usain Bolt.
Then in 2019 he became the first Ecuadorian athlete to win a global medal in a track event when he finished third at the World Championships in Doha.

Colin Powell, the trailblazing soldier and diplomat whose sterling reputation of service to Republican and Democratic presidents was stained by his faulty claims to justify the 2003 US war in Iraq, died of Covid-19 complications. He was 84. He instead joined President George W. Bush's administration in 2001 as secretary of state. He was the first Black person to represent the US government on the world stage.

IMF's Chief Economist Gita Gopinath will leave her job in January next year and return to the prestigious Harvard University, according to the global financial institution.
The 49-year-old prominent Indian-American economist had joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the Chief Economist in January 2019.
She was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University when she joined the Washington-based global lender.
US Court Rejects Plea filed by Nirav Modi
In a major blow to Nirav Modi, a bankruptcy court in the US has rejected a petition of the fugitive diamond merchant and two of his associates, seeking dismissal of fraud allegations against them by the trustee of three companies they previously owned indirectly.
The allegations were made in a New York court by Richard Levin, the court appointed trustee of three US corporations--Firestar Diamond, Fantasy Inc and A Jaffe--indirectly owned by 50-year-old Modi previously.
Levin had also sought a minimum compensation of USD 15 million for "harm" suffered by the debtors of Nirav Modi and his associates Mihir Bhansali and Ajay Gandhi.

Former Indo-Canadian cabinet minister Amarjeet Sohi has been elected mayor of the city of Edmonton in Canada's Alberta. The 57-year-old had opted out of contesting general elections to focus on winning the mayoral polls.
A former city bus driver, Sohi served in the City Council before he ran for the Liberal Party from the riding of Edmonton Mill Woods in the 2015 national elections.
After narrowly defeating then minister of state Tim Uppal of the Conservative Party, Sohi was appointed a cabinet minister by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Over the next four years, he handled the portfolios of natural resources, and then infrastructure and communities.
