National Mourning Day (Bangladesh)

  • Bangladesh observes August 15 as its National Mourning Day. On this day, founding father of People's Republic of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated along with most of his family members. To mark this day, National Mourning Day is observed across Bangladesh.
  • The day is a public holiday in the country. On this day, the national flag of Bangladesh is lowered to half-mast at all government, semi-government and autonomous offices in the country.
  • Mujibur Rahman was the first President of Bangladesh and later served as Prime Minister of the country from March 1971 until his assassination in August 1975.
  • Mujibur Rahman is considered as the key figure behind Bangladesh Liberation Movement and the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. For this, he is considered as "Jatir Pita" or father of the nation.

LG Manoj Sinha Inaugurates "Bungus Awaam Mela" in J&K

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has inaugurated the Bungus Awaam Mela with grand arrangements for village games, exhilarating local performances, and other activities to celebrate the 75th year of Independence at Bungus valley in Kupwara district. While inaugurating the fair, the Lt Governor paid tributes to the great revolutionary, freedom fighter Khudiram Bose, on his death anniversary. He also remembered countless others who made sacrifices and invaluable contributions towards achieving the Independence of the country.

CEC Inaugurates 11th Annual Meeting of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia ...

  • Chief Election Commissioner of India and current Chairman, FEMBoSA Sushil Chandra accompanied by Election Commissioners Rajeev Kumar and A.C. Pandey, inaugurated the 11th Annual meeting of the Forum of the Election Management Bodies of South Asia (FEMBoSA) for the year 2021. The meeting in Virtual mode was hosted by the Election Commission of Bhutan. Along with India, delegations from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka participated in the day-long meeting.

International Youth Day

  • August 12 of every year is celebrated as the International Youth Day to raise awareness about the cultural and legal issues surrounding the youth. The day was designated as International Youth Day by the United Nations in the year 1999 after the General Assembly endorsed the recommendation by the 'World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth.' Subsequently, it is being celebrated every year to highlight the importance of youth people as the driving force of change in the world.
  • The day is marked with a theme every year as per its relevance to the times. The theme for 2021 is "Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health." It was chosen by the United Nations after these issues were highlighted at ECOSOC Youth Forum (EYF) 2021.

Javelin Throw Day

  • The Athletics Federation of India has decided that javelin throw day will be on 7th August every year in honour of Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. The 23-year-old Neeraj is India's second individual Olympic gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra. Neeraj bagged the gold medal in men's javelin throw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on 7th August 2021.
  • Neeraj has scripted the history at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo when he threw the javelin to a distance of 87.58m to end India's medal drought in athletics at the Olympics. This is India's first-ever gold medal in athletics in the history of the Olympics. AFI's bid to name August 7 as Javelin Throw Day is an attempt to attract more youth towards the sport.

World Biofuel Day

  • August 10 marks the World Biofuel Day, which is dedicated to raise awareness regarding unconventional sources of fuels that could work as alternatives to fossil fuels. Biofuels are renewable, biodegradable, sustainable sources of energy. With the help of biofuels, one can decrease the import dependency on crude oil, and welcome a cleaner setting.
  • August 10 is marked as the World Biofuel day because on August 9, 1893 Sir Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, had run the mechanical engine with Peanut oil for the first time efficiently.
  • The theme for 2021 is "promotion of biofuels for a better environment".
