Sethrichem Sangtam Wins the First Rohini Nayyar Prize

  • Sethrichem Sangtam, who runs an NGO that works with farmers in eastern Nagaland, won the first Rohini Nayyar Prize for outstanding contribution to rural development.
  • Sangtam was presented with cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh, a citation, and trophy.
  • The prize was instituted in memory of Rohini Nayyar, renowned economist who worked with the Planning Commission. She died in 2021.
  • The Nayyar Foundation for Social and Economic Purpose, a foundation set up by her family, gives away the annual prize to those under 40 for their contribution to rural development.
  • Sangtam, who runs the NGO 'Better Life Foundation', works with nearly 1,200 farmers in Nagaland's Tuensang and Kiphire to promote sustainable farming practices and help farmers' transition from slash-and-burn to settled cultivation.

Smart Cities Mission Bags Digital India Award for DataSmart Cities

  • The Smart Cities Mission was picked as the platinum icon in the Digital India Awards 2022 under the Data Sharing and Use for Socio Economic Development category for its 'DataSmart Cities: Empowering Cities through Data' initiative.
  • Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said that the DataSmart Cities initiative is a key step in creating a robust data ecosystem that enables evidence-based decision-making in cities.
  • The awards instituted in 2009 are one-of-a-kind in India for honouring the efforts of different government entities in the digital realm.
  • 'DataSmart Cities' initiative aims to harnesses the power of data for better governance in India's 100 Smart Cities.

West Bengal's 'Duare Sarkar' Scheme Wins Centre's Digital India Award

  • West Bengal's flagship 'Duare Sarkar' or government at doorstep scheme won the Platinum Award at the Digital India Awards 2022.
  • The scheme was awarded by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in the 'Public Digital Platforms — Central Ministries, Departments and States' category.
  • President Droupadi Murmu will give the award to the state on January 7 at a function in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
  • Since its rollout in December 2020, 'Duare Sarkar' has been held in five phases and over 6.6 crore services were successfully delivered to the citizens through 3.61 lakh outreach camps.

Railways Bag 9 Awards for Energy Conservation

  • The Indian Railways have won nine National Energy Conservation Awards for the year 2022, with the South Central Railways bagging the first and second prize in railway stations category.
  • These awards were given for the best energy management practices and presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a function held by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the aegis of Ministry of Power.
  • The first prize was awarded for Kacheguda Station (Telangana) and the second to Guntakal Station (Andhra Pradesh) for energy conservation measures in railway stations category.
  • Certificate of merit was awarded to the Kanpur Central Railway Station (NCR), Rajahmudry Railway Station (SCR) and Tenali Railway station (SCR) under this category.
  • Under the buildings category, Ajmer Workshop of North Western Railway was awarded the first prize. Certificate of merit was awarded to railway hospital Guntakal (SCR), Electric Traction Training Centre, Vijayawada (SCR) and Divisional Railway Hospital, Pratapnagar (WR).

Meghalaya Health Department Awarded for Best Practice in Tuberculosis ACSM

  • The Meghalaya government, which adopted a 'Jan Andolan' (people's movement) against Tuberculosis received an award for best practices in controlling the disease that affects 2.6 million people in India every year. The award for Best Practice in Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilisation (ACSM) in Tuberculosis control was presented to representatives of the health department at a national workshop, aimed at ending TB infections, in the national capital.

SpiceJet Awarded 'Safety Performer of the Year' Award by Delhi Airport

  • SpiceJet won the 'Safety Performer of the Year' award at the annual GMR Delhi Airport Awards for being the top performer among the self-handling airlines, besides for its success in reducing ground safety violations.
  • SpiceJet said that its ground handling team at Delhi Airport achieved this performance through constant focus on quality improvements, innovation and hard work.
  • SpiceJet was recently audited by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and its operations, safety processes, and systems were found to be strong and at par with the global best practices and safety standards.
  • The airline was the only scheduled Indian airline part of the audit conducted by ICAO — the United Nations aviation arm. The audit of SpiceJet safety systems "helped India achieve" its highest-ever safety ranking in ICAO audit.
