Manisha Kalyan, Sunil Chhetri Named AIFF Footballers of the Year 2021-22

  • Indian men's national football team skipper Sunil Chhetri and women's team midfielder Manisha Kalyan were chosen as the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) footballers of the year for the 2021-22 season.
  • Chhetri and Manisha were nominated for the award by their respective national coaches, Igor Stimac and Thomas Dennerby.
  • Chhetri scored four goals from as many appearances for the national team this year, raising his international goals tally to 84 - only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi among active footballers. This is the seventh time Chhetri was named the men's footballer of the year and the first since 2018.
  • The AIFF also announced Martina Thokchom and Vikram Partap Singh as the emerging players for the season.

Bhavani Devi Bags Gold at Commonwealth Fencing Senior Women's Championship

  • Indian ace fencer Bhavani Devi won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2022 in the Senior Women's Sabre Individual category.
  • She defeated Veronika Vasileva of Australia 15-10 to win the title in London, the UK.
  • Bhavani Devi scripted history by becoming the lone Indian fencer to qualify for Tokyo Olympics after she reached the quarter-final of the 2020 Fencing World Cup in Hungary. She qualified through the adjusted Official Ranking Method (AOR).

44th Chess Olympiad ends; India's Men & Women Team Win Bronze Medal

  • The 44th Chess Olympiad inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai on the 28th of July ended. India competed in the tournament with three teams in the Men's Section and three teams in the Women's section.
  • India 'B' team comprising D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Raunak Sadhwaniand and Adhiban won the bronze medal beating Germany.
  • In women's section, India 'A' team won the bronze medal. The team comprising Vaishali and Koneru Humphy, Tania Sachdev and Bhakti Kulkari were headed for a gold medal on the final day but a defeat to USA by 1-3 dented their chances as they eventually finished third.
  • The Uzbekistan team, which was seeded 14th in the tournament, won the gold medal in the men's section. Armenia clinched the silver medal.
  • It was the first time that the Chess Olympiad was held in India.

Uzbekistan to Host 2026 Chess Olympiad

  • According to the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Uzbekistan will host the 2026 Chess Olympiad. In Chennai's ongoing Chess Olympiad, their young team is now in the lead. Teams from around the world compete in the Chess Olympiad, a biennial chess competition. The event is organised by FIDE, which also chooses the host nation. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE hosted an online chess tournament in 2020 and 2021 with a quick time limit that harmed competitors' online ratings.
  • Each chess association recognised by FIDE is permitted to enter a team into the Olympiad.
  • Up to five players can make up a team: four active players and one reserve. Each team used to play every other team at first, but as the event developed over time, this became impossible.

Prabath Jayasuriya and Emma Lamb are ICC Players of the Month for July

  • Sri Lanka spin sensation Prabath Jayasuriya and England women's cricket team's emerging all-rounder Emma Lamb were voted ICC 'Player of the Month for July.
  • Jayasuriya faced off competition from England's in-form batter and June's Player of the Month winner Jonny Bairstow and French youngster Gustav McKeon to claim the honour. Jayasuriya, who made his Test debut in Sri Lanka's final Test match against Australia in Galle earlier in July, picked up 12 wickets and guided the Lankans to a series-leveling victory.
  • Lamb beat compatriot Nat Sciver and India pacer Renuka Singh to win the award.

Manoj Prabhakar is Nepal Cricket Coach

  • Former India all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar was appointed head coach of the Nepal cricket team.
  • Prabhakar succeeded Pubudu Dassanayake, who stepped down from the position in July to take up head coach's role with Canada.
  • Prabhakar, who featured in 39 Tests and 130 ODIs for India between 1984 to 1996, has previously coached Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh Ranji teams.
  • He also served as the bowling coach for the Afghanistan national team in 2016.

Sharath Kamal, Nikhat Zareen India's Flagbearers for CWG Closing Ceremony

  • Star paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal and world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen were named India's flagbearers for the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.
  • Sharath had a rich haul of four medals in this edition of the Games.
  • Zareen, on the other hand, won the gold medal in the light flyweight event (50kg).
  • The final decision was made considering the fact that the wrestling and weightlifting teams have already left for India.

Commonwealth Games 2022: India Finish 4th with 61 Medals

  • India finished 4th on the podium at the Commonwealth Games 2022 with an overall medal tally of 61, including 22 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze. The Birmingham Games is India's fourth-best performance at the CWG in terms of gold medals won tied with the 2006 Manchester Games.
  • India's best-ever showing at the Commonwealth Games came at home in 2010 when the Asian giants won 101 medals, including 38 Gold. In terms of overall medals won, Birmingham 2022 is 5th best showing after New Delhi (101), Manchester 2002 (69), Gold Coast 2018 (66), and Glasgow 2014 (64).
  • In Birmingham India finished behind Australia 178 (67 gold), England 176 (57 gold), Canada 92 (26 gold).

P. V. Sindhu Bags Maiden Commonwealth Singles Gold

  • India's sporting icon P. V. Sindhu added a Commonwealth Singles gold to her wide array of medals with a convincing straight-game win over Canada's Michelle Li in the final.
  • The world number seven from India outplayed her 13th ranked opponent 21-15 , 21-13.

V. Pranav Becomes India's 75th Grandmaster

  • Chess prodigy V. Pranav became India's 75th Grandmaster by winning a tournament in Romania.
  • The Chennai-based Pranav won the Limpedea Open in Baia Mare, Romania to secure his third and final GM norm and attain the Grandmaster title. He finished the tournament with 7 points from nine rounds to wrap the GM norm requirements.
  • The 15-year-old had obtained his maiden GM norm at the Serbia Open in 2021 and the second in the Vezerkepzo GM round-robin tourney in Budapest, Hungary.

India Beat Bangladesh 5-2 to Lift SAFF Under-20 Football Championship Trophy

  • India lifted the SAFF U-20 football championship trophy by defeating Bangladesh 5-2 goals in the final at Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Four goals from Gurkirat Singh and a lone goal from Himanshu Jhangra ensured Indian Team a worthy comeback in the final match which had gone to extra-time. India won this championship for the second consecutive time.

Vishwanathan Anand Elected FIDE Deputy President

  • Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand was elected deputy president of FIDE, the sport's world governing body, while incumbent president Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected for a second term.
  • Five-time world champion Anand was part of Dvorkovich's team.
  • Dvorkovich received 157 votes as against 16 by his rival Andrii Baryshpolets while the number of invalid votes was 1 and abstentions stood at 5.
  • The elections to the world chess body were held during the FIDE Congress alongside the 44th Chess Olympiad.

India Wins Silver after Losing to Australia in 1st Commonwealth Women's Cricket Final

  • The Indian women's cricket team won the silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led met Australia in the gold medal match in Birmingham but went down by 9 runs. Chasing 162 in 20 overs, India had lost openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma early but skipper Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the ship for the side and chipped in with a 96-run stand for the third wicket.

Javelin Thrower Annu Rani Wins Bronze; First Indian Female to win Medal in the Sport

  • Annu Rani scripted history as she became the first Indian female javelin thrower to win a medal, a bronze, in the Commonwealth Games.
  • Rani sent the spear to a distance of 60m in her fourth attempt to finish third.
  • World champion Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia stole the gold with a final round throw of 64.43m from compatriot Mackenzie Little (64.27m) who was leading at the end of the penultimate round.
  • Before Rani, Kashinath Naik and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra had won a bronze and a gold in the men's javelin throw respectively.

Sakshi Malik, Deepak Punia Win Gold in Wrestling at CWG 2022

  • The Indian wrestling contingent performed exceptionally. It won six medals which included three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. The Indian women's hockey team though lost controversially in the semi-final against Australia. The Indian team was done in by the time-keeper in the penalty shoot-out as after the first save from Savita Punia, it was decided that the time clock was not running and Australia was given a re-shoot.
  • Bajrang Punia and Deepak Punia faced no problems at all as they raced their way to the gold in their respective categories of Men's 65 kg and 86 kg freestyle. Sakshi Malik played a tremendous game as she fought back from being 0-4 down to go 4-4 all and then win by pinfall against her Canadian opponent.
  • Apart from these three gold medals, India also won a silver courtesy of Anshu Malik who put in a great fight in the final against the Nigerian Commonwealth Champion, losing 4-6. Mohit Grewwal and Divya Kakran won bronze medals.
