Israel Successfully Tests Airborne High-power Laser

Israeli military has successfully tested an airborne high-power laser which has the capability to shoot down drones.
Israel already has large and sophisticated air defense system.
This system had 90 per cent interception rate against thousands of rockets which were fired from Gaza during 11-day war of May 2021.
Laser is a prototype developed with Elbit Systems. It was mounted on a civilian plane and successfully shot down drones in recent test conducted over Mediterranean Sea.
Laser weapon is a directed-energy weapon based on lasers. As of January 2020, directed-energy weapons including lasers are currently at experimental stage. It is yet to be seen if or when laser weapons will be deployed as practical, high-performance military weapons. Laser generates a beam of light which needs clear air or a vacuum to work without thermal blooming.

Turkish Aerospace Builds Europe's 2nd Biggest Wind Tunnel

Turkish Aerospace is building Turkey's biggest and Europe's second largest subsonic wind tunnel facility. The facility is underway for the purpose of carrying out wind tunnel tests of Turkish Fighter. The wind tunnel is intended to be used in the development of indigenous, rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, especially the Turkish Fighter.
The tunnel will have three different test sections, large, small and open. The test specimens will be positioned in these sections and will be equipped with state of the art technology measurement and sensing devices for advanced testing.
With the integrated moving ground belt system, landing and take-off tests for aircraft will be carried out only in this tunnel in Turkey. In addition to these test capabilities, the production, integration and instrumentation of the models to be tested will also be carried out in this facility and significant contributions will be made to the product development process.

JK Light Infantry Receives 'Victory Flame' in Commemoration of 1971 India-Pakistan War

As part of celebrations of 50 years of India's triumph over Pakistan in 1971 war, soldiers and war veterans at Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JKLI) Regimental Centre in Srinagar received the Victory Flame.
In commemoration of the event, Army Bands put up a spectacular performance of martial music, which was followed by a guard of honour to the Victory Flame, felicitation of veterans and Veer Naris. A wreath laying ceremony was also held for tribute to the martyrs of JKLI regiment.

Russia to Develop SU 57 Fifth-generation Fighter for Export

Russian authorities plan to develop the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet in a two-seat version, making it the first in the current era of modern fighter jets.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Yuri Borisov, revealed that the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Sukhoi Design Bureau are planning to develop the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter with two seats in an export configuration.
The Ministry of Defense and the Sukhoi Design Bureau have plans to develop a two-pilot aircraft which will increase export demand for this model. And that could create additional demand.
Separately, Russian state technology company Rostec called the Sukhoi Su-57 the world's first two-seat, fifth-generation fighter aircraft, which they are currently developing for an export version.

India, 3 EU Nations Begin Naval Drill

India and three European nations began a two-day high-voltage naval war-game in the Gulf of Aden with a larger aim of improving operational interoperability and promote, peace, security and stability in the key waterways. Five warships from the four navies are participating in the 'EUNAVFOR' joint naval exercise featuring advanced air defence and anti-submarine drills, cross deck helicopter operations, tactical manoeuvres and search and rescue missions.
European Union Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR) is the EU's counter-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia.
The Indian Navy has deployed its warship INS Trikand for the exercise. The other warships are Italian Navy ship ITS Carabinere, Spanish ship ESPS Navarra, and two French Navy ships FS Tonnerre and FS Surcouf.

China, India and Pakistan Expanding Nuclear Arsenal

According to a study by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China, Pakistan and India have 350, 165 and 156 nuclear warheads respectively as of January 2021 and the three countries appear to be expanding their nuclear arsenals.
It also said as per its assessment, Russia and the US together possess over 90 percent of the estimated 13,080 global nuclear weapons.
There are nine countries in the world that have nuclear weapons: the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea.

Defence Minister Inaugurates 12 Strategic Projects of Border Roads Organisation (BRO)

Enhancing road infrastructure is key to ensuring connectivity in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh while inaugurating 12 border roads.
He said that the roads that were being inaugurated hold "strategic and socio-economic importance" as they will play an important role in strengthening national security as well as promoting development of the Northeastern states.
These border road projects are part of India's 'Act East Policy' wherein special emphasis is being laid on the overall development of border areas.

Ordnance Factory Board Scrapped

In a major decision of the Union Cabinet, the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), first set up by the British in 1775, now under the Ministry of Defence will cease to exist.
Seven separate companies are planned to be created, each doing a specific manufacturing role. The existing 41 factories under the OFB will be subsumed under one or the other of the seven new companies, all 100 per cent government owned public sector undertakings (PSU).
The seven new – yet to be named—PSU entities will cover a separate sector. One will be the 'Ammunition and Explosives group'. This will engage in production of ammunition of various calibre and explosives, not only for the Make in India initiative but also for exports.
The 'Vehicles group' would engage in production of defence mobility and combat vehicles such as Tanks, Trawls, BMP and Mine Protected Vehicles.
'Weapons & Equipment group' would engage in production of small arms, medium and large calibre guns and other weapon systems. This was expected to increase the share in the domestic market through meeting domestic demand as well as product diversification.
The other four companies would be 'Troop Comfort Items group', 'Ancillary group', 'Opto-Electronics group' and 'Parachute group'.
