French Open: Zverev, Swiatek Reaches Semi-finals

  • Alexander Zverev returned to the semi-finals of the French Open a year after leaving Roland Garros in a wheelchair, while defending champion Iga Swiatek also maintained her quest for a third title in four years.
  • Zverev had suffered a season-ending ankle injury in his last-four match against eventual champion Rafa Nadal on Court Philippe Chatrier in 2022 and had surgery, but complications later meant a return to pain-free action was delayed.
  • His comeback gathered pace at Roland Garros and he beat unseeded Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4 to book his place in the last four in Paris for a third time.

Show Cause Notice to Maheshwari Chauhan for Criticising NRAI

  • The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) issued a show cause notice to skeet shooter Maheshwari Chauhan for questioning the departure of trap coach Russell Mark and team's high performance manager Lauryn Mark.
  • The Australian husband-wife duo ended its 14-month stint with the Indian team because it was put off by the delay in the contract negotiations and disagreements with the high performance director Pierre Beauchamp. The duo has since joined Qatar.
  • In an email to the NRAI, Chauhan had said she was disappointed with the circumstances under which the duo ended its relationship with the team. The skeet shooter requested the federation to "reflect on the system, approach and way of dealing with situations".
  • Angered by her mail, NRAI secretary general K Sultan Singh issued her a notice asking her to withdraw her email and furnish an apology letter within seven days or face disciplinary action.

The 2023 Asian U20 Athletics Championships Conclude

  • Indian athletes fetched 19 medals at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2023 held in Yecheon, Republic of Korea from June 4 to 7.
  • Japan topped the medals table with a total of 23 medals - 14 gold, four silver and five bronze. The People's Republic of China came second with eleven gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
  • India matched China's total of 19 medals but finished third as they won fewer gold medals. India bagged six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.
  • The 16-year-old Rezoana Mallick Heena was the most successful Indian athlete in the competition. She won an individual gold medal in the women's 400m race, clocking her second-best timing of 53.32s. It was the first gold medal for India at this edition.
  • Rezoana Mallick Heena also bagged a team gold in the women's 4x400m relay race along with Anushka Dattaray Kumbhar, Riya Nitin Patil and Kanista Teena. She was a part of India's mixed 4x400m relay team that clinched a bronze too.
  • The 2023 Asian U20 Athletics Championships was the 20th edition of the international athletics competition for Asian under-20 athletes, organised by the Asian Athletics Association. Athletes born between 2004 and 2007 competed in 44 events, divided evenly between the sexes. The competition took place over four days from 4–7 June at the Yecheon Stadium in Yecheon, South Korea.

Sunil Kumar Wins the Decathlon Gold

  • Competing with a pole vault borrowed from the organisers, Sunil Kumar won the decathlon gold medal with his personal best performance in the Asian U-20 Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea.
  • Sunil bagged gold as he won the 10-event competition with a personal best tally of 7,003 points on the penultimate day of the competition.
  • Sunil won the 100m hurdles, discus throw and javelin throw to make up for the below-par show in the other events and secure gold in the gruelling discipline competed over two days.

  • India showcased its dominance on the second day of the Under 20 Asian Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea. India's Siddharth Choudhary clinched gold in men's shot put with a personal best throw of 19.52 metres.
  • Further three other athletes Sharuk Khan (3000 m steeplechase), Shivam Lohakare (Javelin), and Susmita (Long Jump) claimed silver medals in their respective events. Shakeel (800 m) and the mixed relay team concluded the day by winning the bronze medal. With this India won six medals on day 2 with the overall tally accounting to nine.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Hangs up His Boots

  • AC Milan's Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic decided to end his playing career at the age of 41 after a trophy-laden career at some of Europe's top clubs. The extrovert Swede's Milan contract expires at the end of June and will not be renewed following a season plagued by injuries, prompting him to end a remarkable career.
  • The larger-than-life striker started his career at Malmo FF in 1999 and left for Ajax Amsterdam in 2001 before embarking on a journey that has included spells at Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Paris St Germain, Manchester United and Milan.
  • Ibrahimovic has won countless domestic leagues and cups plus a long list of individual honours but never got his hands on the Champions League trophy.

French Open 2023: Ons Jabeur Becomes 1st Arab Player to Reach Quarter-finals

  • Tunisian star Ons Jabeur reached the quarter-finals of the French Open after defeating Bernarda Pera in straight sets. Jabeur won 6-3, 6-1 in a commanding performance and set up her quarter-finals game against 14th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
  • Jabeur became the first Tunisian and Arab woman to progress that far at the French Open. She is the first African woman to reach the last eight at Roland Garros since South Africa's Amanda Coetzer reached the semi-finals in 1997.
  • Jabeur became the first African player to reach the quarter-finals at each of the four majors in the Open Era.

Flanders Cup 2023 Athletics: Top Indian sprinter Amlan Borgohain Bags Two Gold Medals

  • Top Indian sprinter Amlan Borgohain bagged two gold medals, one each in the men's 100 and 200-meter races at the Flanders Cup 2023 athletics meet, known as the International Antwerp Athletics Gala, in Merksem, Belgium.
  • Borgohain clocked 10.70 seconds to emerge as the fastest man of the meet. He holds the 100-meter national record of 10.25 seconds.
  • In the 200 meter, Borgohain clocked 20.96 seconds to emerge winner ahead of Hofman 21.42 and Jamaica's Samuel Rowe 21.88.
  • Meanwhile, Sapna Kumari finished behind Belgium's Amber Vanden Bosch in the women's 100m hurdles after clocking 14.10, in what was a two-woman field.

Asian U20 Athletics Championship: Heena Mallick, Bharatpreet Singh Win Gold

  • India's Heena Mallick won India's first gold medal in the women's 400 m event at the Asian U20 Athletics Championship in Yecheon, South Korea.
  • Mallick won her race in 53.31 seconds.
  • Bharatpreet Singh clinched India's second gold in the tournament with a 55.66 m throw in the men's discus throw event.
  • Antima Pal won India's third medal of the day, a bronze, in the women's 5,000 m race with a time of 17 minutes and 17.11 seconds.

Third Khelo India University Games Concludes in Varanasi

  • The third edition of Khelo India University Games, organised in four cities of Uttar Pradesh from May 25 to June 3, concluded in Varanasi. A simple closing ceremony was held in view of the train accident in Odisha. More than 4,000 athletes from 108 universities in the country participated in the games.
  • With a total of 69 medals — 26 gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze — Panjab University stood first, followed by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (total 68 medals — 24 gold, 27 silver, 17 bronze) and Jain University, Karnataka (total 32 medals — 16 gold, 10 silver, 6 bronze).

Sainyam Wins Women's 10m Air Pistol Gold in Junior World Cup

  • India's Sainyam claimed the gold medal in the women's 10m air pistol competition to start the country's campaign in the ISSF Junior World on a rousing note.
  • Sainyam shot 238 in the eight-women final to finish on top of the podium, even as the other Indian in fray, Suruchi Inder Singh settled for the sixth place with 154.1.
  • Korea's Kim Minseo claimed the silver medal with a total score of 236, while the bronze went to Liu Heng Yu of Taipei, who shot 216.9.
  • Sainyam was placed third in the qualification with 571, while Suruchi was in fifth place.

Lakshya Sen Loses Men's Singles semi-finals against Kunlavut Vitidsarn in Thailand Open

  • The Indian challenge at the $420,000 Thailand Open badminton ended as Lakshya Sen lost a tough men's singles semi-finals battle against Thailand'sr Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
  • Playing his first semi-finals since winning the Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham 2022, Sen lost 21-13, 17-21, 13-21 in Bangkok. This was Sen's fourth loss in eight outings against the Thai, who was backed by a vociferous crowd.
  • Kunlavut Vitidsarn beat Lee Cheuk Yiu (21-11, 21-10) and won the tournament.

India's Manjeet Wins Bronze in UWW Ranking Series Wrestling Event in Kyrgyzstan

  • Manjeet won a bronze in the men's Greco Roman 55 kg category to open India's medal account in the UWW Ranking Series wrestling event in Kyrgyzstan.
  • Manjeet lost to Ikhtiyor Botirov of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals with the latter notching up victory by superiority (VSU1, 13-4). But, since Botirov reached the final, Manjeet got a chance to fight for one of the two bronze medals.
  • The Indian beat Yersin Abyir of Kazakhstan 14-9 via VPO1 (winner with no technical superiority but the loser scored at least 1 point) to grab a bronze on the opening day of competitions.
  • Kazakhstan's Marlan Mukashev beat Botirov in the gold medal bout.
