Paralympics-IPC Suspends Russian, Belarusian Committees with Immediate Effect

The International Paralympic Committee voted to suspend the National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) of Russia and Belarus with immediate effect, placing their para-athletes' hopes of competing at the 2024 Paralympics in jeopardy.
Athletes from the two countries had previously been barred from competing in the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, for which Belarus has been a staging area.
Russia's suspension was passed by 64 votes to 39, with 16 abstentions, at the IPC's extraordinary General Assembly in Berlin. The suspension of Belarus' NPC passed 54-45, with 18 abstentions.
Both NPCs were suspended for their "inability to comply with their membership obligations under the IPC Constitution."
Due to their suspension, NPC Russia and NPC Belarus lost all rights and privileges of IPC membership, in accordance with the IPC Constitution.

Asian Airgun Championship: Indian Junior Women's Pistol Team Wins Gold

The Indian junior women's pistol team comprising Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Shikha Narwal won a gold medal in the 15th Asian Airgun Championship in Daegu, South Korea.
It took India's gold count to 23, with one day of the competition remaining.
The trio beat South Korea's Kim Minseo, Kim Juhee and Yang Jiin 16-12 in the final.
In the women's 10m air pistol team event, Rhythm Sangwan, Palak and Yuvika Tomar won silver after going down 12-16 to South Koreans Kim Jangmi, Kim Bomi and Yoo Hyunyoung.

Mary Kom is Chairperson of Athletes Commission

Six-time World women's boxing champion and Olympic medallist Mary Kom was elected as the Chairperson of the Athletes Commission of the Indian Olympic Associaiton (IOA).
The vice chairperson position went to Sharath Kamal, a table tennis player.
Both received their certificates from the Returning Officer Umesh Sinha who will conduct the election of the (IOA) on December 10.

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz Becomes Youngest Year-end ATP World Number 1

Following Rafael Nadal's defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the ATP Finals 2022 that knocked him out of contention for the final four, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest year-end ATP World Number 1, making him the first teenager to achieve this feat.
Alcaraz experienced an incredible rise in the world of tennis this year. He soared from number 32 to the top of this sport's mountain on September 12, which is also the biggest jump to number one in 50 editions of year-end ATP rankings.
Before this 19-year-old star, the youngest year-end ATP World Number 1 was Lleyton Hewitt of Australia, who was 20 years, 275 days in age at the time of his crowning in 2001.

Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Mascot Unveiled

Paris 2024 organisers unveiled a Phrygian cap as the official mascot of the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The mascots, named the Phryges, were unveiled with just over 600 days to go before the opening of the Olympic Games in 2024. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games use the same design with slight differences.
The Olympic Phryge is triangular in shape and comes with a friendly smile, blue eyes, a tricolour ribbon and big coloured sneakers. The Paralympic version features a prosthetic leg that goes to the knee.
The mascots have always occupied a special place in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet. "They form the emotional bond between the Games and the people, contributing to the atmosphere and festive spirit in the stadiums and other Olympic venues."

Mary Kom, P.V. Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu and Gagan Narang Elected in IOA Athletes Commission

Olympic medallists MC Mary Kom, P.V. Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu and Gagan Narang were among 10 eminent sportspersons elected as members of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Athletes Commission.
All the 10 elected members of the apex body, five men and as many women, won unopposed in the polls.
Winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan, table tennis player Sharath Kamal, women's hockey captain Rani Rampal, fencer Bhavani Devi, rower Bajrang Lal and former shot putter Om Prakash Singh Karhana are the other six members of the elected panel. All of them are Olympians.

Kenyan Runner Renju Gets Five Years Doping Ban

Keneth Kiprop Renju, winner of the Prague half-marathon in April, was banned for five-year as the latest in a long list of Kenyan athletes suspended for suspected doping. Keneth Kiprop Renju, was banned for the "presence/use of a prohibited substance (Methasterone)".
A total of 54 Kenyan athletes have been banned for doping including Keneth Kiprop Renju.
The East African country is third on the list by the Athletics Integrity Unit of most athlete suspensions due to doping.
Russia tops the list with 87 athletes, and India is second with 62 suspensions.

Sharath Kamal to Receive 2022 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna

Table tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal will receive the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the country's highest sporting honour, from President Droupadi Murmu on November 30 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
He is the first Indian table tennis player ever to become ten times Senior National Champion hence breaking the record of eight-time National Champion Kamlesh Mehta.
Based on the recommendations of the Committee and after due scrutiny, Government has decided to confer awards upon the following sportspersons, coaches and entities:
