  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India, declared May 11 as National Technology Day in India. This was to commemorate the Pokhran nuclear tests conducted by the Indian Army in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1998. The Council for Technology announced that the country would celebrate National Technology Day annually to commemorate the dynamic achievement.

  • World Lupus Day is commemorated on May 10 worldwide every year to raise awareness among the populace about this serious life-threatening condition. This healthcare event calls for detailed understanding and support for the person who has been affected by this autoimmune disease. On this health day government, non-government organizations, international organizations, communities, and healthcare professionals gather together to work for action to promote understanding of the disease, so that people across the globe can learn more about this debilitating condition and take stringent action to fight it.
  • World Lupus Day was founded in 2004 by Lupus Canada to shed light on the disease, which may have devastating effects on both those who have it and their loved ones. The theme for World Lupus Day 2023 (purple day) was 'Make Lupus Visible'.

Russia Stages the 78th Victory Day Parade at Red Square

  • Russia held the 78th Victory Day parade anniversary on May 9, at Red Square in Moscow to celebrate the historic victory of the Soviet Union in 1945, when they defeated Nazi Germany in World War II, also known as the Great Patriotic War. This year's (2023) parade featured more than 10,000 individuals and 125 pieces of weaponry, which were all showcased by the Russian Defense Minister, Sergey Shoigu.
  • The anniversary was particularly poignant this year (2023) as the country mourns the thousands of soldiers who have lost their lives in the 15-month war in Ukraine, which shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
  • The Soviet Union, officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was a federal socialist state that existed from 1922 to 1991. The USSR was the largest country in the world by land area, spanning over 22 million square kilometers and comprising 15 republics. The Soviet Union was a global superpower and a rival to the United States during the Cold War, with both countries competing for global influence and dominance. However, the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and its republics became independent states, including the Russian Federation.

  • Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2023 is a significant occasion that is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. He was a legendary poet, writer, philosopher, and social reformer who played a vital role in shaping the cultural and literary heritage of India. Born on May 7, 1861, in Calcutta, Rabindranath Tagore is widely regarded as one of the greatest literary figures in the world.

World Thalassaemia Day

  • World Thalassaemia Day 2023 is observed on May 8 annually.
  • Thalassaemia is an inherited disorder where the oxygen-carrying proteins in the blood – also known as haemoglobin – and red blood cells are lesser than normal.
  • Panos Englezos, President and founder of Thalassemia International Federation created this day in 1994 in the memory of his son George and other Thalassemia patients who fought the disease bravely. Since then, every year, World Thalassemia Day is observed on May 8.
  • Thalassemia International Federation designates a new theme for World Thalassemia Day every year. The theme for World Thalassemia Day 2023 was "Be Aware. Share. Care: Strengthening Education to Bridge the Thalassaemia Care Gap."

World Red Cross Day

  • Red Cross Day, also known as Red Crescent Day, is celebrated annually on May 8, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, born on May 8, 1828. This day is a yearly celebration of the principles of the Red Cross Society, which operates in numerous countries.
  • World Red Cross Day has its roots in World War I, where the notion of an annual commemoration to honour those who contributed to global peace was initially suggested. The Tokyo conference in 1936 approved the proposal named the "Red Cross Truce," but the League of Red Cross Societies (LRCS) postponed it until after World War II in 1946. The first-ever Red Cross Day was eventually observed on May 8, 1948.

World Laughter Day

  • World Laughter Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May every year (in 2023 on May 7) to spread happiness in the whole world. Every year more than 70 countries around the world celebrate World Laughter Day on the first Sunday of May.
  • World Laughter Day was first celebrated on May 10, 1998, in Mumbai, India. The day was arranged by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement.
