Belgian Collects a Treasure Trove of 60,000 Vintage Tin Boxes

  • The colourful tins piled high around Belgian collector Yvette Dardenne used to contain goods ranging from chocolates, toffees, coffee and rice to tobacco, talc and shoe polish, and come from as far away as India.
  • Yvette Dardenne has accumulated almost 60,000 vintage tin boxes from all over the world since starting her collection some 30 years ago.
  • One of Dardenne's greatest treasures is an intricately patterned box from 1868 showing an emblem with two horses on top, built to hold biscuits made by Huntley & Palmers of Reading, England.

World's Earliest-Known Coin Mint and Spade Coin Discovered in China

  • Archaeologists have uncovered 2,640- to 2,550-year-old clay moulds for casting spade coins as well as fragments of finished spade coins at Guanzhuang in Xingyang, Henan province, China. The technical characteristics of the moulds demonstrate that the site — which was part of the Eastern Zhou period (770-220 BCE) bronze foundry — functioned as a mint for producing standardized coins.
  • The origins of metal coinage and the monetization of ancient economies have long been a research focus in both archaeology and economic history.
  • Of these, the hollow-handle spade coin (kongshoubu) minted in China is a likely candidate for the first metal coinage.
  • The spade coin was an imitation of practical metal spades, but its thin blade and small size indicate that it had no utilitarian function.

Silver Coin Found at Keeladi Reveals Economic Activities of Settlement

  • A punch-marked silver coin that was dug out during the seventh phase of excavation at Keeladi has sent a wave of excitement among archaeologists, as they are further able to collate and establish trading activity of the civilisation believed to have flourished on the banks of Vaigai River more than 2,500 years ago.
  • The finding of a single punched-mark silver coin so far is stated to be unique. However, a similar semi-circular silver coin was excavated earlier, during the fourth phase of excavation at Keeladi. The two coins suggest commercial activities belonging to the middle of the 4th century BCE.
  • The designs on the coin, according to Mr. Sivanandam, who is also the Deputy Director, Department of Archaeology, are of the sun, moon, a bull, taurine, and another animal that resembles a dog on one side and a semi-circle with two small geometric L-shaped marks on the obverse.

Ancient Tamil Inscription Found at Temple near Chirala

  • A 14th century Tamil inscription of the Kakatiyas has been found at Motupalli village near Chirala in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Dr. E. Siva Nagireddy, archaeologist and CEO of Pleach India Foundation, said that it was curious that the Kakatiyas, who were ruling the present Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, came out with inscriptions both in Tamil and Telugu. The residents were also mainly Tamil-speaking then.
  • Dr. Nagireddy, along with R. Dasarathareddy Reddy, president of Motupalli Heritage Society, chanced upon the inscription while documenting the historic Kodanda Ramaswamy temple located on the outskirts of Motupalli, an important port of call on the east coast during the medieval period.
