International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

  • International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is celebrated on June 26. According to the United Nations, torture exists in all parts of the world, despite the total ban under international law. According to all relevant instruments, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
  • The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment generally known as the Torture Agreement, entered into force on June 26, 1987. This was a step towards recognising that torture is universally banned. Ten years later, on June 26, 1997, the United Nations General Assembly formally designated the day as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture in order to help survivors and raise awareness about its effects.
  • The primary goal of this day is to completely abolish this inhuman act in all its forms. On June 26, 1998, the United Nations called for all governments, stakeholders, and members of global society to take action against perpetrators across the globe.

Day of the Seafarer

  • The Day of the Seafarer is a special day dedicated to all those who work closely with salt water, including Coast Guards, Navies, fishermen, marine biologists, and cruise ship captains. It commemorates the first recorded sea voyage around 3200 BCE, which was sponsored by the Egyptian Pharaoh Snefru, known for building several pyramids. This annual event, observed on June 25, aims to acknowledge the crucial role played by seafarers in international trade, the global economy, and society as a whole. Furthermore, it emphasizes their significant efforts in safeguarding the marine environment.
  • The Day of the Seafarer was established through a resolution passed during the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila, where the revised STCW Convention was adopted. This day, observed on June 25, aims to acknowledge and appreciate the exceptional contribution made by seafarers worldwide to international maritime trade, the global economy, and society as a whole. The resolution encourages governments, shipping organizations, companies, ship-owners, and other relevant parties to actively promote and appropriately celebrate this significant day. The United Nations recognizes the Day of the Seafarer as an official observance day.

UN Public Service Day

  • Every year, the UN Public Service Day commemorates the immeasurable value and noble nature of public service. Commemorated on June 23, this special occasion aims to shine a spotlight on the vital role played by public servants. It is also a day to reflect on how they are instrumental in driving development and progress. It also seeks to honour the commendable work of these dedicated individuals and inspire the younger generation to embark on meaningful careers within the public sector. Since its inaugural Awards Ceremony in 2003, the United Nations has experienced a remarkable surge in submissions from across the globe.
  • On December 20, 2002, the General Assembly of the United Nations officially designated June 23 as Public Service Day through the adoption of resolution 57/277. In order to enhance the recognition of this important day and highlight the significance of public service, the United Nations launched the UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) program in 2003. In 2016, the program underwent a review to align its objectives with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • There is no specific theme chosen for United Nations Public Service Day 2023. The day revolves around the value and virtue of public service to the community.

International Widows Day

  • International Widows Day is observed annually on June 23 to raise awareness about the plight of widows worldwide. International Widows Day aims to recognise the struggles of widows globally and to promote the importance of supporting and empowering them.
  • International Widows Day was celebrated in 2005 for the first time by an NGO named Loomba Foundation. The main aim of starting this day was to empower widows globally. However, the United Nations officially declared International Widows Day on December 21, 2010.
  • Every year, the United Nations announces a new theme for International Widows Day to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by widows all across the world. The theme for International Widows Day 2023 was 'Innovation and Technology for gender equality'.

International Olympic Day

  • International Olympic Day is observed on June 23 worldwide every year. This day commemorates the foundation of the International Olympic Committee on June 23 1894 in Sorbonne, Paris. In 1948, the International Olympic Committee approved the proposal of celebrating International Olympic Day annually.
  • The purpose of this day is to emphasize the power of sports in bringing people together and creating harmony.
  • The theme of International Olympic Day 2023 is 'Let's Move' which aims to inspire people around the world to make time for daily physical activity.

World Rainforest Day

  • World Rainforest Day is observed on June 22 every year across the world. This day is set aside to raise awareness about rainforests and also about all the biotic species that live in them. World Rainforest Day aims to encourage people to learn more about rainforests and join efforts to protect and preserve these forests for generations to come. Rainforests have been disappearing and taking the rich diversity of flora and fauna with them because of increasing deforestation and climate change. World Rainforest Day was instituted to halt this disappearance by reminding people of the importance of rainforests.
  • The roots of World Rainforest Day can be traced back to 2017 when the Rainforest Partnership, a non-profit environmental organization based in Austin, Texas, launched the global event. This initiative was aimed at raising awareness about the importance of rainforests and their invaluable contributions to the planet.
  • Over the years, World Rainforest Day has gained support from more than 70 global partners, including environmental advocates and media outlets. It has become an annual event held on June 22nd, endorsed by diverse organizations striving for positive action in preserving rainforests. The Rainforest Partnership is an affiliated member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, further amplifying its mission.
  • The theme for World Rainforest Day 2023 was 'Preserving the lungs of the earth'.

World Hydrography Day

  • World Hydrography Day, a significant occasion officially recognised and implemented by the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO), is marked annually on June 21. This day holds great importance as it serves as a platform to highlight the crucial work carried out by hydrographers worldwide and to promote the significance of hydrography itself. Through various activities and events organized on this day, the IHO aims to increase public awareness and understanding of hydrography's role in ensuring safe and efficient navigation, sustainable marine resource management, and coastal zone development.
  • The International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) was established in 1921, serving as a prominent entity focused on addressing various aspects of marine life. Headquartered in Monaco, the organization played a crucial role in advocating navigation-related concerns, setting technical standards, and protecting marine environments, engaging directly with governments.
  • The organization presented its idea to the United Nations General Assembly, which approved and welcomed the initiative. The UNGA later adopted it as a resolution, and since then, World Hydrography Day is observed annually on June 21, coinciding with the IHO's anniversary.
  • Each year, World Hydrography Day focuses on a specific theme. World Hydrography Day 2023 theme was 'Hydrography - underpinning the digital twin of the ocean'.

International Yoga Day

  •  International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21st to promote the numerous benefits of practicing yoga. The chosen date coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the holistic approach to well-being that yoga offers.
  • In its 9th edition, this year's (2023) International Day of Yoga was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UN Headquarters on June 21. This marked the first time a yoga session was conducted by the Prime Minister at this location.
  • During his speech at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi put forward the concept of a dedicated yoga day. On December 11, 2014, all 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously agreed to observe the International Day of Yoga on June 21. The inaugural celebration occurred on June 21, 2015. Since then, International Yoga Day has become a global phenomenon, and it is now celebrated in over 190 countries.
  • The theme for International Day of Yoga 2023 is 'Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', which represents our shared desire for 'One Earth, One Family, One Future'.
