Taylor Swift Wins Top Honours at MTV's Video Music Awards

  • Taylor Swift won Best Pop Music Video and Song of the year at MTV's Video Music Awards, two of several trophies she was competing for as the most-nominated artist at the star-studded ceremony.
  • She went into the night with most nominations and left with four wins for 'Best Pop', 'Song of the year', 'Best direction' and 'Video of the year'.
  • Taylor Swift took home the top prize at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards for her "Anti-Hero" music video on a night full of surprises.

Pravin Kumar Wins James Dyson Award (India) 2023

  • Chennai-based engineer Pravin Kumar was deemed as the national winner for India of the James Dyson Award 2023. Kumar was selected for his innovation Mouseware, a movement-based technology designed for people with upper limb disabilities.
  • This technology enables control of smart devices by using the power of head movements, allowing individuals to effortlessly interact with digital devices.
  • The national winner Pravin Kumar received prize money of approximately Rs. 5 Lakh (£5,000) and will also represent India in the International round where final winners will be handpicked by Sir James Dyson.

CSIR Honours 12 Scientists with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for 2022

  • The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) announced the names of the winners of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) awards for 2022, after nearly a year's delay. The list of 12 scientists across seven categories, chosen for the coveted award in the field of science and technology, was released by CSIR.
  • The award honours scientists from seven disciplines of physics, biology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, chemistry and earth sciences.
  • The 12 scientists are:
  • Dr. Ashwini Kumar was honoured with the prize for his contribution to biological sciences.
  • Dr. Maddika Subba Reddy also received the award for her notable achievements in regard to biological sciences.
  • Dr. Akkattu T Biju was honoured for his contribution to the chemical sciences.
  • Dr. Debabrata Maiti was awarded for his research work in the field of chemical sciences.
  • Dr. Vimal Mishra was honoured for his contributions in the fields of earth, atmosphere, ocean and planetary sciences.
  • Dr. Dipti Ranjan Sahoo received the prize for his achievements in engineering.
  • Dr. Rajnish Kumar received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for 2022 for his work in fundamental research in the field of engineering.
  • Dr. Apoorva Khare was honoured for his research work and contribution to mathematics.
  • Dr. Neeraj Kayal was also recognised for his contributions to mathematical sciences.
  • Dr. Dipyaman Ganguli was awarded for his efforts and research for improving the dynamics of medical sciences.
  • Dr. Anindya Das received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for his outstanding inputs towards physical sciences.

Rajnish Kumar Gets Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize

  • An Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) professor Rajnish Kumar received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize. Professor Kumar was awarded for his contributions to fundamental understanding of the nucleation and growth of clathrate hydrates, CO2 sequestration in solid hydrates and methane recovery from marine gas hydrates.
  • The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB) is a science award in India presented annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and physics. It is the most coveted award in multidisciplinary science in India. The award is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar. It was first awarded in 1958.
  • The prize comprises a citation, a plaque, and a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh (US$6,300).

Satyajit Majumdar Honoured with Dr. V. G. Patel Memorial Award 2023

  • Mumbai Professor Satyajit Majumdar, dean of School of Management and Labour Studies from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), received the 'Dr. V. G. Patel Memorial Award-2023 for Entrepreneurship Trainer, Educator and Mentor' for his work in promoting and strengthening entrepreneurship in India. Patel is widely acknowledged as the Father of the Entrepreneurship Movement in India.
  • Majumdar's name was chosen among 400 applicants from 26 states by a jury nominated by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad. Over the last two decades, Majumdar has played an important role in the development of entrepreneurship, especially in the social sector.
  • Award is given to a professional for his/her outstanding performance/contribution in Entrepreneurship Training/Education/Mentoring/Knowledge or Technology Driven Start-Ups.
  • Award consists of a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 100,000.

Peregrine Falcon Image Wins Bird Photo Award

  • Photographer Jack Zhi's dramatic picture of a female peregrine falcon protecting her young, won this year's (2023) Bird Photographer of the Year award.
  • The picture was taken in California and beat more than 20,000 entries to claim the prize.
  • The Young Bird Photographer of the Year award went to German photographer Anton Trexler for his atmospheric picture of a blackbird silhouetted against the moon.

P. V. Satyanarayana Receives Dr. MS Swaminathan Award

  • Dr. P. V. Satyanarayana, Principal Scientist, Agricultural Research Station, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), Ragolu, was awarded the prestigious 8th Dr. MS Swaminathan Award for his contributions in the field of agriculture during the period 2021-2022. The biennial Dr. MS Swaminathan Award, constituted by the Retired Indian Council of Agricultural Research Employees Association (RICAREA) and Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL), includes a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh and a gold medal, was presented to Dr. Satyanarayana at an event at Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), Hyderabad.
  • Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General (DG), ICAR and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) gave away the award in the presence of senior scientists. Some of the notable achievements of Dr. Satyanarayana include the national award as Team Leader for the Best Golden Jubilee AICIP Centre Award in 2015, the Best Scientist Award by the Seedman Association in 2021.
