India Offers LCA-Tejas, LCH, ALH, Akash Missiles and Naval Boats to Bangladesh

  • Amid China making more efforts to sell more weapons, including submarines to Bangladesh, India recently has conveyed to Bangladesh a list of Indian made defence equipment like LAC-Tejas, LCH, ALH helicopters, Dornier aircraft and other defence equipment that have been cleared and are on offer to Bangladesh for purchase under India's $500 million line of credit.
  • Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla while addressing a seminar at the Bangladesh Institute for International Studies (BIISS) earlier this year had underlined the potential for robust defence cooperation between the two countries.
  • India also welcomed the opportunity for Indian officer to train at premier military institutions of Bangladesh, just as the Indian side is ready to open military training institutes at all levels from officer cadet training to specialised higher command training to Bangladesh.

Navy Gets its Ninth Boeing P-18 Surveillance Aircraft

  • Boeing has delivered the ninth P-18 long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft to the Indian Navy. Eight such aircraft were already in service and these are also being deployed for surveillance and intelligence gathering over the Himalayan's during the ongoing stand-off with China.
  • In addition to maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, P-18 have been deployed to assist during relief and humanitarian missions.
  • The ninth P-18 is the first aircraft to be delivered under an option contract for four additional aircraft that the Indian Ministry of Defence placed in 2016.    

Sri Lanka's First Women Pilots

  • Sri Lankan Air Force officers ADPL Gunarathne and RT Weerawardana became the first female officers commissioned as pilots by the Sri Lanka Air Force.
  • Both the officers were in the 204th pilot course of the Indian Air Force Academy at Hyderabad from July 2018 to June 2019.
  • Training has been one of the strongest pillars of bilateral defence cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. More than half of military training slots in India for foreign countries are provided to Sri Lanka.

MP Government to Set 'Gau Cabinet'

  • A day after promising a law against 'love jihad', the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government announced a 'Cow Cabinet' comprising six departments for the welfare of cattle in the state, the construction of cow shelters and the allocation of a budget for it.
  • Madhya Pradesh has nearly 1.96 crore heads of cattle, of which nearly 80% are either not productive or low in productivity.
  • The former Kamal Nath government had begun a 'Project Gaushala' last year to build 1,000 low-cost cow shelters, as per the party's poll promise, but his government went out of power even as the work had started in some locations.

DRDO Successfully Test-fires Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile System

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the second test trials of the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM).
  • The flight test, second in the series was conducted from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.
  • The test was carried out once again, against the high-performance Jet Unmanned Aerial Target called Banshee, which simulates an aircraft.
  • The flight test was conducted in the deployment configuration of the weapon system comprising of Launcher, fully Automated Command and Control System, Surveillance System and Multi-Function Radars.

Russia to Build Naval Base in Sudan

  • Russia will build a naval base on Sudan's Red Sea coast, its first in Africa, as the Kremlin seeks to expand its global military footprint and cement its burgeoning trade and defence ties with the continent. 
  • According to an order signed by President Vladimir Putin, the Russian navy has been directed to proceed with plans to construct a base for 300 personnel and space for up to four warships, including nuclear-powered vessels.
  • The base would be Russia's second naval facility outside the territory of the former Soviet Union, after Tartus in Syria. The announcement comes just over a year after Russia hosted its first geopolitical summit focused on relations with African states, to which it has ramped up sales of arms and investments in natural resource projects in recent years.

Japan and Australia Sign Defence Pact

  • Japan and Australia are to sign the "Reciprocal Access Agreement" to counter the growing influence of China in the South China Sea and in the Pacific Island Nations.
  • The defence agreement has taken six years of negotiations. This will bring the countries closer amidst militarisation in South China Sea and series of disputes over islands in East China Sea.
  • This is the first agreement of Japan to allow foreign military presence in its sovereign territory since 1960. It signed Status of Forces Agreement with the US in 1960 and with Djibouti in 2009.
  • The agreement will pave way to renew Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement.

Phase of Malabar Exercise

  • The second phase of Malabar Exercise 2020 is being conducted in the Northern Arabian Sea from November 17-20. The phase involves coordinated operations of increasing complexity between the navies of Australia, India, Japan and the United States.
  • Phase 2 of Exercise MALABAR 2020 witnesses joint operations, centred around the Vikramaditya Carrier Battle Group of the Indian Navy and Nimitz Carrier Strike Group of the US Navy. The two carriers, along with other ships, submarine and aircraft of the participating navies are engaged in high-intensity naval operations over four days.
  • These exercises include cross-deck flying operations and advanced air defence exercises by MIG 29K fighters of Vikramaditya and F-18 fighters and E2C Hawkeye from Nimitz. In addition, advanced surface and anti-submarine warfare exercises, seamanship evolutions and weapon firings will also be undertaken to further enhance interoperability and synergy between the four friendly navies.

Israeli Military Strikes Hamas Targets in Gaza after Rockets

  • The Israeli military said it struck Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip after militants fired two rockets from the Palestinian territory.
  • In a statement, the military said fighter jets, attack helicopters, and tanks hit Hamas underground infrastructure and military posts. It said two rockets were launched into Israel, with one reaching the southern Israeli city of Ashdod and the other stretching into central Israel.
  • There were no immediate reports of injuries on either side. The military said the rockets landed in open areas.
  • There was no immediate comment from Hamas officials.
