Bombay Jayashri Selected for Sangita Kalanidhi Award 2023

  • Renowned Carnatic vocalist and Padma Shri awardee Bombay Jayashri was selected for the Sangita Kalanidhi Award for 2023 by the Music Academy.
  • As per the Music Academy, Jayashri is one of the foremost among today's Carnatic musicians, who initially trained under her parents and later under TR Balamani and violin maestro Lalgudi G Jayaraman. Besides Carnatic music, Jayashri is also trained on the veena, classical dance and Hindustani music.
  • She is known for her melodic and meditative style of singing. She has also been training underprivileged children in music and contributing through her art to social causes.

Hardik Singh and Savita Punia Win Hockey India Men's and Women's Player of Year Awards

  • Midfielder Hardik Singh and goalkeeper Savita Punia were conferred with the men's and women's Indian 'Hockey Player of the Year' awards.
  • Hardik beat his illustrious senior players like Manpreet Singh and Harmanpreet Singh to win the coveted award for 2022 named after hockey legend Balbir Singh senior at the fifth Hockey India Annual Awards.
  • Savita had led India to the FIH Women's Nation's Cup title in December 2022 to book a berth in the Women's Pro League.
  • Both Hardik and Savita received Rs. 25 lakh each, along with a trophy. The total prize money for the wards was in excess of Rs. 2.7 crore.

Bengaluru Honoured with $150,000 Global Award for Tobacco Control Efforts

  • Bengaluru was among five global cities that were recognised for achievements in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries, with the Indian tech city's efforts in tobacco control winning a USD 150,000 award by a leading global initiative supported by the WHO.
  • Bengaluru was honoured with the 2023 Partnership for Healthy Cities Award, along with Montevideo in Uruguay; Mexico City, Mexico; Vancouver, Canada and Athens, Greece, at the inaugural Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit held in London.
  • Founded in 2017, the Partnership for Healthy Cities is a global network comprising 70 cities working together to prevent NCDs and injuries. Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, in partnership with the WHO and Vital Strategies, the initiative enables cities worldwide to deliver a high-impact policy or programmatic intervention to reduce NCDs and injuries in their communities.

Navy Institutes 2 Trophies in Memory of General Rawat

  • To mark the 65th birth anniversary of Gen Bipin Rawat, the first Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces, the Navy instituted two trophies in his memory.
  • The first is the General Bipin Rawat Rolling Trophy for the woman Agniveer trainee standing first in overall order of merit. The trophy is scheduled to be presented by the Chief of the Naval Staff during the passing-out parade of the first batch of the Navy Agniveers on March 28 at the sailors' training centre, INS Chilka.
  • The second is the General Bipin Rawat Rolling Trophy for the 'Most Spirited Officer' undergoing the Naval Higher Command Course at Naval War College, Goa.

Tamil Writer Sivasankari Selected for Saraswati Samman for 2022

  • Tamil writer Sivasankari was selected for Saraswati Samman for the year 2022 for her book Survya Vamsam. It is a book of memoirs in Tamil language and was published in 2019. Saraswati Samman instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation in 1991 is recognized as the most prestigious and the highest literary award in the country. It carries an award money of Rs. 15 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
  • Sivasankari's literary career spans over five decades. She is the author of 36 novels, 48 novellas, 150 short stories, 15 travelogues, seven collections of essays and three biographies, including one on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • The Saraswati Samman is given every year for an outstanding literary work written in any Indian language by an Indian citizen in the last 10 years preceding the specified Samman year. The recipient is chosen by the Chayan Parishad under the chairmanship of former Supreme Court judge Arjan Kumar Sikri that comprises outstanding scholars and writers of the country.

Journalist Dhanya Rajendran to Receive Chameli Devi Jain Award for 2022

  • Dhanya Rajendran of The News Minute was declared the winner of the Chameli Devi Jain Award for an Outstanding Woman Media person for 2022, the Media Foundation announced.
  • Bengaluru-based Rajendran is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of digital news platform The News Minute.
  • A three-member jury comprising Nirmal Pathak, Editor, PTI Bhasha, columnist Nidhi Razdan, and Harish Damodaran, National Rural Affairs and Agriculture Editor, The Indian Express, agreed that Rajendran's work "showed a blend of meticulous reportage and data reflecting not only individual merit, but the pursuit of committed journalism".

RBI Governor Das Gets the 'Governor of the Year' Award for 2023

  • Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das awarded the 'Governor of the Year' award for 2023 by the international publication Central Banking for captaining the financial markets through the turbulent periods of the pandemic and the crippling impact of the Ukraine war.
  • Former governor Raghuram Rajan was the first to be conferred the title back in 2015 from the country.
  • The Central Banking Publications is a financial publisher specialising in public policy and financial markets, with an emphasis on central banks, and international financial institutions.
