Pakistan to Form New National Intelligence Body

  • Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved the setting up of the National Intelligence Coordination Committee, a mechanism to coordinate over two dozen intelligence organisations in the country, to be headed by the ISI chief.
  • Although there have been discussions about the establishment of the coordination forum, its terms of reference and modus operandi would be decided once it formally takes shape.
  • The new body would be led by the director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), who would function as its chairman.
  • The NICC would serve as a mechanism to coordinate the over two dozen intelligence organisations in the country. National Counter Terrorism Authority would also be part of the new structure.

Successful Test of Land-attack Version of BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile

  • In a major boost for Indian armed forces, a land-attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory.
  • The test was conducted by the Indian Army which has many regiments of the missile system developed by DRDO. The strike range of BrahMos missile has now been increased to over 400 km.
  • Brahmos is a universal long-range supersonic cruise missile system that can be launched from land, sea and air. The missile has been jointly developed by DRDO, India, and NPOM, Russia. The system has been designed with two variants for anti-ship and land-attack roles.

Thales, Kanpur's MKU to Jointly Make Night Vision Devices for Armed Forces

  • Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Sidharth Nath Singh said that French multinational company Thales Group will collaborate with Kanpur-based MKU to make night vision devices in the state for armed forces.
  • The project will take place as part of UP Defence Industrial Corridor. 
  • The Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME), Export Promotion, Investment Promotion, among others, while inaugurating the corporate office of the India unit of Thales Group in Noida.
  • The minister also requested Thales Group to invest in UP to make parts of fighter jets and assured of support of the state government.
  • Thales is working alongside HAL, BHEL, L&T in India in the technology sector. This makes it clear that the opening of Thales' office in UP will be a boost to the state's aspiration for becoming ''aatmanirbhar'' (self-reliant) in the defence sector.

The US Provides Missiles, Renews Pledge to Defend Philippines

  • President Donald Trump's administration provided precision-guided missiles and other weapons to help the Philippines battle Islamic State group-aligned militants and renewed a pledge to defend its treaty ally if it comes under attack in the disputed South China Sea.
  • National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien represented Trump in a ceremony at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila, where he announced the delivery of the cache of missiles and bombs to the Philippine military. Trump pledged to provide the $18 million worth of missiles in a phone conversation with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in April.

Indian Navy to Host Singapore Bilateral Maritime Exercise in Andaman Sea

  • The Indian Navy (IN) is scheduled to host the 27th edition of India — Singapore Bilateral Maritime Exercise (SIMBEX-20) from November 23 to November 25, 2020, in the Andaman Sea.
  • The SIMBEX series of exercises between IN and Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), being conducted annually since 1994, are aimed at enhancing mutual inter-operability and imbibing best practices from each other. 
  • The 2020 edition of SIMBEX will witness participation by Indian Navy ships including destroyer Rana with integral Chetak helicopter and indigenously built corvettes Kamorta and Karmuk. In addition, IN submarine Sindhuraj and P8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft will also participate in the exercise.

Indian Army to Allow Young to Join Force

  • The Indian Army has been considering a proposal – Tour of Duty, which will allow civilians to enrol in the force as officers and in other ranks like front-line fighters for a tenure of three years. The said proposal is a part of broad reforms inculcated for the force. It is expected to be discussed by the top commanders of the Indian Army. The proposal is said to benefit the army financially.
  • The three-year stint will be different from a permanent job in the army as the latter includes benefits like pension and more. In addition to this, the enrolment will be significantly different in conscription, even though the laws are implemented to various degrees.

30th Indo-Thai CORPAT

  • The 30th Indo-Thai CORPAT between Indian Navy and Royal Thai Navy concluded on November 20, 2020.
  • INS Karmuk, HTMS Kraburi along with the Dornier maritime aircraft participated in the CORPAT. The countries have been holding CORPAT along the International Maritime Boundary Line twice a year since 2005.
  • CORPAT builds up interoperability between the participating navies. It facilitates the reduction of Illegal Unreported Unregulated fishing, maritime terrorism, drug trafficking, piracy and armed robbery. It also enhances operational synergy.
