World Tourism Day

  • World Tourism Day 2022 is observed on 27th September globally. This day is celebrated every year to focus on promoting tourism in various parts of the world. It was initiated by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). It is celebrated to promote tourism and understand its importance. World Tourism Day aims to make people understand the joy of exploring the world. It is an extremely important event.
  • The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) started World Tourism Day in 1979. The celebrations for the same officially began in 1980. It is celebrated on September 27 every year because the date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of UNWTO. In 1997, UNWTO decided that the day would be celebrated in different host countries each year. The initial commemoration of World Tourism Day focused on the promotion of tourism as a whole with a central theme.
  • The theme of World Tourism Day 2022 was 'Rethinking Tourism'. Everyone will focus on understanding the growth of the tourism sector and reviewing and redeveloping tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.

International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

  • International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed on September 26 every year. The devastating impact of the 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings is well known. This apart, over 2000 nuclear tests have been conducted to date; the last one in 2017, by North Korea. Such tests have caused cancers, birth defects and chronic diseases, among other illnesses in people, and severely damaged the natural world.
  • The United Nations' (UN) objective to achieve total nuclear disarmament was underlined in the first resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1946. Nuclear disarmament was made a priority objective in the first Special Session of the UNGA on disarmament in 1978. The nations which possess nuclear weapons include a doctrine of nuclear deterrence in their security policies.
  • To raise public awareness about nuclear weapons, the UNGA, in 2009, declared August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. Then, in December 2013, the UNGA declared September 26 as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons to mark the high-level UNGA meeting on nuclear disarmament on September 26 that year.

World Environmental Health Day

  • The World Environmental Health Day is observed every year on September 26 with an aim to increase awareness about the crucial work done by environmental health workers and encourage people to contribute to the protection of our environment. In the post-COVID times, the importance of the environmental health workforce needs to be highlighted more than ever before.
  • World Environmental Health Day was established by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) on September 26, 2011. Since then, it has been celebrated annually. The IFEH is a body of 44 members and it aims to raise awareness regarding the health of our environment. The IFHE was founded in 1986 in London with a focus on scientific and technical research on environmental health and the exchange of ideas between countries.
  • World Environmental Health Day 2022 was celebrated under the theme 'Strengthening Environmental Health Systems for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals'.

World Pharmacists Day

  • Every year on September 25, pharmacists around the globe celebrate World Pharmacist Day. This day focuses on the role pharmacists play in improving health on a global scale.
  • The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) established World Pharmacist Day in 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey. They chose September 25 because on this day in 1912 the FIP was founded. Each year there is a theme announced for World Pharmacist Day. Those in the industry promote the themes worldwide. These themes help pharmacists put together national campaigns that showcase their work.
  • The World Pharmacist Day 2022 theme was "Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world." The theme aims to emphasize the united effort of global pharmacists to improve the healthcare sector.

Nation Observes Antyodaya Divas 2022

  • Antyodaya Diwas is celebrated annually on 25th September in India. It marks the birth anniversary of Indian leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and is celebrated in his honour to remember his life and legacy. He was one of the most prominent personalities in the history of Indian politics. This year, the Antyodaya Diwas marks the 105th birth anniversary of Upadhyaya. He was the co-founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) and a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) thinker.
  • Antyodaya means uplifting the poorest of the poor, the special day aims at reaching the weakest section of the society. On this day, Upadhyaya is remembered for his contribution to society and politics that he played in the upliftment of the poor.

International Day of Sign Languages

  • The International Day of Sign Languages is observed on September 23 every year. The UN General Assembly decided to commemorate the day as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realisation of the human rights of people who are deaf.
  • According to the UN, the International Day of Sign Languages was first celebrated in the year 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf.
  • The theme for International Day of Sign Languages 2022 was "Sign Languages Unite Us."

World Rose Day

  • World Rose Day is annually celebrated on September 22 in dedication to the welfare of cancer patients. On this day people around the world work towards bringing cheer and hope into the lives of all those people who have been affected by cancer. More importantly, it seeks to remind patients and their caregivers, that they are not alone in this battle against the deadly disease.
  • World Rose Day for the Welfare of Cancer Patients was first observed in honour of 12-year-old Melinda Rose from Canada, who was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer known as Askin's Tumour. The doctors had also given hope on her and said that she has only six weeks more to live but instead of mourning over it she decided to enjoy the last moments of her life with full joy and enthusiasm and like this she on to live for six months until she passed away.
  • She spent her time bringing joy and hope to all the diagnosed people around her. She reached out to all the cancer patients, sharing poems, letters and emails with them, to bring some cheer into their lives. Her kindness and optimism serve as a reminder to us all, that even in the bleakest of all situations, hope is what keeps us going.

World Rhino Day

  • Every year on September 22, World Rhino Day is observed to spread awareness about the different Rhinoceros species and the dangers they face. This day also celebrates all five rhino species namely the Sumatran, Black, Greater One-horned, Javan, and White rhino species.
  • This day aims to spread the importance of protecting these animals, as Rhinoceros have become critically endangered in the wild due to ongoing poaching and habitat loss over many years.
  • The day's announcement was done in 2010 by WWF-South Africa. When Lisa Jane Campbell, the founder of Annamitici and owner of the Chishakwe Ranch in Zimbabwe, teamed up with Rhishja Cota, the event's creative director in 2011 to raise awareness about the need to preserve or protect all five species of rhinos from extinction.
  • World Rhino Day 2022 was observed under the theme- 'Five Rhino Species Forever'.
