International Translation Day

  • Every year International Translation Day is observed on September 30 to honour the work of translators and language professionals across the world. The purpose of this occasion is to keep the translators motivated in continuing the good work.
  • This day came into being after the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution on May 24, 2017. The resolution was signed by eleven countries after recognising the importance of the role of language professionals and September 30 was chosen to pay tribute to them as it also coincides with the feast of the Bible translator, St. Jerome.
  • The theme for International Translation Day 2022 was 'A world without barriers'.

International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

  • The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) is observed on September 29 every year. This day assumes huge importance due to the rising food insecurity across the globe.
  • On December 19 2019, the UN General Assembly designated September 29 as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. The UNGA recognised that the observance of the International Day would contribute significantly in raising awareness about reducing food loss and waste. The Food and Nutrition Organization of the UN (FAO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) collaborate in order to facilitate the observance of this Day.
  • The theme of the 2022 International Day of Food Loss and Waste was 'Stop Food Waste! For People and! Planet'.

World Heart Day

  • World Heart Day which celebrated every year on 29th September was created by World Heart Federation. It was aimed at informing people around the world about cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is a global campaign through which the federation unites people in the fight against the CVD burden as well as inspires and drives international action to encourage heart-healthy living.
  • World Heart Day was first observed in the year 1999 after World Heart Federation collaborated with World Health Organization. The idea of celebrating the day was conceived by Antoni Baye de Luna, who was the former president of World Health Federation.
  • The main aim of celebrating this day is to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, its prevention and the impact it on people across the world. CVD including heart disease and stroke claims 17.9 million lives every year. Given this fact, the day highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. The day is celebrated every year with a theme.
  • The theme for World Heart Day for 2022 is "Use Heart for Every Heart." The theme highlights the goal to bring together people from across the globe to fight against cardiovascular diseases.

World Rabies Day

  • World Rabies Day takes place each year on September 28, the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur who, with the collaboration of his colleagues, developed the first efficacious rabies vaccine. World Rabies Day aims to raise awareness about the impact of rabies on humans and animals, provide information and advice on how to prevent the disease in at-risk communities, and support advocacy for increased efforts in rabies control.
  • The first-ever World Rabies Day campaign took place back in 2007. The campaign began as a partnership between many organizations including the Alliance for Rabies Control, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. This was headlined by the co-sponsorship of the World Health Organization, the World Organisation for Animal Health, and the Pan American Health Organization.
  • According to the World Health Organisation, the theme of World Rabies Day 2022 was 'Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths.' The theme is to emphasize the connection between the environment, people, and animals.

International Day for Universal Access to Information

  • International Day for Universal Access to Information is observed annually on September 28. This day aims to support the idea that everyone has the right to seek, receive, and distribute information. International Day for Universal Access aims to raise awareness regarding the need to expand laws related to information. This is also in accordance with the right to freedom of expression.
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on November 17, 2015, declared that International Day for Universal Access to Information will be observed on September 28, every year. Several organisations and governmental bodies adhered to the declaration by UNESCO. Further, the UN General Assembly also decided to declare September 28 as the International Day for Universal Access of Information (IDUAI).
  • The theme for International Day for Universal Access to Information 2022 was "Artificial Intelligence, e-Governance and Access to Information".

World Tourism Day

  • World Tourism Day 2022 is observed on 27th September globally. This day is celebrated every year to focus on promoting tourism in various parts of the world. It was initiated by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). It is celebrated to promote tourism and understand its importance. World Tourism Day aims to make people understand the joy of exploring the world. It is an extremely important event.
  • The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) started World Tourism Day in 1979. The celebrations for the same officially began in 1980. It is celebrated on September 27 every year because the date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of UNWTO. In 1997, UNWTO decided that the day would be celebrated in different host countries each year. The initial commemoration of World Tourism Day focused on the promotion of tourism as a whole with a central theme.
  • The theme of World Tourism Day 2022 was 'Rethinking Tourism'. Everyone will focus on understanding the growth of the tourism sector and reviewing and redeveloping tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.

International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

  • International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed on September 26 every year. The devastating impact of the 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings is well known. This apart, over 2000 nuclear tests have been conducted to date; the last one in 2017, by North Korea. Such tests have caused cancers, birth defects and chronic diseases, among other illnesses in people, and severely damaged the natural world.
  • The United Nations' (UN) objective to achieve total nuclear disarmament was underlined in the first resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1946. Nuclear disarmament was made a priority objective in the first Special Session of the UNGA on disarmament in 1978. The nations which possess nuclear weapons include a doctrine of nuclear deterrence in their security policies.
  • To raise public awareness about nuclear weapons, the UNGA, in 2009, declared August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. Then, in December 2013, the UNGA declared September 26 as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons to mark the high-level UNGA meeting on nuclear disarmament on September 26 that year.

World Environmental Health Day

  • The World Environmental Health Day is observed every year on September 26 with an aim to increase awareness about the crucial work done by environmental health workers and encourage people to contribute to the protection of our environment. In the post-COVID times, the importance of the environmental health workforce needs to be highlighted more than ever before.
  • World Environmental Health Day was established by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) on September 26, 2011. Since then, it has been celebrated annually. The IFEH is a body of 44 members and it aims to raise awareness regarding the health of our environment. The IFHE was founded in 1986 in London with a focus on scientific and technical research on environmental health and the exchange of ideas between countries.
  • World Environmental Health Day 2022 was celebrated under the theme 'Strengthening Environmental Health Systems for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals'.
