International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9th August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population. This event also recognises the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection. It was first pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994, marking the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
The 2021 commemoration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples aimed on the theme "Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract."

PM Narendra Modi Chairs UNSC Open Debate on Maritime Security

PM Narendra Modi chaired a UNSC high-level Open Debate on maritime security and became the first Indian Prime Minister to preside over a UN Security Council Open Debate.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was among several other world leaders who participated in the virtual meeting. The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, President of Niger Mohamed Bazoum, President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta, Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh and the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Felix Tshisekedi were some of the other dignitaries who participated in the event.

2nd IEEE International Conference on Range Technology by DRDO

The 2nd Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Scope Technology (ICORT-2021) took place in August 2021. The conference was held by the Institute Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur, a laboratory of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). It was launched by the Department of Defense R & D Secretary-General and DRDO Chair Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy. The event brought together speakers from around the world who presented their technical achievements on multiple themes related to the testing and evaluation of defense systems.

National Handloom Day

August 7 is observed as National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement and to celebrate our country's rich fabrics and colourful weaves. The day is dedicated to raise awareness among the public and to increase the contribution towards the socio-economic development of the weavers. The day was first observed in 2015 by the Government of India.
The first National Handloom Day was organised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai. The main aim of this day is to make people aware of the rich history of Indian handloom as synthetic fabrics have taken over the textile industry in the present era. Hence, the day is observed to celebrate India's rich fabrics and colourful weaves.

Hiroshima Day

August 6, 2021, observed solemnly as Hiroshima Day around the world, will be the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city in the final year of World War II. On this day in 1945, the United States dropped the very first deployed nuclear bomb in the city of Hiroshima, wiping out an estimated 39 per cent of the population, most of who were civilians. Along with the atomic bombing of Nagasaki three days later, these instances remain the only recorded use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict.
The Manhattan Project, commissioned by the US, created two atomic bombs. The first one, called 'The Little Boy' was dropped in the city of Hiroshima while the second one, dubbed 'The Fat Man', was dropped in Nagasaki by the US on August 6 and 9, respectively.

Eighth SCO Meeting of Law & Justice Ministers

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju will be attending the eighth meeting of Ministers of Justice of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on August 6. He will be joined by Minister of State for Law & Justice, Prof. SP Singh Baghel.
In the eighth SCO Meeting of Law & Justice Ministers, member nations will further deliberate on areas of cooperation; the role of COVID-19 laws in the pandemic; providing free legal aid to citizens in accordance with national legislation; the role of the said ministries in countering corruption and other allied areas of cooperation and assistance in legal services. A Joint Statement will be released after the SCO meeting concludes.
The Ministers of (Law and) Justice and senior officials/experts from the India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan will be participating in the Meeting.
