Mansi Kasliwal Becomes 1st Woman to Head Caltech's Palomar Observatory
California Institute of Technology (Caltech) appointed Prof Mansi Manoj Kasliwal as director of Palomar Observatory, making her the first woman and the second PIO to lead the facility. Shrinivas Kulkarni (2006-18) was the first PIO to head the observatory, located atop Palomar Mountain in north San Diego, California.
Palomar Observatory is home to three active research telescopes: the 5.1m Hale Telescope, the 1.2m Samuel Oschin Telescope, and the 1.5m telescope. Research there is conducted by a wide community of astronomers from Caltech and other domestic and international partner institutions.
Kasliwal, a professor of astronomy at Caltech, is internationally recognised for her pioneering work on explosive cosmic events such as supernovae and colliding neutron stars. In 2022, she received New Horizons in Physics Prize for her leadership in electromagnetic follow-ups of cosmic phenomena.
Born in Indore, Kasliwal moved to the US at 15. She earned her bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 2005 and completed her PhD in astronomy at Caltech in 2011. After postdoctoral research at Carnegie Observatories, she returned to Caltech, where she is now a tenured professor.

MP: First Healthcare Centre Inaugurated in Paatalkot for Tribal Communities
In step towards ensuring last-mile delivery of government services, Dr. Rashmi Choudhary, Assistant Commissioner, National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), New Delhi, visited the remote Paatalkot valley in Chhindwara district and inaugurated a much-awaited health care centre for tribal communities in Setpember 2025.
Paatalkot--a deep and mystical valley in the Tamia block--has long been home to Gond and Bharia tribes, classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). For decades, its 12 scattered villages with nearly 4,000 residents remained cut off from basic amenities, forcing villagers to rely on steep trails for movement and to travel long distances for healthcare.
Under central initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana, Dharti Abba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, and Aadi Karmayogi Abhiyan, significant progress made in roads, housing, drinking water, electricity, and education.

Indian Scientists Develops Nanomaterial that Stimulates Brain Cells Without Surgery
A team of Indian researchers pioneered a nanomaterial that can interact with neurons directly, potentially transforming therapies for brain disorders by avoiding invasive techniques.
The team from the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology, shown that graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) can naturally interact with neurons, encouraging them to grow, mature and communicate more effectively.
Existing therapies such as deep brain stimulation require surgical implants, while other approaches rely on magnetic or ultrasound waves, which are either invasive or limited in scope. By contrast, g-C₃N₄ generates tiny electric fields in response to the brain's own signals when placed near nerve cells. These fields trigger calcium channels on neurons, enhancing their growth and strengthening networks.
