Amid Wrestlers' Protest, Wrestling Federation of India to Hold Elections

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections would be held on July 6 amid the ongoing protest by wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, this was announced by the newly-appointed returning officer for WFI elections Mahesh Mittal Kumar.
The announcement came after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed retired high court judge Mahesh Mittal Kumar as the returning officer to set the poll process in motion.
Each state unit can send two representatives and each representative shall have one vote. So, the Electoral College for the WFI elections will consist of 50 votes. But it is learnt that a few state bodies, dissolved by the WFI in the past, have also staked their claim to participate in the elections.
The returning office after going through the credentials of the representatives of the factions will decide who can vote and who cannot.
The WFI elections will be held for the post of president, senior vice-president, four vice-presidents, secretary-general, treasurer, two joint secretaries, and five executive members.

ICC Player of the Month for May 2023

Harry Tector was selected as the ICC Men's Player of the Month for May 2023, marking Ireland's first-ever recipient of the award. He emerged victorious in a tough competition against the renowned Pakistani cricketer Babar Azam and Bangladesh's promising young batter Najmul Hossain Shanto. On the other hand, the ICC Women's Player of the Month for May 2023 was awarded to Thipatcha Putthawong (Thailand), a talented 19-year-old player.

Ashmita, Ravi Win Maldives International Challenge

Indian shuttlers Ashmita Chaliha and Ravi clinched the women's and men's singles titles, respectively, with contrasting victories at the Maldives International Challenge in Male. Third seed Ashmita eked out a 19-21 21-17 21-11 win over compatriot Tasnim Mir. Unseeded Ravi beat Malaysia's seventh seed Soong Joo Ven 21-19 21-18.
This was Ashmita Chaliha the Assam shuttler's, Ashmita Chaliha, third BWF International Challenge victory having previously won the Tata Open India International and Dubai International.

Uruguay Win Maiden Under-20 World Cup

Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 and won their first Under-20 World Cup title at the Diego Maradona Stadium, Italy.
Luciano Rodriguez scored the winning goal in the 86th minute in a header from close range, giving Uruguay a much deserved victory after an entire match of dominance against Italy.

Rodri is UEFA Champions League Player of the Season 2022-23

Manchester City midfielder Rodri was named the Champions League's Player of the Season by UEFA after a stellar 2022-23 campaign.
Rodri scored the winning goal as City lifted the trophy for the first time when it beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the final.
Napoli's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was named the Champions League's Young Player of the Season, capping a remarkable campaign for the 22-year-old Georgian.
Kvaratskhelia won the league title with Napoli and also claimed Serie A's Player of the Season award earlier.

FIH Pro League 2023: India Beat Argentina in Final

India beat Argentina 2-1 in its final FIH Pro League 2022-23 match in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Akashdeep Singh and Sukhjeet Singh scored goals for India, while Lucas Toscani netted the only goal for Argentina.
With this victory, India consolidated their position atop the FIH Pro League standings with 30 points from 16 matches. Argentina is fifth with 13 points from 14 matches. India now holds a four-point advantage over second-placed Great Britain in the FIH Pro League 2022-23 standings but the European team has four games to go. The Indian men's hockey team finished in fourth place in their debut FIH Pro League campaign back in 2020-21. Their best finish in the competition, third, came in the 2021-22 season.

Novak Djokovic Wins French Open, Record 23rd Grand Slam Men's Singles Title

Novak Djokovic won the French Open for his 23rd Grand Slam singles title, breaking the men's record he shared with Rafael Nadal, a record that he may now own for a very long time.
Djokovic beat Norwegian Casper Ruud 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 in the final at Roland Garros.
Djokovic also broke Nadal's record as the oldest French Open singles champion. He became the first man to win all four tennis majors at least three times, joining three women who did so (Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and Margaret Court).

Asia Cup 2023 Set to be Played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka

After long rounds of discussion, the impasse over hosting the Asia Cup 2023 seems to getting over with Pakistan and Sri Lanka looking set to host the Asia Cup in September later this year (2023).
As per report, the Asian Cricket Council is ready to approve the hybrid model suggested by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi. As per the model, all India games will be played in Sri Lanka including against Pakistan.
The tournament, to be played in 50-over format as a lead up to ICC ODI World Cup, will have 13 matches including the final, which will also be played in Sri Lanka, shall India make it to the last match.
The tournament hit the impasse after India decided not to travel to Pakistan due to security reasons and demanded that the tournament be shifted to a neutral venue. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also had the support of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as well.

Japanese Tokito Oda Becomes Youngest Grand Slam Wheelchair Champion 2023

Japanese teenager Tokito Oda won the French Open wheelchair final and became the youngest man to win a Grand Slam tournament in any discipline, while Diede De Groot won the women's final for her 18th major singles title.
The 17-year-old Oda seeded second beat top-seeded Alfie Hewett of Britain 6-1, 6-4 on Court Philippe Chatrier for his first major title. The International Tennis Federation confirmed Oda's record, which excludes juniors, and listed his age as 17 years, 33 days.
His win avenged his defeat to seven-time major winner Hewett at the Australian Open in January.

India Clinches Maiden Women's Junior Asia Cup Title

The Indian junior women's hockey team stunned four-time champions South Korea 2-1 and clinched its maiden Asia Cup title. Annu and Neelam scored for India, while Park Seo Yeon was the lone scorer for South Korea.
Indian captain Preeti was named Player of the Match.

Australia Crowned with ICC World Test Championship 2023

Australia clinched the title of World Test Champions in a commanding fashion, securing a resounding 209-run victory over India in the thrilling WTC Final at The Oval. Travis Head and Steve Smith's remarkable centuries in the first innings laid the foundation for Australia's early control of the Test. Despite India's valiant response, the match extended to a fifth day, but they fell short of an extraordinary record chase, ultimately being bowled out for 234. Australia scripted history as they became the first men's team in world cricket to win an International Cricket Council (ICC) world title in all three formats.
Australia's ICC Title's (Men's Cricket) are 50-over World Cups: 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015, Champions Trophy: 2006, 2009, T20 World Cup – 2021 and World Test Championship – 2021-23.

Iga Swiatek Retains French Open Title

Poland's Iga Swiatek won the women's final match of the French Open tennis tournament against Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris.
Swiatek clinched her third Roland-Garros title and joined Serena Williams (3), Monica Seles (3), Arantxa Sánchez Vicario (3), Justine Henin (4), Steffi Graf (6) and Chris Evert (7) on the list of women who have become the champion in Paris at least thrice.

French Open: Disqualified Japanese Player Miyu Kato Claims Mixed Doubles Title with Tim Puetz

Japan's Miyu Kato became a French Open champion, four days after she was controversially disqualified from the women's doubles for accidentally hitting a ball girl. Kato and her German partner Tim Puetz defeated Bianca Andreescu and Michael Venus 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 in the mixed doubles final at Roland Garros.

Anurag Thakur Sends off Indian Contingent of 198 Athletes to Special Olympics World Summer Games ...

Special Olympics Bharat organised a torch run and a national send-off ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, for the Indian contingent for the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2023 Berlin, Germany which will take place between June 17, 2023 and June 25, 2023.
India sent a contingent comprising 198 Athletes and Unified partners and 57 Coaches to participate across 16 sports at the prestigious event.
The ceremony was graced by Union Minister Anurag Thakur, Department of Youth Affairs and Sports and Department of Information and Broadcasting as the chief guest for the torch run, Union Minister Smriti Irani, Department of Women and Child Development and Department of Minority Affairs as the chief guest for the send-off ceremony, among other distinguished guests.

Unseeded Muchova Blooms

Karolina Muchova defied all odds by saving a match point before battling past second seed Aryna Sabalenka and reached the French Open final.
The unseeded Muchova will meet defending champion Iga Swiatek, who reached the final for the third time in four years with a 6-2 7-6 (9-7) win over Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, would have taken over top spot in the rankings by winning the title in Paris.
