Vivo Back as IPL Title Sponsor

  • Chinese smartphone company Vivo is back as the title sponsor of the Indian Premium League cricket tournament, almost a year after the sponsorship deal with the BCCI was suspended.
  • Vivo's sponsorship deal with the BCCI, worth Rs. 440 crore per year, was suspended last season due to the India-China border stand off. Vivo had won the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years from 2018 to 2022 for a reported sum of Rs. 2,190 crore. It will now be the title sponsor till 2023.
  • Dream11 had been the IPL title sponsors for the 2020 edition, winning the rights for Rs. 222 crore.

Roger Federer Returns to Court after 14 Months

  • Roger Federer admitted he felt tired at times as he returned from 14 months out to beat Dan Evans at the Qatar Open but will not be changing his post-match routine.
  • The 39-year-old Swiss, who had not played since losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2020 Australian Open semi-finals since when he has had two knee operations, produced some vintage tennis to win 7-6(8), 3-6, 7-5.

Ishant Sharma Third Indian Pacer to Take 300 Test Wickets

  • Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma became the sixth Indian and third pacer from the country to take 300 wickets in Test cricket. The 32-year-old Ishant reached the milestone in 98 matches, more than the other Indian bowlers in the club. Ishant reached the landmark when he trapped Dan Lawrence with a delivery that swung back sharply before hitting his pads in England's second innings on the fourth day of the opening Test.
  • Besides Anil Kumble (619) and Kapil Dev (434), Ravichandran Ashwin (377 before this game), Harbhajan Singh (417), and Zaheer Khan (311) are the other bowlers from the country who have reached the landmark.

Ashwin ICC Player for February 2021

  • India's premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was named the ICC men's Player of the Month (February 2021) for his stellar show against England in a four-match Test series at home which his side won 3-1.
  • England's Tammy Beaumont was adjudged the women's Player of the Month.
  • In the three tests he played, Ashwin scored a 106 in the second innings of India's second Test victory over England at Chennai and took his 400th Test wicket in the third Test victory at Ahmedabad.
  • Scoring a total of 176 runs across these games and taking 24 wickets, Ashwin was the unanimous choice to win in the men's category for February and garnered the most votes in the fan vote.

Myntra Extends Association with Chennai Super Kings

  • Fashion e-commerce platform Myntra has extended its partnership with IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by another year. The company, associated with CSK since last year, has taken a more premium spot on the team jersey as the official fashion partner for the 2021 edition of the tournament. Myntra's logo will now feature on the front centre of the CSK team's jersey.
  • Myntra will launch a 360-degree marketing campaign in a key market. As part of the collaboration, at least three-star players will be involved in various promotional activities that are aimed at engaging with a collective audience.
  • Myntra and CSK will also work together to create digital content across social media. As part of this, Myntra will enjoy a significant share of voice with multiple on-ground visibility features such as perimeter boards, LED walls, toss mats, among others during all CSK home games.

India to Face New Zealand in World Test Championship Final at Lord's

  • Virat Kohli-led Team India booked a spot in the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) after they defeated England by an innings and 25 runs in the 4th Test at Motera in Ahmedabad. After taking a lead of 160 runs, India bowled out the Joe Root-led side for 135 to seal a thumping victory and sealed the series 3-1.
  • Now, India will face Kane Williamson's New Zealand in the WTC final which will take place at Lord's between June 18-June 22.

PV Sindhu Suffers Crushing Defeat in Swiss Open Final

  • World champion PV Sindhu finished a distant second in the Swiss Open final after being completely routed by Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain in a lop-sided women's singles title clash. The 25-year-old Indian, who had won the coveted World Championship gold medal here in 2019, couldn't match the speed and accuracy of top seed Marin during her 12-21, 5-21 defeat in the final that lasted only 35 minutes.
  • It was Sindhu's third successive loss to Marin, who had won both the Super 1000 events in Thailand in January before finishing runners-up at the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals.

Bachendri Pal to Lead All Women Team Aged above 50 in a 5 Month Long Himalayan Expedition

  • The first Indian woman to conquer world's highest summit Mount Everest, Bachendri Pal will lead a 10-member team of women aged above 50 in a five-month long expedition from eastern to western Himalaya beginning in May.
  • The 'FIT@50 Women's Trans Himalayan Expedition '21' will start in the first week of May from Arunachal Pradesh and cover around 4,500 kilometres across about 40 mountain passes including the 17,320 feet Lamkhaga Pass, considered one of the toughest.
  • Organised by the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports under the FIT India banner, the expedition is slated to conclude in the Karakoram Range of Jammu and Kashmir in the second week of October.

IPL 2021 to Begin on April 9

  • The 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) will start on April 9 and the final will be held on May 30, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said. Defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chennai in the tournament opener.
  • The matches will be played in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
  • After nearly two years, the IPL extravaganza will return home with Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata hosting the marquee event.
  • The IPL 2021 final will be played on May 30 at Narendra Modi Stadium, popularly known as Motera Stadium, in Ahmedabad. Playoffs will also be played at Motera Stadium.

Bajrang Punia Wins Gold at Rome Ranking Series

  • Bajrang Punia won the gold medal in the final of the men's 65 kg event at the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series in Rome.
  • Bajrang defeated Mongolia's Tulga Tumur Ochir 2-2 by criteria in the final of the freestyle event. The 27-year-old grappler secured a hard-fought win over the Mongolia wrestler.
  • This was Bajrang's second consecutive gold medal at the ranking series after he had won the yellow metal last year after defeating Jordan Oliver of the USA.
  • Earlier, ace Indian wrestler, Vinesh Phogat grabbed the 53 kg gold medal along with the World Number one rank.
