IIT Madras, University of Birmingham Join Hands to Offer Masters' Programme

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and the University of Birmingham will soon launch joint masters' programmes. The potential areas include the fields of data science, energy systems, and biomedical engineering. Both universities will also build areas of mutual research interest.
  • The first joint postgraduate programme in data science, energy systems, and biomedical engineering is proposed to start next year before developing further programmes in subsequent years. The director of IIT Madras, Professor V. Kamakoti and Vice Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, Professor Adam Tickell signed a collaborative Statement of Intent.

Conference in JNU to Promote Women Contribution in Science

  • The Jawaharlal Nehru University organised a three-day conference from to promote women's contribution in various sectors of science and entrepreneurship.
  • The main focus was to encourage the dissemination of scientific innovations and outreach to women to achieve sustainable development.
  • The STREE2020 Conference and Expo, held at convention centre, was inaugurated by Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh.
  • It was organised jointly by the JNU and Shakti, a "national movement" for women under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Santishree Pandit.

Tripura Govt. Changes Rules for Govt-aided Schools

  • To guarantee quality education in government-aided schools, the Tripura government has made significant revisions to the rules governing those institutions.
  • As per Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath, under the revised rule, the school managing committee will form a committee similar to the Tripura Teachers' Recruitment Board with approval from the director of the school education department for the hiring drive.
  • According to the minister, a clause not included in the previous service regulation now allows the school authority to transfer teachers to nearby government-aided schools based on demand and the scenario.

Govt to Set up 100 Academies to Promote Archery Amongst Tribal Children

  • Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda has said the government has decided to set up 100 archery academies in the country to promote talent amongst tribal children by nurturing their archery skills. 
  • Mr. Munda said, his Ministry is continuously working for enhancing educational and health facilities and also focusing on generating employment in the tribal areas. 
  • He informed that the government is setting up Eklavya Model Residential School and implementing 'Pradhan Mantri Adi Adarsh Gram Yojna' which aims at mitigating gaps and providing basic infrastructure in villages with significant tribal population.

First Unani Medicine Regional Center of Northeast Inaugurated in Silchar, Assam

  • The first institute of Unani medicine in the Northeast region of India was inaugurated in Silchar town of Assam. The Unani medicine institute in Silchar of Assam was inaugurated by Union Ayush minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • The new complex spreads over an area of 3.5 acres, built with an investment of Rs. 48 crore. The National Projects Construction Corporation (NPCC) developed the complex, which is a Government of India enterprise. It was handed over to Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.

First Drug to Delay Type 1 Diabetes

  • The US Food and Drug Administration recently approved Tzield – the first drug to delay the onset of Type 1 diabetes.
  • Tzield is a monoclonal antibody injection that is capable of preventing the body's immune system from mistakenly attacking cells in the pancreas that make insulin. It was developed by drugmakers Sanofi and Provention Bio. 
  • It is capable of delaying the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes in adults and in pediatric patients aging 8 years and above who have stage 2 type 1 diabetes.
  • Tzield's ability to delay the clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes will reduce the financial burden of the ailment for months to years. It will also improve the quality of life for those who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
  • Type 1 diabetes is a chronic medical condition in which the pancreas produces little to no insulin. It was formerly known as insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes. While it generally appears in children, teens, and young adults, it is known to occur at any age.

IIT Hyderabad Announces Research Fellowships for PhD in Heritage Science and Technology

  • IIT Hyderabad (IITH) inked an MoU with Sri Visweswara Yoga Research Institute (SVYRI) to launch the Mahayogini Rajyalakshmi Devi Heritage Research fellowships for PhD in heritage science and technology.
  • Candidates who possess MTech./ME/MSc (Engineering/Technology) degree in the respective or allied areas or have a BTech. degree or MSc in allied areas and with valid GATE score are eligible to apply.
  • The MRD scholars will draw an enhanced fellowship of Rs. 75,000 per month, and the fellowship will also fund travel to an international conference to present results in relevant fora.
  • The proposed research will be in any area of Science and Technology, as applied to intangible or tangible Indic heritage, such as yoga, ayurveda, music, dance, language, arts, architecture or sculpture at the Department of Heritage Science and Technology (HST) at IITH.

Five New eMasters Degree Programmes in Economics, Fintech and Business by IIT Kanpur

  • Five new eMasters degree programmes in economics, fintech and business analytics were launched by IIT Kanpur. The programmes were created with India's rapid expansion as one of the world's biggest and fastest-growing economies in mind.
  • India has a GDP ranking of fifth; however, its economic environment is drastically changing due to FDIs. These five courses will equip working professionals to support India's comprehensive growth, which is supported by swift economic reforms.
  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur launched the following five new eMasters programmes - Economics and Finance in Business, Economics, Finance and Data Analysis, Economics, Finance, and Public Policy, Data Science and Business Analytics and Financial Technology and Management.
  • These programmes are offered in a high-impact manner with live, interactive classes that are only held on the weekends along with self-paced learning.

Cambridge Dictionary Announces 'Homer' as Word of the Year 2022

  • The Cambridge Dictionary revealed its word of the year for 2022 as "homer", saying that it was inspired by the global word game sensation, Wordle. The word "homer" was searched for nearly 75,000 times during the first week of May 2022, when it was an answer in the word game Wordle. In the context of the game, "homer" does not refer to the Greek poet and author, or a character from Simpson, but refers to an informal American English word for a 'home run' in baseball.
  • Cambridge Dictionary also saw other five-letter words surging in search in 2022 due to the "Wordle effect". The American spelling of "humor" caused the second-highest spike in 2022, followed by "caulk", "tacit, and "bayou", the third, fourth, and fifth place respectively. Cambridge said that the decision to choose this word was influenced by the famous game 'Wordle'.

  • Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the new, state-of-the-art complex of Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) in Silchar, Assam.
  • The newly opened institute is the first such centre in the Northeast on Unani medicine, a traditional medicinal practice among the Ayush systems.
  • It was handed over to Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India.

In a First, Six Women Officers Clear Defence Services Staff Course Exam

  • For the first time, six women officers cleared the prestigious Defence Services Staff Course (DSSC) and Defence Services Technical Staff Course (DSTSC) exam, which is held every September.
  • Four of these officers will undergo a one-year course at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Tamil Nadu, alongside their male counterparts from all three services.
  • The women officers will be imparted training and orientation on operational, military intelligence, operational logistics and administrative aspects of staff appointments.
  • The prestigious Staff Course gives adequate weightage while being considered for command appointments.
  • Among the remaining two women officers, one is on the reserve list of Defence Services Technical Staff Course and the other is shortlisted for Administration and Logistics Management Course (ALMC)/Intelligence Staff Course (ISC).

AIIMS Delhi to Introduce 'Smart Card' Facility at Counters for Patients

  • In a bid to make payments easy for patients, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, will start the 'AIIMS Smart Card' facility in collaboration with the State Bank of India.
  • The AIIMS Finance Division, in collaboration with the SBI, will introduce 'AIIMS Smart Card' facility from April 1, 2023.
  • The premier health organisation said that this service shall be seamlessly integrated with the existing billing facility in the hospital as well as arrangements shall be made for installing payment end points at multiple locations within AIIMS including in all patient care areas, cafeteria, etc.
