Cabinet Approves Signing of Guarantees for FIFA U17 Women's World Cup

  • The Union Cabinet approved the signing of guarantees for hosting FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup 2022 in India.
  • FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup 2022 is scheduled to be held in India between October 11 and 30.
  • The seventh edition of the biennial youth tournament will be the first-ever FIFA women's competition to be hosted by India.
  • An assistance of Rs. 10 crore would be given to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the field of play maintenance, stadium power, energy & cabling, stadia and training site branding etc.

Vinesh Phogat Wins Bronze in Women's 53kg in World Wrestling Championships

  • Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian woman wrestler to win two medals at the World Wrestling Championships as she clinched a bronze in 53kg by defeating Emma Jonna Malmgren of Sweden in Serbia.
  • Vinesh had also won a bronze in the 2019 edition in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
  • She had made it to the bronze play-off through the repechage round after losing to Khulan Batkhuyag of Mongolia, the 2022 Asian Championships silver medallist, in her first bout.
  • Vinesh, a triple Commonwealth Games champion, made it to the repechage round after Batkhuyag reached the final.
  • In the repechage round, Vinesh first beat Zhuldyz Eshimova of Kazakhstan in a Victory by Fall (4-0) decision and then won the next bout after her opponent Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan did not turn up due to injury to advance to the bronze medal round.

Golden Slam for Golden Girls

  • Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova completed the career 'Golden Slam' by winning the US Open women's doubles title. The pair fought back to beat unseeded Americans Caty McNally and Taylor Townsend 3-6 7-5 6-1 to pick up their sixth Grand Slam doubles title together. They won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year but were unable to defend their French Open title due to Krejcikova's illness.

Alireza Firouzja Wins Sinquefield Cup & the Grand Chess Tour

  • Alireza Firouzja beat Ian Nepomniachtchi in play-offs to win the ninth edition of the Sinquefield Cup. Firouzja also grabbed an extra $100,000 for winning this year's Grand Chess Tour. The youngster came from winning the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz Tournament a couple of weeks ago.
  • Alireza Firouzja is an Iranian-French chess grandmaster. Firouzja is the youngest ever 2800-rated player, beating the previous record set by Magnus Carlsen by more than five months. A chess prodigy, Firouzja won the Iranian Chess Championship at age 12 and earned the Grandmaster title at 14.

Carlos Alcaraz Beats Casper Ruud to Clinch 2022 US Open Singles Title

  • Carlos Alcaraz won the men's singles title in US Open 2022 after beating Norway's Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
  • He also became the youngest ever player to hold the top spot in the ATP rankings chart, equalled the biggest ever jump to No.1 spot made by a player on the ATP list and became the fourth player from Spain to be crowned the world no.1 after his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moya and Nadal.

Karnataka Wins 75th Senior National Aquatic Championships Held in Guwahati

  • Karnataka extended their stranglehold in swimming as they clinched the overall championship at the 75th Senior National Aquatic Championships which was concluded at the Dr. Zakir Hussain Aquatic Complex in Guwahati.
  • Karnataka finished overall swimming champions with 250 points, with 129 points coming from the men's division with women's division contributing 121 points. The State finished with 14 gold, 4 silver and 11 bronze medals, comfortably ahead of the second-placed SSCB (6 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze).

Odisha CM Launches Host City Logo for FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the official host city logo of the state for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2022.
  • Odisha is one of the three hosts for the World Cup, which is scheduled to be held between October 11-30 across Odisha, Goa and Maharashtra. This will be the first FIFA women's competition to be held in India and the first FIFA competition to be hosted by Odisha.

Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka Beat Pakistan

  • Coming off a socio-economic crisis and the worst turmoil in its country's history, the Sri Lankan cricket team gifted the island nation joy and the sixth Asia Cup title as they defeated Pakistan by 23 runs in the final in Dubai, their fifth T20I win on the trot. Batting first, Sri Lanka rode on Bhanuska Rajapaksa's unbeaten 71 off 45 balls to power the team to 170/6 in 20 overs. In reply, Pakistan was never in the chase losing early wickets. 

US Open 2022: Iga Swiatek Clinches Maiden Women's Singles Title

  • World number one Iga Swiatek scripted history when she beat Tunisia's Ons Jabeur 6-2 7-6(5) in the US Open final) to clinch her maiden trophy at Flushing Meadows and third Grand Slam crown. Poland's Swiatek fell on her back and covered her face with her hands after prevailing in the tight second set tiebreak, having sealed the win when the fifth seed's shot sailed long.

Australia Captain Aaron Finch Retires from ODI Cricket

  • Aaron Finch, Australia's captain announced his retirement from one-day international cricket after Australia's third and final ODI against New Zealand. Finch would continue to be the captain of the Australian cricket team for T20 and would lead it in defense of its world title in the T20 World Cup which is going to be held in October and November in Australia.
  • Finch is known as one of the most damaging opening batters in the world, Finch has scored 5,401 runs in the ODI format with an average of close to 40, and 17 centuries.

Deepak Punia out of World Championships

  • Wrestler Deepak Punia (86kg) was ruled out of the upcoming World Championships in Belgrade.
  • The 23-year-old from Haryana's Chhara village sustained an injury in his left hand. Punia had won silver at the 2019 World Championships in the 86kg category.
  • The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) conducted trials in the 86kg category and selected Sanjeet for the World Championships.
  • Ravi Dahiya who left for Russia and would join the squad in Serbia later.
