Durand Cup to be Held in Kolkata

  • World's third oldest and Asia's oldest football tournament called Durand Cup, is all set to be held in Kolkata from September 5 to October 21, 2021.
  • Durand Cup will be held after a year due to Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Tournament will be organised with the support of All India Football Federation (AIFF), IFA (West Bengal) and Government of West Bengal.
  • Year 2021 will mark the 130th Edition of Durand Cup.
  • The Durand Cup is the prestigious football tournament. It was first held in 1888, at Dagshai in Himachal Pradesh. This tournament has been named after Mortimer Durand.

Lionel Messi to Join Paris Saint-Germain

  • Lionel Messi is set to sign for Paris Saint-Germain.
  • The Argentina star has agreed a two-year deal with the option for a further season.
  • Messi is set to earn around 35 million euros (41 million USD) net annually.
  • Funded for a decade by Qatari sovereign wealth, PSG is one of the few clubs in the world that could finance the signing that links Messi up with Brazil forward Neymar and France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe.

WFI Suspends Wrestler Vinesh Phogat

  • The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has handed a temporary suspension to grappler Vinesh Phogat over her behaviour at the Tokyo Olympics and also issued notice to young Sonam Malik for misconduct.
  • The grappler had travelled to Tokyo from Hungary where she was training with coach Woller Akos. Upon arriving, she refused to stay at the Games Village and train with the other Indian team members. She also did not wear the name of the official sponsors of the Indian contingent, Shiv Naresh, and chose to wear a Nike singlet during her bouts.

ICC Announces its Big Push for Cricket's Inclusion in 2028 Olympics

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed its intention to bid for cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
  • The ICC has been making the case for cricket's inclusion for a while and the bid will also have the backing from the world's richest board BCCI as made clear by secretary Jay Shah.
  • Fearing loss of its autonomy and interference from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the BCCI was not very enthusiastic about cricket's inclusion in the Summer Games earlier but now Shah has assured India's participation at the world's biggest sporting extravaganza if the ICC manages to secure its entry.
  • The ICC has also formed an Olympic Working Group which will work on making the game part of the Olympics starting from 2028.

Indian Football Team's Camp to return to Kolkata

  • The national football team's camp will be held in Kolkata after 15 years when initial 23 probables assemble at the 'City of Joy' to prepare for next month's international friendlies.
  • The training sessions will start from August 16.
  • This will be the first time Blue Tigers' camp will be held in Kolkata as they assembled for training way back in 2006 ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Saudi Arabia.
  • National team head coach Igor Stimac has named an initial list of 23 probables, leaving out players from ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC owing to the two club's commitments in the AFC Cup in the Maldives.

Lionel Messi Confirms He is Leaving Barcelona

  • A tearful Lionel Messi confirmed he was leaving FC Barcelona after the club said that it could no longer afford paying the Argentine's high wages, adding he was in negotiations with French club Paris St Germain over a possible move.
  • Messi, who has been at the club for 21 years, becoming its all-time goal scorer with 682, broke down in tears before giving a speech.

Neeraj Chopra Becomes 2nd Indian Individual Gold Medallist

  • Neeraj Chopra scripted history after winning a gold medal in Javelin throw. His first throw of 87.58 m was enough for him to earn a gold medal in javelin throw final. Chopra became the first ever Indian athlete to win an Olympic title in athletics.
  • Neeraj Chopra became only the second Indian to win an individual gold in the Olympics, out-performing the field by some distance to immortalise himself as the first track-and-field Games medal-winner for the country.
  • The 23-year-old son of a farmer from Khandra village near Panipat in Haryana produced a second round throw of 87.58 m in the final to stun the athletics world and end India's 100-year wait for a track and field medal in the Olympics.
  • His was the country's seventh medal and first gold in this Olympics and he joined shooter Abhinav Bindra (2008 Beijing Games) in an elite and very hard-to-reach club of India's individual gold winners in the showpiece.
  • With this, the country surpassed the previous best haul of six medals achieved in the 2012 London Games. Apart from Chopra's gold, India has won to silver and four bronze medals.

Tokyo Olympics: India End Campaign with Best-ever Tally of 7

  • The Tokyo Olympics started with a bang for India with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu becoming the second individual silver medallist at the Games from the country. It then went through a lull as the shooters and archers failed to live up to expectations before a wave of positivity came back with the performances of the men's and women's hockey teams and PV Sindhu's bronze medal victory, all of which came to a crescendo with Neeraj Chopra winning a historic javelin throw gold.
  • India ended up surpassing their previous best tally at an Olympics of six medals, which the contingent achieved at the 2012 London Olympics, with Neeraj's gold being their seventh medal. It came in the last event of the Tokyo Games that featured an Indian.
  • India medals tally was 7 with 1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals.

US Women's Basketball Claims 7th Straight Gold at Olympics

  • Team USA extended a historic run of championships in Olympic women's basketball, winning the gold against home team Japan in their first-ever medal match.
  • The United States' women earned their seventh-straight gold in the 90-75 victory. Brittney Griner, who plays for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, led Team USA with 30 points.
  • "Seven in a row, that's pretty amazing," Griner said, cradling her newly won medal, her second after claiming gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Fireworks Display Marks the Official Close of Tokyo Olympic Games

  • Held amid the unrelenting COVID-19 pandemic, the 32nd Olympic Games began drawing to an end with a closing ceremony that sought to give the message of moving forward.
  • The ceremony opened with a video that looked back on the 17 days of events and competition.
  • Fireworks went off at the stadium to mark the beginning of the final chapter in which the organisers "expressed gratitude for the countless individuals who lent us their strength and helped us make it to the Closing Ceremony."
  • This was followed by Japan's Crown Prince Akishino and the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach's appearance in the official stand.
