Women Can Apply to Certain Branches of Indian Navy University: Centre

  • The Centre informed Delhi High Court that women are now welcome to apply to certain branches of the Indian Navy University.
  • The executive branch's general service (X) cadre, IT, and the engineering and electrical branch are now hiring female candidates through the Indian Navy University Entry Scheme, the High Court was informed.
  • A panel of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad disposed of fa petition that asked for the admission of female candidates to some branches of the Indian Navy University where female entrance was previously prohibited after taking note of the Centre's arguments.

IIT Kanpur Inks Pact with Rice University of USA to Enrich Academic and Research Collaboration

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and William Marsh Rice University, USA signed a cooperation agreement. IIT Kanpur already has an on-campus Rice-IITK Collaborative Centre working in the areas of sustainable energy, materials, water, alternative fuels, etc.
  • This new agreement offers the two universities newer avenues to work towards collaborative teaching, training, and research in areas of mutual interest. As part of this agreement, IIT Kanpur and Rice University will explore opportunities for student exchange activities; joint research and publications; and organizing joint conferences and workshops that involve scholars, policymakers, and business leaders from around the world.

Pankaj R. Patel is New Chairperson of IIM Ahmedabad

  • Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) appointmented Pankaj R. Patel as the new Chairperson of its Board of Governors.
  • Chairman of Zydus Lifesciences Ltd, Patel succeeded Kumar Mangalam Birla, who completed his four-year term. Patel is the fourteenth Chairperson of the IIMA since its inception in 1961. Patel has been a member of the IIMA Board of Governors for eight years.
  • Zydus Lifesciences Ltd is a discovery-driven, global life sciences company with operations in 55 countries.
  • Patel was also appointed as the part-time non-official director in the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India. He is on the Governing Board of IIM Udaipur; Invest India and India Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. He is also a member of the CEO Advisory Committee of International Generics and Biosimilars Association (IGBA).

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Finale: Port Blair Girls, Hyderabad and Bengaluru Boys Bag Top 3 Spots

  • Samsung announced the top three winners of the inaugural edition of Solve for Tomorrow in India, its national education and innovation competition that aims to support youth from around the country wanting to solve real life issues and transform people's lives with their innovative ideas.
  • Solve for Tomorrow is a CSR initiative by Samsung.
  • The top three winning teams – Sputnik Brain, Udaan, and Alpha Monitor – got a total grant of INR 1 crore and a 6-month incubation by the Foundation for Innovation & Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi, to strengthen their prototypes, and seek real-world consumer validation for their products and services.
  • Each of the winning teams received a certificate and a beautiful Solve for Tomorrow trophy that is inspired by the program logo and expresses boldness and aspiration. Each team member also received exciting Samsung products – a Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 laptop and Samsung Galaxy Buds2. The winning teams also got an 85-inch Samsung Flip interactive digital board each for their respective school or college.

Punjab Govt. Decides to Name Schools after Freedom Fighters

  • Government schools in Punjab will be named after martyrs and freedom fighters, School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said. Village panchayats and the school management committees have been asked to pass resolutions for schools to be renamed.
  • They will then send the same to the state headquarters within the next month through principals, along with the biographical notes about the martyrs and freedom fighters.
  • Bains said the decision has been taken so that future generations get to know about the sacrifices of martyrs and freedom fighters for the country.

UGC Asks Higher Education Institutions to Adopt 'Professors of Practice' Guidelines

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) asked higher education institutions across the country to initiate necessary steps to engage professionals and industry experts as 'professors of practice' in their respective institutes.
  • The higher education regulator in August had approved the draft guidelines for engaging 'professor of practice' in Universities and colleges. According to the guidelines, those eligible to be engaged as 'professor of practice' include distinguished experts who have made remarkable contributions in their professions from various fields such as engineering, science, technology, entrepreneurship, commerce, social sciences, media, literature, fine arts, civil services, armed forces, legal profession and public administration among others.
  • UGC chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar said that the 'professor of practice' position provides a unique opportunity to the educational institutes to bring diverse skills to complement efforts of faculty members of the institutions.

RBI-developed Financial Literacy Curriculum Coming in Schools, All But 3 States Agree

  • All states, with the exception of three, have agreed to include a financial literacy programme for school education boards that has been developed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other authorities.
  • "If we could inculcate basic financial literacy in school education, then that would be much better to expand financial literacy in the country", Anil Kumar Sharma, Executive Director RBI said.
  • "And as and when the curriculum is going for revision, the school boards will include it. So going forward, we will have this curriculum, especially for Classes 6-10", he added, while speaking at Sa-Dhan National Conference on Financial Inclusion 2022.

Four Schemes to Empower Students, Youths Approved by Jharkhand Cabinet

  • The Jharkhand Cabinet on approved four ambitious schemes to promote education and skill development of students and youths.
  • The schemes are Mukhya Mantri Shiksha Prothsahan Yojana (MMSPY), Eklavya Prasikshan Yojana (EPY) and Guruji Student Credit Card Yojana (GSCCY) of the Higher and Technical Education department, and Labour department's Mukhya Mantri Sarathi Yojana (MMSY).
  • President Droupadi Murmu officially launched these schemes on Jharkhand's Foundation Day on November 15.
  • Under the MMSPY, class 10 pass students will be provided free coaching at Jharkhand-based institutions of national repute for entrance examinations of engineering, medical, common law admission test, mass communication, fashion designing, hotel management and chartered accounting.
  • Along with free coaching, a provision of Rs. 2,500 scholarship per month has also been decided for lodging and other expenses of student.

IIM Bangalore Joins Hands with Assam Govt. to Launch CM's Young Professional Programme

  • The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Assam to jointly operate the 'Chief Minister's Young Professional Programme' (CMYPP).
  • The Chief Minister's Young Professional Programme has been designed by IIM Bangalore and anchored by the school's Office of Executive Education Programmes. This programme is meant for early career individuals with a post-graduate degree in any field and willing to work in the district.
  • The first batch of CMYPP will see more than 65 professionals being recruited jointly by the Assam Government and IIM Bangalore. Upon successful completion of the two-year programme, the participants will be awarded a certificate in public policy and management by IIM Bangalore.

IIT Guwahati Hosts National Conclave on 'Science and Technology Empowerment of Tribal Community'

  • IIT Guwahati hosted a two-day conclave on 'Science and Technology Empowerment of Tribal Community' on 11th and 12th November 2022 in celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (National Tribal Day). The conclave was organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), Govt. of India, in collaboration with IIT Guwahati, North-East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), Shillong, Assam Science & Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Guwahati, Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, Guwahati and Vigyan Prasar, New Delhi:
  • As a Chief Guest, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda, graced the inaugural event of the conclave, while Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh virtually presided over the inaugural event.
  • During the two-day event, DST displayed various initiatives aimed at empowering tribal communities through Science, Technology, and Innovation, while also discussing challenges and opportunities for the empowerment of these communities.

Former AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria Takes Voluntary Retirement

  • Former AIIMS director Randeep Guleria took voluntary retirement after serving at the premier institute for more than 30 years.
  • His five-and-a-half-year tenure as director of the institute ended on September 23 after which he had applied for VRS, which has been approved. Guleria was supposed to superannuate in April 2024.
  • Guleria was one of the key persons leading the government's response during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and played a major role in creating awareness about various aspects related to the pandemic.
  • He joined AIIMS as assistant professor in the Department of Medicine in 1992 and then formed the Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in 2011. He headed the department before taking over as AIIMS director for a five-year term on March 28, 2017.
