NATO Military Exercises in Albania

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has launched joint military exercises "DEFENDER-Europe 21" in Albania with thousands of military forces from the United States and other countries in the first such large-scale drills since World War II in the Western Balkans. Albania is playing a critical part in the DEFENDER-Europe 21 exercises with Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore operations taking place.
DEFENDER-Europe is an annual large-scale U.S. Army-led, multinational exercise, defensive in nature and focused on deterring aggression, which this year focuses on building operational readiness and interoperability with NATO and a greater number of allies and partners over a wider area of operations than ever before.
Around 28,000 U.S., allied and partner forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in more than a dozen nations from the Baltics and Africa to the critical Black Sea and Balkan regions.

U.S. Approves M1A1 Tank Structures, Chinook Helicopters Sale to Australia

The U.S. State Department approved two potential arms deals to Australia, totaling $1.94 billion, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSA) said in a release.
In the first, the United States would sell 160 M1A1 tank structures to build M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams Main Battle Tanks, M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicles and other vehicles, altogether worth $1.685 billion.
The heavy armed combat systems deal would enhance the "lethality, survivability, and interoperability of the Australian Army" and "strengthen its homeland defense and deter regional threats."
The principal contractors for the deal would be General Dynamics Land Systems, BAE Systems Leonardo DRS and Honeywell Aerospace.
The second deal involves the sale of four CH-47F cargo helicopters and related equipment worth $259 million.

Fighter Aircraft Tejas Cleared to Carry Python-5 air-to-air Missile

Tejas, India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), has been cleared to carry the 5th generation Python-5 air-to-air missile (AAM) as a part of its weapons package which would significantly enhance its combat abilities.
The decision was taken after a series of trials were conducted to validate the performance of the aircraft.
The trials were aimed to validate the enhanced capability of the already integrated Derby Beyond Visual Range (BVR) AAM on Tejas. The test-firing of the missile was done in Goa which completed missile trials to validate its performance under extremely challenging conditions.

Coast Guard Conducts Successful Landing, Deck Trial of ALH Mk-III Helicopter

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted successful landing and deck trial of the newly-inducted ALH Mk-III helicopter on one of its ships off Chennai coast.
The ICG called it a landmark event in "ship integration" of this indigenously-built helicopter.
The integration will increase reach and operational capabilities of the ICG manifold.
The ICG will induct 16 ALH Mk-III built by HAL, Bangalore under Atmanirbhar Bharat to enhance preparedness towards coastal surveillance and search and rescue operations.

India, China among Top 3 Military Spenders

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the military spending across the world rose to $1,981 billion in 2020, registering an increase of 2.6 per cent as compared with figures for 2019.
According to the data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the five biggest spenders in 2020, which together accounted for 62 per cent of the global military expenditure, were the United States, China, India, Russia and the United Kingdom.
The US military expenditure reached an estimated $778 billion, representing an increase of 4.4 per cent over 2019, while the spending by China grew for the 26th consecutive year, says the report titled 'Trends in World Military Expenditure, 2020'.

Swarnim Vijay Mashaal Reaches Jammu, Tributes Paid to 1971 War Heroes

The 'Swarnim Vijay Mashaal', marking the commemoration of 50 years of India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, arrived at the Jammu-based Tiger Division.
The victory torch was received at the Tiger War Memorial by Lt Col Rishma Sarin, the wife of Major Mohit Sharma who sacrificed his life in the service of the nation during an encounter with terrorists in Kupwara district in 2009.
The ceremony at the Tiger War Memorial started with laying of wreaths by Maj Gen Neeraj Gosain, General Officer Commanding Tiger Division, Brig N R Pandey, Brig G S Shan (Retd), veterans and the serving soldiers of Tiger Division.
