THE Rankings 2024: Oxford University Best in World

As per the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings 2024, the UK's University of Oxford is the highest ranked university in the world with Stanford University taking second place, making it the top ranked university in the US, and in third place is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The top 10 universities in the world are: University of Oxford, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Cambridge, Princeton University, California Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of California, Berkeley and Yale University.
In the top 10 of THE Rankings 2024, seven universities are from the US, while the other three are from the UK.

BITS Pilani, ICWA Ink MoU for Student Internships at Rajya Sabha

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani signed an MoU with the Indian Council of World Affairs. Through this partnership, five BITS Pilani students will be selected for internships at Rajya Sabha. As a part of this partnership, BITS Pilani students will also be given the opportunity to visit Rajya Sabha as guests.
This MoU was announced by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, while he was on a visit to the institute along with Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal.
BITS Pilani is headed by Prof V Ramgopal Rao, who is the Vice Chancellor of the university, and has served as the Director of IIT Delhi from 2016 till 2021.

Ministries of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Sign MoUs with IBM

The Ministries of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship signed 8 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with IBM on digital skilling and skilling in emerging technologies. The collaboration will focus on co-creation of curriculum for skilling learners across school education, higher education and vocational skills on emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, cloud computing and professional development skills.
Union Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan was present at the event.
At school education level, IBM will provide access to digital content from IBM SkillsBuild for high school students, teachers and trainers. They will be identified by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
At the higher education level, IBM will work closely with the Department of Higher Education, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh and state skilling missions. It will provide access to affiliated students and faculty to IBM SkillsBuild. They will get access to digital content, experiential learning and fresh skills enabling them to take on technical careers.

J&K Gets First Space Lab for Government School Students

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir inaugurated its first space lab at Government Higher Secondary School Boys, Kishtwar. The space lab is specially designed for the government school students. The space lab, developed under the ISRO space tutor programme by Vyomika Space Academy was funded by the Directorate of Education Jammu.
The inaugural ceremony was held at Government Higher Secondary School Boys Kishtwar in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar, Devansh Yadav, Chief Education Officer Prehlad Bhagat and I/C Principal of the host school Sandeep Rathore. Students and staff of the school were also present and witnessed this landmark event.
The setting up of the space lab in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar government school represents a significant leap in educational technology.

Delhi Government Launches Mobile App to Address School-related Concerns

The Delhi government launched a mobile application designed to improve the academic journey for both students and teachers. This app aims to empower them by providing a platform to address school-related concerns.
The DoE Nirikshan app is specifically created to empower both students and teachers, enabling them to voice school-related concerns and ensure swift resolution.
The app can be accessed by using student and teacher IDs. It promises to revolutionise the way issues in Delhi government schools are addressed.
The DoE Nirikshan app serves as a dynamic platform for instant communication, enabling users to submit requests concerning various school-related matters to the administration directly.

THE World University Rankings 2024: IISc Bangalore Best among Indian Institutes

The Times Higher Education (THE) announced the World University Rankings 2024 in which as many as 91 Indian institutes secured a place. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore secured the top spot among Indian universities. It was placed between 201-250 rank overall.
IISc Bangalore was followed by Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences. These universities were ranked between 501-600. Meanwhile, several Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) continued its boycott of the rankings for the fourth consecutive year.
The top 10 Indian universities in the rankings are: IISc Bangalore (201-250 rank), Anna University (501-600 rank), Jamia Millia Islamia (501-600 rank), Mahatma Gandhi University (501-600 rank), Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (501-600 rank), Alagappa University (601-800 rank), Aligarh Muslim University (601-800 rank), Banaras Hindu University (601-800 rank), Bharathiar University (601-800 rank) and Indian IIT Guwahati (601-800 rank).

Shalini Bharat Steps Down from the Post of Director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences

Professor Shalini Bharat stepped down from the post of Director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) after completing her term of five years.
The director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, Professor Manoj Tiwari was given additional charge of Director TISS until the new full-time director is appointed.
This new appointment will be the first one through the process following changes to the regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) which brings TISS under the central government's purview of appointments; along with other deemed-to-be-universities receiving over 50 per cent funding from the Centre.

Karnataka Government Forms New Textbooks Revision Committee

The Karnataka government established a committee established to comprehensively revise the curriculum based on the new National Curriculum Framework. In total, 37 experts were appointed to participate in this revision process, as per the order issued by the Under Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy.
The state government appointed Manjunath Hegde, a retired professor from the Rani Channamma University (RCU), as the chief coordinator. It also includes several subject-wise presidents from various universities across Karnataka.
The revisions will be made to first and second-language Kannada textbooks for classes I to X, third-language Kannada textbooks for classes IX and X, and social science textbooks for classes VI to X.
According to the order, the revision will be as per the UPA era's National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 even as the central government has brought out NCF 2023.

Ban on New Engineering Colleges for 2 Years, Control over Student Intake: Karnataka Higher Educat...

In view of growing violations among state private institutions (offering engineering and technical courses), Karnataka Higher Education Minister M. C. Sudhakar in a letter sought All India Council for Technical Education's (AICTE) intervention to curb the 'unscientific' and 'abnormal' increase of seats in such institutions for different engineering courses.
The minister expressed the need for the state government to control the increase of seats in state private institutions (in IT related courses) and decrease of seats (in traditional courses) in engineering/technology by fixing the limit for minimum and maximum seats in a particular course/programme which they can offer. In addition, the minister also sought restrictions or ban on starting new engineering colleges/universities with professional courses mainly in metro/tier 1 cities for the next two-three years.
