PCA Renames Stands at Mohali Stadium after Home Grown Stars Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh

  • Cricket is set to return to the IS Bindra PCA International Stadium at Mohali on September 20, with the Punjab Cricket Association adding to the cheer by giving fans the option of witnessing the action up close and personal from stands renamed after two local legends of the game — Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh.
  • The Punjab Cricket Association renamed its famous Terrace Block after former Indian spinner and current Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh — who has represented India in 103 Test, 236 ODI and 28 T20I and picked up a total of 711 wickets in all the three formats. The North Pavilion of the stadium, similarly, has been named after Yuvraj Singh, who played in 40 Test, 304 ODI and 58 T20I matches for India and scored 11,778 runs, besides claiming 148 wickets in all three formats.

61st Edition of Subroto Cup International Football Tournament

  • The 61st edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament began after a gap of two years, at the BR Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi marking the start of the most prestigious football tournament for schools all over the country. The tournament, organised by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society (SMSES) along with the Indian Air Force, kicked-off the first match in the Under-14 Boys category between National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Govt. Model HSS, Sector 36, Chandigarh which finished in a goalless draw.
  • A total of 92 schools representing 25 States and Union Territories of India have qualified across the three (U-14 Boys, U-17 Girls, U-17 Boys) categories and Air Force School, Bangladesh will also be competing in the tournament.

Suresh Raina Announces Retirement from all Forms of Cricket

  • Suresh Raina announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, including the Indian Premier League. Raina, who was an integral part of four-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings, went unsold in the auction earlier in 2022.
  • The left-handed batter was a permanent fixture in the Indian team for many years and was part of the 2011 World Cup winning side as well. Raina has represented India in all three formats of the game, but his contributions to white-ball cricket stand out.
  • In 226 ODI matches for the nation, the left-handed batter scored 5615 runs at an average of 35.31 with his highest score being 116 not out. When it comes to T20Is, Raina played 78 matches and scored 1065 runs. He was also the first Indian player to score a century in the shortest format of the game.
  • Raina had retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020 - the same day when MS Dhoni announced his retirement as an India cricketer.

HM Amit Shah Launches Mascot & Anthem for 36th National Games in Ahmedabad

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the mascot and the anthem for the 36th National Games at Trans Stadia in Ahmedabad. The mascot is named 'Savaj' which means cub in Gujarati. The anthem for the national games is based on the theme of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat'. The National Games are going to be organized from 29th September 2022 to 12th October 2022. It will be played in six cities of Gujarat including, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar.
  • The Government of India has left no stone unturned to promote sports and sports persons in India. The budget allocated for the National Games 2014 was 866 crores, this year, the allocated budget for National Games 2022, it is increased to two thousand crores. Home Minister Amit Shah also launched the official website and mobile app of the National Games Gujarat at the raiser ceremony.

Anishka Biyani Wins Gold in Malaysian Age Group Rapid Chess Championship

  • Six-year-old Anishka Biyani won the gold medal in the Malaysian Age Group Rapid Chess Championship at Kuala Lumpur.
  • Anishka, a first-grade student of Dhirubhai Ambani School, achieved the feat in the under-6 open category with an impressive score of four points out of a possible six to clinch the title in the girls' category.
  • Participants from as many as eight countries took part in the competition. Earlier this year, Anishka had also qualified as one of the best under-7 players in the All India FIDE rating chess tournament held in Yousufguda, Hyderabad.

Mastercard Acquires BCCI Title Sponsorship Rights for all Home Matches

  • Mastercard announced its collaboration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to broaden its strategic outreach to Indian audiences.
  • During this association, Mastercard will be the title sponsor for all international matches (both women and men) held on home ground, domestic cricket matches like Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Ranji Trophy organized by the BCCI as also all junior cricket (Under 19 and Under 23) matches held in India.

Leh in Ladakh All Set to Host First-Ever Mountain Bicycle World Cup

  • Leh is all set to host the first-ever Mountain Bicycle, MTB, World Cup- the 'UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup in India. The 'UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup' will be organized in collaboration with the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh and the Cycling Association of India. The Ladakh leg of the Eliminator World Cup is part of ten professional race series held in various cities across the world.
  • UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup is going to be a short track race with Cross Country Eliminator, XCE, the format of five hundred meters with natural and artificial obstacles. In this upcoming event, a total of 20 international, 55 national, and local cyclists are going to participate. Since the UCI MTB Eliminator World Cup is going to be held for the first time in India, all cyclists are excited about the event.

Brian Lara Appointed Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad

  • West Indies batting legend Brian Lara was appointed as the new head coach of 2016 IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad. Lara, who was the strategic advisor and batting coach of the Sunrisers in the 2022 IPL season, succeeded Tom Moody for the top position in the upcoming seasons of the tournament.
  • Moody's first stint as the head coach of the Sunrisers ran from 2013 to 2019. Under him, Hyderabad reached the playoffs five times and won the IPL for the first time in 2016. In 2020, Moody was replaced by fellow Australian Trevor Bayliss as head coach in 2020.
  • But in 2021, Moody returned to the franchise.

AIFF Gets its First Player President- Kalyan Chaubey

  • Kalyan Chaubey defeated Bhaichung Bhutia to become the All India Football Federation (AIFF) president.
  • Chaubey, a former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal goalkeeper won 33-1 against former captain, Bhutia. This is the first time in the history of the Federation that a former player has become its president.
  • N A Haris, a sitting Congress MLA and the president of the Karnataka Football Association won the vice president post defeating Manvendra Singh of Rajasthan FA. While, Kipa Ajay beat Gopalakrishna Kosaraju for the treasurer's post.
  • Later, the AIFF Executive Committee unanimously appointed Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran as the new AIFF Secretary General.

Pallathuruthy Boat Club Wins 68th Edition of Nehru Trophy Boat Race

  • Pallathuruthy boat club won the 68th edition of Nehru Trophy for a boat race held on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha district of Kerala.
  • In the boat race, 'Mahadevikkadu Kattil Thekkethil' by Pallathuruthy boat club won the trophy while NCDC Boat club's 'Nadubhagam' of Kumarakam won the title of runner's up.
  • Initially, 22 snake boats were supposed to participate in the race, but two withdrew their participation from the race, and brought it down to 20.
  • This 68th edition of Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which held after a break of two years due to Covid-19 pandemic, was flagged off by chief guest DK Joshi, Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar.
  • The snake boat dimensions and crew are typically about 40 metres long, 1.5 metres wide, with 130 oarsmen.

Apeksha Becomes First Indian Woman to Reach WJS Championship Final

  • Apeksha Fernandes became the first Indian woman to make the Junior World final by finishing eighth overall. Apeksha Fernandes set a new national record with a time record of 2:18.18. She finished eighth in the women's 200m butterfly final by clocking 2:19.14 at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships 2022.
  • The previous National record was set in June 2022 at 2:18.39 which was set by Apeksha Fernandes. She has one of the fastest reaction times of 0.65s.

Asia Cup: Rohit Sharma Becomes India's 2nd Most-successful T20I Skipper

  • Rohit Sharma overtook Virat Kohli and became India's second most successful T20I captain.
  • Sharma, who had taken up T20I captaincy after Kohli stepped down, has won 31 matches in the 37 outing while Kohli achieved 30 wins in 50 T20I matches.
  • Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has helped India win 41 T20I matches under his captaincy from 72 matches, is still on top of the list.
